Firstly, I LOVE German cuisine and have had the pleasure of traveling to many destinations where I found top notch restaurants but until now had not been able to do so in my hometown of Kansas City. My daughter actually had Affare recommended to her...by a friend and she took me there for Father’s Day. It is fairly small so reservations are very necessary but entirely worth it. I chose the Wildschweinkotelett (Wild Boar Chops) with very freshly made spatzle and cabbage. The presentation was superb but paled in comparison to the taste. Best “pork chop” of my life, unquestionably. My daughter chose the Jagerschnitzel with butter spatzle and while she didn’t share much, she did share a little and it was the lightest most tender Jagerschnitzel I’ve had in all my travels. THEN…. Dessert. She had the Black Forest Cake and I opted for the Apple Streudel. Both were AMAZING and both came with chantilly cream which was so good, my daughter wanted a bowl by itself. Bottom line: If you’re in Kansas City and can’t make up your mind about dinner, get a reservation at Affare!!!More

No idea why this place is highly rated. The only flavor is salt. Pehking duck tasted like a hot dog. Venison steak had NO flavor. Scraped the 'herb crust' off just to eat the meat. Potato side was cold. Veggies tasted as if they were...frozen. Seriously, my mouth is raw from the amount of sodium in the food. Aioli in the seafood app tasted like miracle whip (gross). Beer was good. $160 wastedMore

Completely changed my concept of German cuisine (sorry grandmother Mathilda). Intriguing menu, Thoughtful presentation, Considerate service. 6 of our family visited and all settled on the tasing menu, 4 with wine pairing and one with beer pairing. All enjoyed the meal and savored each bite...from the tomato couscous shrimp salad , the two wonderful fish courses with excellent sauce to the very light and tasty dessert. We can’t wait to return.More

Our family had a wonderful time at this restaurant! It was our first time and we were celebrating our daughter’s birthday. We were warmly greeted and seated in a very elegant area near the bar. The hostess hung up all of our coats and the...waitress surprised all of us with a champagne toast for our daughter!! It was suggested to order the bratwurst entree as an appetizer to share…. It was awesome! We had great dinners including duck, sauerbraten, lemon pepper risotto with shrimp… all excellent!! They also had a large beer, wine, and cocktail selection. We will be back!!!More

Start with a compliment. The prices are VERY reasonable. Two-thirds what you would expect to pay and less than half of the grotesquely overpriced fine dining places around town. Now the rest. I love German food. So I really, really wanted to like this place....But nope, every part of the dining experience was not quite up to par. Let's start with the atmosphere. If it were the 90's, Affare would be cutting edge. Exposed everything (brick, cinder block, hvac ductwork, etc.). Giant paintings hanging from the walls. Naugahyde seating. Very chic 30 years ago. Now it just looks like they couldn't be bothered to invest in fixing the place up a little. The service was slow with a capital S. We went on New Year's Eve. But that was no excuse for them, because there were empty tables from 7:30 on. When the waitress dropped off our menus she said, "I'll give you plenty of time to look." Well, she wasn't kidding. Every single time she came to our table we had been waiting for her (no pun intended) to get to us for several minutes. Getting our drinks, taking our orders, running food, handling the check. Slow getting to us every time. And the other people who have complimented the food so very highly must have been eating different dishes than we ordered. We started with the tartare. The waitress said that mayonnaise was used as the binder. I told her I wasn't fond of mayonnaise, but she assured me it was not the primary flavor of the dish. But the truth is, it's like eating Hellman's out of the jar. There's so much of it the beef isn't even red. It's white. My brats were good. Three different types. Huge sausages. The sides were so-so, but it was good for the price. Deb's jager schnitzel was a let down. Too tough and too chewy even for this cheaper cut of meat. She left most of it there. So I don't know what to tell you. We obviously had a different experience than most of the reviewers. But I personally can't recommend it.More

