I was complaining recently that there was no West African food in Kansas City, and someone mentioned Fannie's to me. I finally got to go there yesterday, and I was very pleasantly surprised ... The restaurant is clean and tidy, and the owners are structuring...people to stay spaced out for COVID-19 safety. Now, West African cuisine is one of those hidden gems of the world food world. It has vibrant tastes, lots of novel agreements, and nice surprises. I ordered one of my favorites from West African trips ... banku, which is made from fermented cassava. The banku lunch special was served with a 14-inch mackerel (perfectly fried!), a bowl of pepper sauce (very tasty), a pile of fresh vegetables, and the banku meal. Oh yes, and some fried plantains as well. Needless to say, I ended up quite full, but full of great tastes... The ginger drink was nicely prepared also, and the service was pleasant and prompt. In sum, this place is a hidden gem, and I will go back a bunch of times...More
