Took my mom for Mother’s Day. (Along with hubs and two kids) I’m sad that one of my all time faves has gone down hill. First off my ribeye was full of gristle. I bet I only ate half of the piece. I loved the...potato. The salad wasn’t very cold. Loved the homemade French dressing. I like the beets. Our waitress was sour. Not nice or friendly. And the owner didn’t even smile at my mom and looked at her twice. Strange. I felt like we were a burden when asked for an extra plate. And asked her to repeat dessert options. I used to get their white cake. I did the apple cobble. It wasn’t done. Crust doughy. Sad. I loved it last time (5 years ago)! The kids fries tasted burned. Looked worse than burned. My mom liked her fried livers. But, her mashed potatoes and gravy were luke warm. For the price, it’s sad we didn’t get better meals.More

I took my father to this steakhouse for a milestone birthday of his. I figured if we were in KC, we'd get an authentic KC steak. He really enjoyed his steak; he couldn't finish it and had to take it back to the house. He...also really enjoyed the pickled beet appetizer and the twice baked potato. I had the prime steakburger and cottage fries. The cottage fries that were too think to be a potato chip, but thing enough to be crispy but soft, were the best. The burger is huge. This place isn't cheap, but the burger was a decent bargain and the steak was worth the price.More

If you want linen tablecloths, this not your place! Instead, if you want an excellent steak at a reasonable price, please read further. Jess and Jim's is a nostalgic throw-back to 50 years ago, when food and service were alive and well. We were in...KC for a trade show. We took 47 customers and friends out to dinner. The entire evening was an absolute home run. From the greeting at the door to the sincere "thank you" as we left, The VanNoy family runs a great place. Great food, friendly service makes you want come back. I even received a follow-up to make sure that everything was as promised. Forty-six "thank yous" for the evening says it all. Jess and Jim's we will be back. The old white-haired guy from the Air CapMore

I’d been meaning to try this well-known place for a long time. Dining there was a bit like going back in time to the 1970s. My meal was delicious and enjoyable. We started with an appetizer platter. Excellent onion rings, chicken drumettes, and mac-and-cheese bites....The house salad was crisp and had a great variety of fresh ingredients beyond lettuce. Homemade dressings were classic and fantastic - so much better than bottled stuff. My ribeye steak was perfectly grilled, tender, and had just a hint of the house seasoning. The loaded baked potato was fluffy and generously topped. Located on the outskirts of town in quaint Martin City, I will definitely return for a classic meal at a reasonable price. I will for sure give the chicken fried steak a go on my next visit.More

Had 2 food objectives while planning our trip to KC....BBQ and steak. It was easy to find the right BBQ, but had a hard time finding a steakhouse that was focused on the food vs trying to make it pretty/fancy. Eventually I expanded my search...and found Jess & Jim's, which was nearly 25 minutes from our hotel. Both my wife and Uber driver seemed surprised we were going so far out of the city for dinner, but if I'm coming halfway across the country, I might as well travel an extra 20 minutes for the right place. And the right place this was. Everything was on point. The salad was generously sized and to our surprise, they had french dressing, which is exceedingly rare to find. We both had a filet and loaded potato. Even the loaded potato was worth raving about. It was large and plenty of butter was mixed in, so the potato was actually soft, making it easy to mix in the cheese and sour cream. On to the steak - cooked and seasoned perfectly- my wife always insists on using A1, but even she agreed it wasn't necessary. If this wasn't enough, it was wrapped in bacon, which I cut to get a little piece with each bite of steak. Perfection. As we left, I noticed a sign that had them listed on a Yahoo list of top ten steakhouses in the world several years back. No arguments here.More

