Wonderful homemade food right in downtown

I had a refreshing chicken salad sandwich with grapes, Mandarin oranges, celery, tomatoes and lettuce on grilled sour dough toast. My husband had a cheeseburger with real cheddar and homemade breaded fries that were tender and crispy. Another great homemade meal which means alot when away from home.

Trip to Apple Basket Cafe

My husband and I ate at Ashleys Apple Basket Cafe in Macon,Mo. Service was excellent,very friendly, atmosphere was clean and hometown decor. We had their homemade battered fried tenderloin sandwiches with homemade onion rings. We rate them as excellent, my husband loves breaded tenderloin sandwiches he rates their breaded tenderloin sandwiches in the top three Missouri has to offer. A Hidden Gem in the heart of Macon!!

Gosh what a wonderful place to stop for some delicious home cooked food! We were just passing through and decided to stop for a quick bite and boy we are thankful we did! We were greeted with a very friendly smile (through her mask of course) and She seated us very quickly. Our waitress Ashley (I think) had our food out to us In less than ten minutes and made certain we had everything we needed.We had delicious crispy fried chicken that was moist and seasoned perfectly with all the fixings and we also had the beef “hot plate”-which was like going back 35 years and eating at your grandmothers kitchen table! Tender roast beef over white bread and mashed potatoes with a layer of delicious beef gravy in between each layer. Talk about yummy!! The deliciousness didn’t stop there. For desert how about a homemade apple dumpling? Oh my goodness, that crust was flakey and melted in your mouth along with those delicious apples and cinnamon sugar goodness! It was all so very good! So reasonable priced too! There is no doubt in our minds where we will eat in Macon in the future!!!!

Anniversary lunch with my wife.

Excellent food. Brenda provided excellent customer service and suggestions. My wife had a scrumptious cheeseburger and I had the very tasty hot tenderloin plate. Portions sizes were.....you will have leftovers. We also enjoyed the Irish nachos with chips.

So, so good! Everything! Everyone in our party left full & happy. The staff is very friendly & helpful. Brenda was our server & when she noticed that my husband who was feeding the baby went to the restroom she offered to help so I could still eat my hot food. Anthony was out busser & he was on top of it. If we needed something while Brenda was busy he got it for us. We would easily go back for the food, but we would stay for the staff. This is a stop you don't want to miss!

Awesome home cooking

Great food, Our waitress Brenda was tremendous. I followed her suggestion on the pork tenderloin, onion rings and finished with the cherry dumpling with ice cream. Very happy to give a 5 star rating!

Terrific food, service, and an awesome country lunch!

We visited on Friday for lunch, driving from Springfield IL to Kansas City. We read the reviews and knew we had to stop. Our server was Brenda - and she was awesome! Super friendly and quickly offered her recommendations. We ordered the special (fried catfish), the Hot Beef Sandwich, and a third great item. But first, their special onion rings with homemade ranch. They are terrific. Often places serve fried breaded rings - with no actual onion flavor. These were like panko/light fried and the onions were crunchy and so flavorful. Like another reviewer said, I could drink that ranch! The entrees were great - homemade potato chips, my roast beef was amazing and the gravy and homemade mashed potatoes were very filling. Brenda was back several times with refills on the iced tea (and used a lot of ice so it was cold!). We had a great lunch and it was very affordable.

My family will never be back.

On a regular basis I would take my family here because my 3 small kids loved it. However, they will never go back because I refuse to spend another dime here. My wife and I had just finished parent teacher conferences and decided that we would eat at the Apple Basket because we liked the food. We go in the hostess tells us to sit in a booth and she calls Bert or Brenda to come to our table. We see them but they never come to the table. The hostess goes, "have they taken your drink orde.". We say "no" and she then proceeds to call them a second time and she goes and gets our drinks. We continue to wait, another couple is seated and within 2 minutes Brenda has their drinks and is taking their order. I get up to pay for my drinks which the hostess says to not worry about. This has been the second time we've been treated poorly here. We were regular customers bringing our kids at least once a month, usual twice. No more.

Maybe the best place in town!

While attending homecoming weekend we had lunch here. A very busy place with wonderful serving staff. Ambiance is not much other than a cafe with look of clean clean clean. There are daily specials, that day was meat loaf but we chose other items. Husband had chicken fried steak, his favorite and go-to food.... he said it was one of the best. His side was coleslaw and we both ordered the side of homemade potato chips which were plentiful and delicious. I ordered the fried chicken livers and broccoli salad. All were very good and plentiful, I took 1/2 home for lunch the next day. This place is just good home cooking, a favorite amongst the locals. I'm sure you can find something you like on their menu if you don't want the daily special. The pies looked amazing, but my hips and his gut stay away from desserts.

A hidden gem

My husband and I had a rare moment without the kiddos so we decided to try a new place. Based on these reviews we drove to Macon and we were not disappointed! Friendly service, clean area, and excellent food! Our appetizer was fried pickles with their homemade ranch (husband is hard to please with ranch and this was DEFINITELY homemade and so yummy!)I had the pork chop with homemade pineapple sauce on top and a side of the baked apples. (Oh the memories of my grandma's baked apples!) VERY reasonable prices and you get a LOT! Husband had the wings, fries and homemade chips with the homemade ranch! And for dessert (yes we had dessert even though we didn't finish all of our dinner!) I had the coconut pie and hubby had the chocolate pudding pie! I'm beyond stuffed but so thrilled! This is definitely a hometown place with couples and groups wandering in and being greeted love that atmosphere!

Great Food and Great Service

As always we received an Amazing Meal with fast friendly service. Apple basket has a wide range menu to choose from along with daily specials and delicious dessert Options. The staff are always very friendly and accommodating. Apple Basket is definitely a top choice to eat at when we are visiting Macon. Highly recommended!

Fantastic Small Town Restaurant

Back in 2019, FEAST magazine did a story praising this small town restaurant. The atmosphere is simple, while the taste of the food is incredible--no wonder the magazine sent a staff writer to Macon. There was a large portion of home-made onion rings as an appetizer. Every last bite of the jumbo tenderloin was delicious. Sadly, I couldn't try their biscuit bread pudding; it was sold out! However, the homemade pies were a great way to end lunch. The service was wonderful, attentive, and seeming to actually care about why we were in town. If traveling through Macon around lunch time, skip the fast food joints that are on the main road, and instead, go to the downtown area and enjoy some great food and hospitality!

YUmMY!

Our family (my husband, myself and our three boys 8,11,14) just drove through Theron of Macon on our way to another location. We had heard about this restaurant from a google search… read some reviews and thought we should stop there for our lunch break. It did not disappoint! Food choices for everyone, delicious tasting, giant home cooked portions, and full tummies. Brenda was our server and treated our boys like her own grandkids.

Highly recommend Ashley's Apple Basket!

I have never had a bad meal here! Every dish is to die for - I dream about their cobb salad and onion rings. Today, I took my husband for the first time. Brenda was our server and we had excellent service. My husband had the hot tenderloin and he raved about it, especially the brown gravy. If you're passing through or in Macon regularly, you've got to try this hidden gem! Five stars for sure.
