This place is exceptional. The food is always very tasty and consistent. This is my go to place when I want something different, and they never fail to please. Thank you and please keep up the great work1

Their jerk chicken is delicious, has a classic KC BBQ style to it too. Being from New Orleans, their red beans and rice were the only thing that just didn’t do it for me. They were a little dry. Their meat pies are amazing!!!!

It is nice to find new restaurants I have not been to, especially specialty restaurants you can't find everywhere. There is parking on the side, and the restaurant is very small. You order at the counter, I went overboard. For two people we had fried plantains, jerk chicken wings, order of the jerk chicken and fish. The portions are large, but not a fan of the to-go boxes you get, even when dining in, it is wasteful. The jerk chicken was great, I really liked the flavor, surprisingly the cabbage was very good but the rice and beans were dry. My girlfriend had the fish and said it was just ok, it did not look that great. I found everything else to be flavorful and the spices were tasty! Good place to come to if you are in the mood for something new.

I ate here last year during the Soul Food tour and it was amazing! The jerk chicken was sooo good! It was tender and so well seasoned. I'm not even a big fan of spices and I loved it! The festival (it's like cornbread, but better) was delicious! The menu had all kinds of tasty looking items. It's a little hidden away restaurant but so worth it!

I am one of the foremost Americas' best critics when it comes to non American foods. I love Island Spice it is the bomb and well hidden on 39th Street corner of Main. It's tucked in a old bank drive thru and its cute! well polished and tasteful. First question I ask in a ethnic restraunt is "where are you from?" Nobody can bring the soul of ethnic food like first generation folk! After looking at the menu I knew it was going to be "fire." I ordered Curried Shrimp and my date asked for a Fish Basket. They had home made Ginger Beer and... wait for it... Sorrel. My meal came with red beans and rice smothered in curry sauce with veggies (cabbage mixed with carrots, etc.) "delicious" is all I heard as I held my head down to my plate filling my face with warm aromas of authentic Jamaican soul food and a pile of Shrimp. All I can say is this is now on my "need to" eat places with Jerk Chicken and Brown Stew Chicken lunch specials. Yum yum!

Our family wanted Jamaican food and this was a great restaurant. The jerk chicken was very spicy, just the way I like it and the curry goat was seasoned nicely. I would visit again when we're in the area. I really wanted to try the red pea soup which is my favorite soups but it was not available, maybe next time.

My husband is Jamaican, and there really aren't any authentic Jamaican restaurants in Kansas City. On top of that, there is an authentic Jamaican restaurant in San Diego, CA called Island Spice that we totally love, so we decided to give the Kansas City Island Spice a try. What a huge mistake!!! The place was filthy, the brown stew and the jerk tasted exactly the same, and the oxtails were greasy beyond greasy. We called our order in, but it wasn't ready when we got there and still had to wait 30 min or so while the staff yelled at each other and got it ready. Once we got the food home, we only ate a little before we both started having stomach trouble. Something was definitely bad, so we ended up just throwing the food away. What a waste of money, and a cruel, cruel trick to call what they served at this place Jamaican food.

Small in space, no public restroom/washroom, no waiter, no paper towel/napkin on the table, no alcohol and no fancy schmancy utensils... This list of 'disappointment' suddenly went away as soon as I put the food in my mouth. Who cares about all those? This place was mainly for take outs. Not a dine-in eatery. So you go in, study the menu on the board, walk up to the window and give them your order. Ordering your drinks also done at this window. No fountain drinks or alcohol. They have a refrigerator with bottled drinks. Our Tings (Jamaican soda) were served warm, not sure if they were just put in the fridge recently or the fridge is not working properly. However, when we asked for glasses of ice, they were able to do so. It was about 90 degrees weather that day, so icy cold beverages were much needed. The waiting time for the food was not so bad. It was slow compared to the amazingly fast Chinese restaurant, but I rather have it this way since they prep the food fresh. In all honesty, compared to other Jamaican restaurants, the waiting time for this one was not so bad. Food came (they will call it out), so you go to the window, grab the tray with the styrofoam box plus a couple of napkins and plastic cutlery on the tray. Yes, styrofoam and plastic cutlery... remember, you're here for the FOOD. We ordered Jerk Chicken, Oxtail Stew, and Brown Chicken. They came with brown rice and beans, and cooked cabbage with carrots. My Brown Chicken was DELICIOUS! My son's Oxtail Stew was MOUTH WATERING. My daughter and husband ordered the Jerk Chicken. We've been to Jamaica a couple of times, spending most of our time in Port Antonio (Jerk Capital of the World) and also tried Jamaican food here and there in the US. So we know what to expect. They both said the Jerk Chicken was a little bit 'off', but the extra spicy sauce they gave you will take care of it. Oh, and try the beef patties! They're in the rack by the window. Will make a good appetizer. Did I tell you it's CHEAP to eat here? My Brown Chicken box was only $5.99! But again, remember... You. Are. Here. For. The. Food! Hope you'd enjoy this place as much as we did.

KC locals must stop by this hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Experience the ethnic foods: curried goat, jerk chicken, Escovich red snappers, cow foot soup, fish soup, ginger beer, ox tail, beef patties, rice & beans...you'll find something you'd like to try and come back for. The wait is terrible sometimes. It helps to call in and order ahead of time. The food warms your soul. My favorites are the curried goat, rice&beans and beef patties, but you'll definitely need to give all a try and find your own favorites!

Delicious jerk chicken and the goat curry reminded me of my travels through Asia. This is a must-try! I'd go back just for the cabbage.

I asked my husband to pick up take out after work because I had heard great things about this place. The three of us really liked the food - we shared three dishes - braised beef, jerk chicken, curried goat. The braised beef was hands-down the best to me - so very tasty. Great sauce. My husband liked the goat best and it was good. The jerk chicken was ok - a little dry. The cabbage that is served with all of the dishes is amazingly tasty - we all loved it. And they had this little fritter like thing - that was wonderful. I used don't like fried dough items, but this was really good. All in all I wound eat here again. Now - my husband laughed about the experience of picking up the food. He said there were only a couple of people in the place - but that it took a very long time to get the order. He said everyone was very pleasant - but maybe too laid back for some. If you are in a rush - pick another day to go. But we thought the wait was worth it.