J&J's was a recommendation so on a visit to KC, selected this place over several others I wish I had considered more thoroughly. I wanted to like it more and I gave it a chance. I think a few factors just didn't go my way....I came with higher expectations so I was let down by that. Ambiance: Older (which I thought would be a plus - like going to an iconic place) but it just seemed a bit worn. The place was mostly empty at 6pm on a Sunday (red flag) and we were seated in the far back corner by the entrance to the kitchen where the noise could be heard; unnecessary since there were so many open tables. There was 70's-80's pop-rock blasting way too loudly over the speakers which was a big distraction from a diner atmosphere; I really did not like that and it put me off from the start as did a bottle of ketchup on the rather marred uncovered table. A tablecloth would have improved the experience. Staff was friendly but not passionate about the place; server was fairly new and didn't quite know the menu perhaps as well as she should. The food was ok and that was too bad - could have redeemed the ambiance with great food but no - sorry. Started with the spicy cauliflower and it lacked finesse; just cauli dipped in too thick a batter served with ranch in a plastic cup. C'mon guys, Chili's does better than that! Daughter had the French dip which was very good (probably the best main course of the three of us). The Mrs. had the chicken fried steak which I thought was marginal at best (all due respect). I ordered the 14oz KC Strip (when in Rome and all...) It was good but definitely not great and I got through about 2/3 of it. (I did slice it up the next day and gave it a 1-min pan fry... honestly it was better the second day). I'm glad I ordered the mushrooms as the steak needed it; they were good. I went with the prime soup starter (because the dinner salad sounded pretty blah at the hearing of the description) and it was more of a pot roast than prime, again, goodish but not great. the baked potato was great though; loved it. I couldn't help but wonder if this was once the go-to place in it's 'day', but clearly if that is true, it has lost it's way. I would be particularly disappointed if I were there for a special occasion; not the place for that. It's a casual dining experience and not fine dining for sure. I think maybe lunch would be good. The value/experience relationship didn't quite measure up. The steak with mushrooms topped $60 and I expected more for that. $125 for dinner for three and I was the only steak at the table. I hate writing bad reviews so I'm sad to do that... but I do it out of love, truly! J&J's, you guys have potential if you step it up a bit. I believe in you and I'll come back some day for lunch but it won't be my first choice for a diner steak.More

A month ago I drove hard to get here before closing time only to find out they shut down the kitchen early due to a slow night. I decided to try it again this week. Just a really poor ribeye. Dry and overcooked. Side salad...was fine, but the steak was downright poor. Years ago this place was great. Not anymoreMore

Pretty hit or miss on the steaks for our large group. Some ribeye good and some appeared to be strip-no fat and no taste. Appetizers weee the best-especially the fried items. Seemed rather overpriced for the quality of beef and handling of the cooking. Nice...interior and atmosphere once but nothing compelling to return. Lobster was rubbery according to one of us.More

On my final evening in town for work (Thursday March 16), I met up with an old friend who took me here based on his recommendation. I loved the old style restaurants, especially if they’re steakhouses. I ordered the 5 ounce filet mignon and I...think he got the ribeye with the livers and gizzards appetizer. I should’ve tried one of his gizzards because I’ve never had one before. Anyway, I loved my steak. So much that it was the best meal of my time here. Before I forget, the service was great throughout our time too.More

I really liked J&J as a lunch place. The lights are dim and the noise level is low. My chicken fried steak was excellent. More steak than coating, so I liked that. Debbie's French dip was both delicious and enormous. Half of it came home....It's not a pretentious place, so don't go expecting white linen tablecloths. But the food is good and there's a lot of it. We'll go back every now and then.More

We went to Jess and Jim’s steakhouse for our anniversary. We had been there several times before. It will be our last time eating there. Service was ok and we were seat promptly with a reservation. The fresh beets are a winner with my wife....She had the porterhouse medium with shrimp scampi on the side. The steak was of poor quality and not cooked correctly. The edges were well done and it had a cold red center. The shrimp tasted like rubber dipped in garlic. Even with a sharp steak knife she spent most of her time cutting all of the gristle out of her steak. She said the salad was good. I had the prime beef soup. Not bad but tasted like pot roast, not very prime. My steak was also filled with gristle and fat and poorly cooked. Well done to medium rare. The highlight of my meal was the baked potato. Pretty sad for what was a great steakhouse. Save you money and go to Texas Roadhouse you will get a better meal for a lot less money. We will not be going backMore

Went with a large group. Don't know how the others' steaks were, but my wife's and mine were tasteless and a bit tough. (Medium and medium rare) Service was good as was salad and potato. For a place that is known for steak, I can...say the chicken fingers might have been a better option. Outback is better quality and considerably better priced.More
