About
Excellent traditional Portuguese food inside a medieval walled city. Lovely food and the owner is a very charming lady called Isabel. Fantastic view as it looks out onto the largest man made lake in Europe. Definitely worth a visit!

This was a highlight of my trip to the area. The views are extraordinary as is the food.
They did not have menus, only a small staff that tells you what will be offered for the evening. If I am not mistaken, the food is created by one lone woman who works magic in her kitchen. The pork. WOW. The fish. WOW again. This was a delight. Informal, great wine, and a lot of fun. Not to be missed.

About eight years later, we returned to this restaurant, run by D. Isabel.
Maintains the quality we are used to and the typical atmosphere of a family kitchen. Like we were in Grandma's house...
We are warmly greeted at the entrance with your smile, good disposition and relaxation, pointed by the delicious local accent.
At the table, the dishes of the day are announced (because D. Isabel only serves fresh food).
It was Sunday and I had grain cooked. Which we ask, of course.
And also, its famous black-colored cheeks (which wiped out in the mouth), steamed in red wine, accompanied by Arabic rice.
One dose included six cheeks...
The grain boiled, very well served, still today leaves me missing.
The wine is chosen at the entrance by the customers - there are two options, at €20 and €25, respectively -, who brought the desired bottle and which was open in front of them.
I didn't see anyone being served with bottles of wine previously opened...
The entries had a beautiful look (I was indecisive in the face of the sausage salad with fresh cheese, but wanted to have appetite for the dessert and we ended up ordering a curated sheep cheese, wonderful. And the wonderful Alentejo bread...)
For dessert, there were several options available in the showroom, we chose the orange pie and the rala bread...
Sorry our stomachs can't stand anymore.
A family atmosphere, which stands out from the usual restaurants.
For our part, we only hope that spirit will continue.
That's what we're looking for in the deep Alentejo.
Prices appropriate to quality and quantities served.
And also include the sympathy, relaxation and vivacity of D. Isabel.
Due to the small dimensions (and the insistence on serving newly made food), it is essential to make a reservation.
Well, D. Isabel and her helpful collaborator.

We went here for dinner. The starters were delivered in the table immediately. Each person can accept them or reject them as they please. He had the salad (fresh cheese and watercress - delicious), cheese and chourizo. Then we went for COD migas and pork - very tasty. Migas were just delicious. The view is beautiful. And the service is quick and good. Highly recommended

Location: beautiful setting with views of Monsaraz castle.
Food: very limited number of dishes. You are introduced to the four choices of dishes (2 fish and 2 pork meat) by the owner of the restaurant who randomly comes to your table regardless of your order of arrival. There is no vegetarian option. There is no physical menu.
Food quality and portion size: two of the dishes chosen (migas de bacalhau and carne de porco à Alentejana) were too greasy and a bit tasteless. The portion was average. The Bochechas de Porco were tasty and well cooked but the size of the portion was far too large - enough for 3 people to eat.
Service - only one lady serving the whole restaurant meant that the service was very slow. To get the waiter’s attention one had to shout.
Price: there is no menu and therefore there are no prices. The bill arrives showing whatever price for each dish. We found it expensive for the quality of the food.
General notes: we had booked a table weeks in advance and were looking forward to this meal as a highlight of our trip to Monsaraz but we’re greeted by a very rude lady (supposedly the owner of the restaurant) who not only shouted at us, made us move table after we were seated for 15 minutes following her unclear shouted instructions on where to seat and, to add insult to injury, decided one person from our party should not have a chance to select their own food “as the portion already ordered are more than enough.”
This was the most unpleasant experience we’ve ever experienced! A place never to return mostly on account of the rudeness of the owner.

A real scam! We were outside on the terrace while it was cold. A group of 24 tourists was there. We were warned but...not of the menu imposed orally without offering a menu or announcing a price (choice between migas de bacalhau or bochachas de porco with rice) by a surly waitress. No half liter of wine. Brought open bottle. As a starter, 4 half thin slices of cream cheese on watercress for two. A dessert for two and 62 Euros per bill! The only positive points: the bochachas dish was good and the chef kindly listened to my disappointment but made no move to make amends!

Very overrated. The owner is a character and is amusing if you like being told what you are having for dinner with no choices. The offerings were pork cheeks which were very tough and needed to be cut with a knife in an uninteresting broth with little flavor. This was accompanied by a white rice with raisins, nuts and cilantro which was ok but not special. The baccala was a mush of some kind with fish so salty it was almost inedible.
I know what Alentej food should be and have been to cooking schools in the region. The day before we had eaten in a small restaurant in a neighboring town. The pork cheeks melted in your mouth and had good regional flavor.
Tourists should also know that they do not take credit cards - it is cash only.
I see no reason to return and cannot recommend

I didn't like the experience. I was treated in a somewhat rough way. When they asked for the menu they answered that I hoped they said what they had. I've never seen any menus. I haven't been informed of the price of anything. I was bothered by the way Mrs. spoke. Isabel. She needs a public service course. I paid 15 euros for two glasses of red wine that came from an open bottle.
Food quality is not everything in a restaurant. I felt some foreign shame for the way Mrs. Isabel was talking to the clients. I don't think I need to listen to the lady's overly loud phone calls.
Anyway... a place not to repeat.
I don't call this a typical restaurant. I call it a rough restaurant.

