A group of friends and I went to Jazz for Mardi Gras. Unfortunately, the table at which we were seated was next to the small band stage and far too close for any conversation. The band was good -- just too close and too loud....The restaurant is really not very big and on this particular night it was extremely crowded, making it difficult for the wait staff to navigate around the tables. Our waitress was excellent considering the circumstances. We did enjoy a variety of appetizers (fried pickles, huge battered onion rings, and really good shrimp). The breading on the pickles and shrimp was delicious. We all agreed that we would return but next time either sit farther from the band or go at a time when no band was playing.More

I have tried Jazz three times now and each time was a disappointment. It is just now close enough to New Orleans cuisine. The spices were flat. Traditional Cajun dishes were more like stew. They seem to attrack a clientele with drinks rather than food.

So my husband has a bad memory. We went to Jazz once in KC. I was disappointed when he and his business partner chose it for dinner in Columbia. Our waitress was super nice but the food is just not good. The pasta I ordered...treated like bad spicy ketchup, everything is fried in unseasoned corn meal. It's just not good. The red beans and rice showed up with what looked like cut up burned hotdogs on top. They were sent back they brought out more hotdogs they were trying to pass off as andouille, they weren't burned just overall not good. The poor waitress seemed horrified at this point. But it wasn't her fault. We made sure we tipped her well. The food is just not good. This is as I said the second location I have been to that I didn't enjoy. I tried.More

This was the fourth time we’ve eaten at Jazz while in Columbia and today was Chicken a la mer day. It was excellent, as was the fried catfish, my husband’s favorite. We’ve tried several different menu items and have never been disappointed with our selection.

My adult daughter and I were visiting Columbia and decided to try something a little different without breaking the bank. Jazz was a very pleasant experiment. We were able to walk in without messing with a reservation or waiting. Fair warning, it was fairly early...on a weekday. Soon after we arrived the place starting filling up, so I imagine that if we had come later or on a weekend we wouldn’t have been so lucky, especially since it is a modest sized establishment. There is a small bar with stools and past that a number of dark wood round tables (no booths). The atmosphere was comfortably informal and the service was quick and pleasant. The menu was distinctly Cajun with offerings like gumbo, fried pickles, crawfish, and Stuffed catfish . I went for a shrimp po’boy while my daughter felt adventurous and tried Alligator Bites. The po’boy was great, the shrimp were still tender under a flavorful breading. My daughter enjoyed the more exotic Alligator Bites, (yes they’re real Alligator) and a side of spicy jambalaya. The bill didn’t even require taking out a loan! All in all, a very good experience that I wish duplicate now that I’m in my home state. Sigh.More

The decorations of this restaurant is a good attempt to bring in the atmosphere of New Orleans to Columbia. It took several minutes for us to get anyone to show up to take our drink order. There were several people who kept showing up at...the table, so I’m not sure who our actual waitress was. There was only one other table there when we showed up. Our food did come out in a timely manner and it was hot. Overall it was just an average restaurant that was a bit overpriced for what we got.More

Nice atmosphere. We went for lunch. It took a while to get our food, but worth the wait. Free bread and seasoned butter. I had the crawfish etouffee. Great flavor but pretty spicy. My daughter had the shrimp Po-boy. It was hard to eat, but...tasted good. She subbed sweet potato fries for the coleslaw. They were really good and thicker than most we’ve tried.More

We stopped for lunch on a Saturday and were seated immediately. Many menu items offer options for portion size, though lunch pricing is only available on weekdays. My husband had fried catfish with hush puppies and coleslaw. He said the fish was perfectly cooked and...the sides were good. I had fried oysters with coleslaw and sweet potato fries (upcharge). The oysters were excellent, some of the best I’ve had, and the sides were good. We will go back when in Columbia.More
