Cincinnati has its Skyline Chili & Red Star chili. Way before them, on the other side of the Midwest is Fred&Reds. Joplin almost lost it in the 80’s, but it's baaaccckkk!. Friendly folks. Delicious unique foods. It's like going back in time. Thank the good...Lord the tornado missed it! Affordable prices. Worth the drive to get to...More

This place has been in Joplin, Mo since 1923. It was called Grover’s back then. Moved to it’s current location in 1943 at 1719 Main St. Their specialty is Spaghetti Red (chili over spaghetti). It’s simply “awesome”. A very unique taste. Their own family recipe...on the chili. Saltines, onions, pickles, grate parmesan cheese and cider vinegar on the side. Gotta add that their burgers, fries and the tamales are fantastic as well.More

I drive by this almost everyday and finally decided to give it a shot. I ordered the spaghetti red and was not impressed. A container with spaghetti in it with a little bit of dry chili that looked like canned dog food. Not much flavor...at all. May give it another shot but nothing with chili!!More

I would presume this is a once a year “guilty pleasure”??? It is thick spaghetti noodles covered in a greasy ground beef “sauce”, more beef than sauce. I was taken here as an out of towner... not a place that I would ever showcase. But...I am more a fan of real food than whatever you might call this concoction. Would never return nor ever think to myself, I’d like to make this at home.More

We have been eating spaghetti red here for 30 years...same recipe even tho owners changed. Old style horseshoe counter holds about 30 people so dont expect to reserve a table. Absolutely love the friendly wait staff, the atmosphere and most especially the chili and spaghetti...red... happy from Kansas..we eat here every single time we visit Joplin. ❤More

Great food and environment with the music. The staff are friendly as ever singing to the songs, joking and their joyous laughter fill the restraunt and they must love their jobs! The toilet in the men's room was broken and won't flush. I am recommending...you bring your family here.More

My second time to visit this place. First time with new owners. Same friendly staff. Same menu. I have several friends that love to eat there. Took my wife and I wasn’t certain I was going to get her back to Arkansas. Way to greasy,...and chili on spaghetti come on folks??? Also ordered tamales??? Recon I’m just to southern to call masa dough tamales. Now I know a lot of folks like this place but not this fat boy and his bride. Again clean food ok but not the way it’s put together Hamburgers looked good, at 1:15 on sat afternoon crowded.More

I'm not sure why some people have problems with this place, but I think it's pretty dang good. I stuck with something simple and basic called a chili burger. No complaints here at all. They may have their own recipe for chili, but icing is...pretty dang tasty. This place is worthy of any roadtrippers or roadie's time and money. Spaghetti red, tamale spread, or the classic chili burger... they have that, and more. Waitresses are pretty friendly, and will take time to talk with you, as long as they're not busy. Overall decent place, I highly recommend it.More

I was told by locals to try this and it was surprisingly good! Try the half and half! It was great! Service was fast and friendly. I never felt uncomfortable the whole time I was there. The diner is small but I never had to...wait and was treated great.More

Fred and Red's is known for chili (no beans), tamales and spaghetti red, which is spaghetti topped with the chili. The chili is offered with a small plate of onion slices and dill pickle slices. You sit at a U-shaped counter on built-in bar stools....It looks like I imagine it did when built in 1943, but it does have a modern debit/credit card machine, so no worries. I had a chili cheeseburger. My husband had the tamales. Our son had a plain hot dog. We split an order of fries, which turned out to be skinny crinkle fries. Service and speed were great.More
