The brussell sprouts on the dinner menu are to die for. They layer the flavors so that you get spicy, sweet, salty, and savory in each bite. You lick and think and try to figure it out... SO GOOD you just keep eating it. The Kampai house roll is phenomenal, the lobster roll is a conversation piece. The sashimi is... More

Came in for dinner with a few girlfriends. We were all in town for a teacher conference. The miso soup and the Kampai roll was great! The only downfall was the server did not really know about the beer selection. The food was great and the service was quick!

Our waitress had 5 tables and seemed to have trouble with handling them and was always running off to the kitchen. We sat with empty drinks for over 35 minutes and she even ignored the drink levels when delivering food. The food was overpriced and they added a lot of "fluff" to the plates to make them look "fuller". Over-all... More

I've had sushi at several places in Columbia, which were all good, and I had heard lots of good things about Kampai so I met my wife there for lunch. The place was clean and very stylish. I had tempura, miso soup and some sushi. The tempura was good except for the broccoli. It was a large piece of broccoli... More

Great spot for sushi in Columbia, appreciate that it's a bit off the path downtown so it stays a bit quieter. The chirashi never disappoints and the chef is excellent about respecting requests in the selection.

There are many sushi restaurants in Columbia Missouri and across the USA. I have eaten sushi in Japan, Hawaii, LA, New York, and many places in Europe. Simply said, I have not found sushi any better. The variety and quality of the food is incredible!! I am not sure how they find such fresh fish in Columbia MO but the... More

The restaurant is tucked back in an alley way and is set up nicely. It has an outdoor area with a cute patio and trendy decor. They were not busy when we went and the staff was friendly, but they served the worst sushi I have ever had. Neither me nor my friend found the taste impressive but the main... More

During a recent road trip to the Atlantic Coast, we got stuck in traffic not too far from home on I-70. We had expected to be in St. Louis by dinner but only made it as far as Columbia. So we stopped for dinner. Columbia is a college town and has a very nice downtown district. We opted for sushi... More

I had the cutest waiter ever. Tall blond who had all the right suggestions. The sushi chef, seanold and Ko really know their stuff. The owners are wonderful and the fish is always fresh!

We went there tonight and had a good sample of their sushi rolls: Tuna, Samurai Warrior, Tiger, Dragon, Sunset, Dynamite, Crazy, Caterpillar, Volcano, Jurassic, CoMo, Kampai. Plus white tuna, salmon and scallop sashimi, along with edamame and seawood salad. And, mochi ice cream. Of course, a few beers, too.

So...great service and good atmosphere, although access can be challenging especially if it is raining due to the "river alley" that is created.

To the food critique...our favorite rolls were the Samurai, Tiger and Sunset. The rest were just okay, nothing we would order again. Most rolls seemed a little bland and uninspired. If we had to choose the worst, it would be the tuna, simply not good. The sashimi was consistent with other places, so it was average. Mochi for dessert was interesting, good and flavorful.

Overall, it isn't anything special or above the other sushi places in town. While the owners may have come from St. Louis to try to make place in the Columbia market, they still have a ways to go.
