As a college student, I visit Take Root quite frequently for homework and coffee sessions. The environment is perfect for getting ahead on your to-do list. This is also an exceptional location to have dinner or lunch. My favorites on the menu include the ramen...and spicy lentil bowls (highly recommend)!! By far one of my favorite places in Kirksville :)More

Six of us each chose different lunch options, no one was disappointed. Super friendly staff, great presentation, food was fantastic, partial volunteer employees, restaurant model is great! My daughter and her friends have fun volunteering there. Suggested prices are very reasonable, there is NO pressure...to pay more, but considering there is no tipping, it is easy to pay more than suggested. If you are looking for typical/ordinary food, this might not be the best place for you.More

I went with my college student. She had the falafel. I had the gnocchi. Both were excellent! Made from scratch with real, fresh ingredients. The "suggested donation" instead of a price at first kind of threw me at first, but I ended up paying more...than they asked; it was worth every penny. Look, I'm a regular guy. I like a good cheeseburger and fries, or a steak, or a gyro, or a Chicago dog. This is not the place for that. But for fresh, high quality, well-prepared food? There's not a place in Kirksville or 50 miles around there's not a place that can beat it.More

I ate here when visiting my son at Truman State University. A friend had recommended it, and we were curious to see what a pay-what-you-want restaurant would be like. The menu does have prices that are suggested donations. The prices are reasonable, and what you...would expect to pay at a similar restaurant/cafe. There is a self-serve water station with cold water in glass urns; the water is infused with cucumbers or fruit; it was tasty and refreshing. I ordered the falafel plate and my son ordered the miso ramen. There are plenty of vegetarian options, but there are meat options too. The falafel plate was very good, and the miso ramen was good, but not great, according to my son. The staff was very friendly, and the atmosphere was very welcoming. There are a couple couches and a play area with toys for young children. We will definitely be back.More

Wow! This place is amazing! Friendly folks in the restaurant, not just the employees but the guests also! As an out of town guest, I was impressed with the friendliness of the people. The atmosphere of the dining area is very comfortable and welcoming. The...woodwork appears historical which I find impressive that it has been preserved and incorporated into the concept. The concept for this restaurant is unique in my opinion. After placing an order, the cashier tells you the price but will say “the suggested donation is....” and tell you the price. It was explained to me that they still serve people who may not be able to afford to pay the full price for a meal. Impressive!! I had the falafel sandwich. It was wonderful! For desert, I had the chocolate vegan ice cream. I was told that it was made from avocado. I know some people probably just turned their noses up or made a yucky face. But do not knock it without trying it. It was great! If you’re traveling through Missouri, this establishment is worth the stop!More

While touring Truman University, our guide told us about Take Root. I love the pay what you want concept. They suggest a donation & then you can pay more, less or anywhere in between. Lots of vegetarian options. We had a veggie bowl & Ramen...bowl. Both were good. The French press coffee was fantastic & you must have the pistachio cake. We will definitely dine here again!More

I have been to this cafe several times, and each visit exceeds my expectations. If you are into clean eating, vegan, vegetarian or simply delicious, check this place out. They have a good selection of coffee, tea, and other natural beverages. The desserts are amazing....The establishment is a pay as you can model and many students from the surrounding universities volunteer for free. Highly recommend!!More

A favorite place to meet friends and eat healthy, tasty food! This cafe has really taken root in this community! You'll be given a suggested price for your meal. If you can pay more, it goes towards free meal tokens for those who can't afford...to eat out. Prices are very reasonable, and the cooking is great! Good coffee too. Order at the counter, and food is delivered to your table.More

If you want an alternative to steak, this is the place to go. This restaurant has food that seems out of place in this part of the country. Unique, and tasty entrees that would keep me coming back if I lived there.

The food was so good! The falafel sandwich was so delicious I googled recipes to try to recreate. The Cuban sandwich was to die for and the lentil bowl—I could eat every day! I bought an extra Cuban and falafel sandwich to take for my...lunch at work the next couple of days. We had chocolate peanut butter cake for dessert—another winner! I like the concept of paying what you can. We were there to bring our daughter to Truman. We’ll be back.More

Chef quality locally-sourced food. Unique atmosphere full of carved wood. You "pay what you can," meaning no one is turned away. Those with more means simply pay a standard price plus opt to donate on top, to help feed others. Great food, and a direct...way to help someone less fortunate. This restaurant fills your stomach and your heart!More

Eaten all over Kirksville. When I was there they had a chicken dish in a hot skillet on the menu that was well seasoned and very tasty. It was, simply put, the best thing I’ve eaten in Kirksville. Kirksville is not an oasis of great...dining. The concept of ‘pay what you care to’ is more than a little peculiar. Especially for Kirksville. I wish them luck. It’s very very clean. The service was fast. The food was good. It’s a good place to eat and no one should not go there just because of the funky concept.More

The food here was delicious and the employees were really great too. I like how if you spend over a certain amount someone in need can get a free meal. This is an amazing place 10/10 would visit again.

We ate at this restaurant because their mission is fighting hunger. They have a pay-what-you-can philosophy. We were traveling through the area and through it would be a good thing to contribute to. We were expecting a small storefront cafe. It was a full-scale, beautiful...restaurant with great atmosphere. You order at the counter, and the servers bring the food to your table. There is seating at booths and fancy picnic tables. The lighting and decor was great. I ordered a half salad, and it was served on really pretty china. My husband ordered a chicken enchilada, and it was served right out of the oven in a little frying pan. Both had great presentation and taste. We also had a slice of coffee cake. We were super impressed with the food, service and atmosphere. We paid more than the suggested donation, and felt good about the experience.More