First, I will say that our server was great. Very friendly. Very helpful. Service was definitely spot on. The problem is the food. It is mediocre at best. It's just not that good. We tried several different items and all were just okay. For a...nice and higher end restaurant, I anticipated having much better food and this just fell short. Sadly, we probably won't go back.More

Can't believe we have lived in Crossroads for several years, and just now getting to know and love this place! They totally live up to and exceed everything written on their website. Fresh and whole foods are juxtaposed with nouveau German. AND both my totally...carnivore husband and my pescatairian requirements are beautifully met here! Who knew German cuisine could be so lovely! We love their Salad Platter (enough to be a meal or generously shared by 2 as an appetizer and their pretzels (YUMMM!) Wine choices are great, with help of wife/owner/sommelier extraordinaire, Kat! I tried their scallops, shrimp, lemon risotto tonight, and it was incredible - and I can't begin to describe the exponential enjoyment the very fresh egg (perfectly cooked) brought to this dish - I was blown away! Curb appeal of this place is very unassuming, don't let that fool you-- step inside to the magnificant culinary adventure. We went twice the first week we discovered this lovely, locally owned gem. DO NOT MISS THIS!More

Finally we have found an excellent modern German restaurant in the US!!! After many unfortunate fake German chicken dance dining experiences I was still not yet ready to give up my search for a nice and delicious modern German dining experience. I am born and...raised German and I can guarantee that what most Americans consider a „German food experience“ is as fake as Disneyland. However Affäre is the real deal!!!! We have traveled through 19 states in the past 3 months and I have searched for German restaurants and bakeries along the way. What I found was poor imitations of Oktoberfest style Brauhauses with German music from the 60‘s and a menu of dry pork schnitzel and sausages. Many fellow US based Germans also complain about this misconception of our food culture. We were in Southern Kentucky when I discovered Affäre in Kansas City. Yes, it was 450 miles away, but I made a reservation and told my husband he had 2 days to get us there 😁. Let me tell you, it was worth every mile we drove to get here! We were welcomed by the owner Katrin and seated in the beautiful courtyard. We had a delicious Aperitif while pondering what to eat. It all sounded delicious. I had to go with the Maultaschen followed by the Kalbsgeschnetzeltes mit Spätzle, the hubby decided to get the Pilzterrine followed by the seafood risotto. Katrin, a Sommelier, helped us find the perfect bottle of wine that went with both our meals! For desert we had a wine poached pear with Pumpernickel Eis and a Käsesahnetörtchen mit Eis and fruit. The food was seasonal, fresh and absolutely delicious!! The service was also outstanding. I am sure Affäre would be a celebrated fine dining destination in Germany! This is the style German food I grew up with, seasonal and fresh, with a hint of international flavors. Unfortunately non German‘s don’t seem to realize that German food is so much more than just Schnitzel and sausages… (to clarify I love both but it’s what I cook at Home…) My husband voted this top 2 meals we ever had at a restaurant. Where usually only one or two menu items sound appealing at other restaurants, we both would have happily eaten anything on this menu. We will be back for more!More

I'd rate the food a 4. The jager sauce was tomato-based, which isn't authentic German cuisine. I lived in Germany for two-and-a-half years and was never served a tomato-based jager schnitzel sauce. Having said that, the food was good. We ate there at 9 pm,...and although we barely made their last seating, they welcomed us courteously. The table service itself was good. However, I give the service a 1 because of the political rant by the server. A customer should never be subjected to an employee's political opinions. After a long drive we were looking forward to a relaxing experience and having politics shoved in our faces wasn't relaxing.More

This restaurant is consistently excellent. In the “before times”, my family and I enjoyed the spare but chic dining room and the absolutely wonderful food. Now during the pandemic, we have taken to ordering for curbside pick up from Affäre. Katrin and Martin still deliver!...Recently, we have enjoyed the scallops with duck liver, the duck, the venison and various schnitzels. Portions are always good and the quality is terrific with the delicious Affäre flair. It is our go to splurge restaurant. Katrin’s wine recommendations are always excellent as well, and I always discover new and interesting wines that I would not have tried otherwise.More