An idyllic place like Monsaraz Castle is shaded by this lousy restaurant. It's not that there's no menu, it's that there's a single dish except the couvert that I won't even comment on. After a visit of the surroundings, river beach included, what you want is to sit and enjoy Portuguese food...unless you land in this place where it says they serve meals. First of all, and it is not the only one they do not charge by card, but they also have no change. You sit and they tell you that the only one, if I say right, the only dish is crumbs with cod not crumbs of... if you do not crumb with... and of course if they are not well passed by the pan or the griddle, the bread is moist and you do not taste the cod. Needless to say, dessert should be the best thing about this place, I can't talk about it because I didn't give them a choice to put it on me. The price is exaggerated considering that you have no choice. I suspect they are making reforms, if so close down rather than give a bad service. I would return by the environment, in no case by this restaurant come unless judging by other comments. The table service is acceptable, they are better understood in English than in Spanish , it is the least reception and the presumed boss (he rang when asked for change) leave much to be desired. I don't recommend it until things change.

We booked a lunch at Sabores De Monsaraz about 10 days in advance. It is slow season so when we arrived, the place was empty and dark. We had arrived early, but close to our reservation time, the server let us into the empty restaurant. She served us some lovely appies and about 20 minutes later, Isabella arrived laden with what looked like insulated bags which held dishes of delightful food.
The appetizers included olives, bread, sliced chorizo sausage and cheese - all yummy with our cervezas. The main course included bacalhau (cod) served in a creamy, almost scalloped or bread pudding type sauce, pork cheeks (reminded me of beef bourguignon, but pork) and a rice casserole. Everything was absolutely delicious. We decided to not order dessert as we were still overfull from our previous night's experience at another restaurant.
Isabella was delightful and when I offered to adopt her and bring her to Canada, the only question she had was if that would be as my mother or my daughter! We both had a good laugh about that.
I highly recommend this place. I would think in the busy season, you will not experience our luck of having a private dining experience.

We arrived for a late lunch and were made very welcome!
As we were already hungry and didn't want to delay the service, we ordered the black pork cheeks which were fantastic! A very Portuguese dish that reminds us of grandma’s cooking.
The price at 20 euros per person was perfectly fair for all the food and drink we consumed.
Repeating!

Typically Alentejo restaurant with absolutely divine dishes.
The service is incredible, a familiar and welcoming atmosphere, giving the feeling that we are at home and with family.
Dona Isabel is friendly, responsible for the unmistakable flavor of the dishes available.
I recommend the black pork cheeks, as well as the cod crumbs.
In the end, try D. Isabel's Pennyroyal Liqueur and do as I did… buy a few bottles 😉

Under its privileged location, the owners have a certain attitude towards customers.
The restaurant is untidy inside and the service is normal but expensive.
They only had two dishes, but they didn't tell us when we booked, either cod crumbs were reasonable and pork cheek which was very good. Good wine, good dessert too.
Just a warning.
Be careful with the dozes, the same dose can be for one €12 which is what happened at the next table or for two €24 here at ours, that's just how it goes, but as the size is the same for two it's very small food . We thought we were deceived but they said it was like that…. Hahaha ATM out of service for at least 3 years, ask for invoice.
In the end there is that feeling we could have gone somewhere else that would have gone better, there is better nearby and much better down here. Search more

Very bad experience.
I was on leisure in this region, my wife and I arrived at the restaurant yesterday at 9:20 pm for dinner. As soon as we entered the space, we were questioned by a lady rudely and from a distance about what we wanted???!!! I replied that we wanted a table for two, for dinner, obviously!!! Maintaining the same rude and arrogant posture, the lady who we thought was responsible for the space, replied that it was no longer possible... well, we looked around and saw that there were some tables available, but we thought it best not to insist, given the way we were poorly received, it was unthinkable to have dinner there!!!
When we left the restaurant we even commented on whether we were poorly dressed or looked bad, which obviously wasn't the case!!!
It's surprising that a restaurant with this kind of reception is recommended by TripAdviser!!!

We were staying at the Vila Planície hotel... On the advice of friends, we went to dinner at Sabores de Monsaraz! We loved it! Get to know D. Isabel and her girls; enjoy a meal on the contemplative terrace! The starters, the cod crumbs, the bread, the cheese, the wine, the dessert, finally calming the stomach with a comforting pennyroyal liqueur, excusing the coffee...

We arrived at the restaurant at 2:40 pm and it only closed at 3:30 pm. We were attended to by a lady (probably the owner) who was extremely rude and rude. He told us that they had already closed and that was it!! Place never to return again!! We went to the Xarez restaurant and it was magnificent!!!
