I visited 'Hot Plate' for breakfast when on my way to the Minihaha Falls whilst spending a few days in Minneapolis. This is an off the beaten track restaurant / cafe that is rather quirky and unique with its interior decor. The walls are hung...with hundreds of colourful paintings and the shelves are lined with hundreds of bizarrely cute figurines... but it works!! It really gives the place a unique and fun ambiance that I have never experienced in any other American restaurant. My server, Virginia, was lovely and even sat and spoke with for for a short while as I asked her about the best places to visit in the area besides the Falls. I ordered coffee and the Corned Beef Hash with 2 Eggs which was homemade and probably the best Corned Beef Hash I have ever had in the USA, (and I lived in California for 3 years and have travelled all over the rest of the USA regularly over the past 2 decades). With Tax my breakfast and coffee came to US$19.26 and it was worth every dime. I can highly recommend Hot Plate (and Virginia P) and hope to visit again some day.More

Big group visiting Minnesota, and went to the Hot Place just to explore local places. It was a great surprise on such a good place for food and service. First visit we were a group of 9 and they were able to accommodate us in...10-15 minutes. Coffee was excellent, and food was really good tasting and with a homemade feel. Menu has great variety and some of the plates have a very particular twist and really good. Our first visit was such a good experience (food and service) that we went a couple days before with an even bigger group with the same good experience. Great job to all the staff and keep it as good. must certainly will visit again when going to MinnesotaMore

Hot Plate is a fantastic choice for breakfast/brunch. The food and service are equally great at this fun little diner. Don't let the goofy decor (paint by number paintings and R&W Berries vintage figurines) fool you...you are in for some seriously good food at Hot...Plate. Every time I have been to Hot Plate most or all of the tables have been occupied. Don't be discouraged, tables open up and the food/service are worth a wait.More

We came to have breakfast with my partner's cousin and his partner on the Monday morning after Thanksgiving. We arrived at 9:30 AM and found the place 1/3 full and by the time we left it was packed--on a Monday! The informal atmosphere of the...place is aided by an enormous collection of paint-by-number paintings and other chachkis. Service was swift and very friendly. Coffee was good, if not outstanding, refreshed by merely thinking that I might need some more. (A full array of espresso drinks is also available.) I don't know about other measures, but both staff and customers were without masks when we were there. I suspect this may change as the pandemic conditions worsen. That was a little surprising given the statements above about Covid precautions. There is a very nice array of menu choices. Along with the standard American breakfast selection, there are quite a few Mexican choices. A breakfast version of the Quebecois monstrosity, poutine, was even on offer. There were four explicitly vegetarian options and a couple of gluten free choices but nothing entirely vegan. (I have a suggestion about that.) I chose the huevos divorciados: two eggs any style over corn tortillas with red and green salsa, queso fresco, slices of red onion and a side of delicious black beans, perfectly done and well spiced but not hot. A sign of the quality of preparation is that the red onion slices had been washed to remove the harsh edge of fresh onion. Few places seem to take the trouble these days. For two of us the bill was $30. Hot Plate really seems to need a good vegan option with as many customers as we saw; given the population of the neighborhood there have got to be quite a few vegans around. I would suggest considering adding a vegan soy chorizo hash, perhaps with some additional vegan meat product, or tofu. I used to frequent a little place in the Mission in San Francisco that served this and I came back for it again and again (and I'm not even vegan). Vegan pancakes made with soy or nut milk and an egg substitute would probably also be yummy.More

We loved it! My husband got a Mexican omelette and I got the classic breakfast. Their breakfast potatoes are life changing. If you are in Minnehaha, please stop here for breakfast!

We decided to try this place while visiting Minneapolis. We ordered pancakes(one Nutella), a philly omelet, poutine scramble, biscuits and gravy, and lastly a side of bacon. You get potatoes with the poutine and the biscuits and gravy. We really liked the poutine scramble ,...the pancakes , potatoes and the bacon. Everything else was OK. The cubside pickup locations were taken by other cars so we couldn't park in the designated spots and our food was ready in like 20 minutes instead of 10 like the order stated but we survived.More

My husband and I went to breakfast with our daughter and son-in-law. We are in town for a wedding and stumbled onto this restaurant. We arrived just before it opened at 8:00 and the place was full shortly after. The decor is funny, kitschy 70s....I had an omelet which might have been my favorite omelet ever. It was beautifully served and delicious. My son in law had the poutine which was also very good. My husband had a pancake with lingonberry butter, unique and yummy. The service was friendly and comfortable. If we lived here, we’d be regulars!! Try it. You won’t be sorry!More

The daily scramble (special) was outstanding. Doesn't open until 8 AM, but was practically full by 9 on a Monday morning. All the figurines and kitsch makes it a wonderful neighborhood hangout, with good food to boot.

We visited the Hot Plate on our last day in Minneapolis. It is not far from the airport. We both had the Grand Marais Scramble - a combination of scrambled eggs with cream cheese, smoked lake trout and grilled asparagus. It was excellent. Service was...great and the decor was interesting.More

The kitschy decor with paint by number pictures and more is a good backdrop for a delicious meal. Lots of choices: eight types of pancakes, hash, french toast, multiple egg dishes and so much more. Be prepared to wait, especially on weekends.

The service is terrific at this eclectic cafe serving breakfast food. The biscuits and gravy with wild rice was very good and my son loved the Bloomington sandwich with bacon, eggs, three kinds of cheese and maple syrup. My wife liked her nutella pancakes as...well. The prices were a little high but I assume that is because of the minimum wage law in Minneapolis. The decor in the restaurant has a lot of clowns and pictures.More

Call and fiind out. As the others have said, it is very small. We sat outside.....I don't think you are going to want to do that now!
