We've had this on our list for a long time so our expectations were high given the praise heaped upon the caramel rolls here. I work at a bakery known for its caramel and cinnamon rolls. They are big, they are sweet, they are delicious...and I rate all caramel and cinnamon rolls against those. As of yet, my daughter and I have not found a place with better rolls - we've been to several bakeries in MN at this point. Isles bakery is small with pay street parking nearby. It's Covid so this was just stand in line and then out the door. As we waited in line I saw the day old rolls wrapped in plastic. I was dismayed that they appeared to be very large pieces of doughy looking bread bigger than my fist. However, I still had hopes for the fresh ones. Given that part of the ordering may require some assembly (cutting it out of pan, adding icing) each order takes a bit of time and at least two people. We ordered a caramel roll, puppy dog tail, GF scone, scone, and a muffin. I couldn't order a cinnamon roll although I wanted to do our comparison tasting. It was just all dough, lots of dough, too much dough. Even the caramel roll looked like too much dough. We ordered the pecan roll so thoroughly coated in pecans. We sampled everything - the GF scone was the winner - WOW! I'd go back for that. The muffin and other scone, were good, well baked, definitely not overly sweet (which some may not appreciate but we really enjoyed that with our coffee). The caramel roll was a disappointment - Mostly just dough, not much cinnamon. The pecans were not very flavorful and just didn't add much. If you look at the picture of the roll you will see it's mostly just white dough with a very sparse and thin trail of cinnamon. We just didn't eat it. I thought the puppy dog tail was good, but realized it was too doughy as well (towards under baked) and what I was enjoying was the frosting. We didn't eat that either. So, for a local bakery, some good stuff. For a destination (as we do because we live nowhere near here), it was a one time experience. If you like your rolls like this (dough, dough, dough), ok, but I'm having a really hard time believing that. Perhaps if you tired the ones where I worked then you'd know why. The two workers we interacted with were incredibly nice and approachable. That GF Scone, wow.More

The restaurant is pretty. Covid friendly. There are some tables outside to eat. It was pretty good. We took a pecan dessert and two puppy dog tails. They are good buns.

If you are looking for a scrumptious alternative to cinnamon rolls, try Isles Bun puppy dog tails. They are addicting and not much is better than a warm bun not long out of the oven. The puppy dog tails aren't too big, either, so you...can enjoy one without the guilt.More

Puppy dog tails. That’s all I have to say. They will, if fact, change your life. A must visit in Minneapolis.

Our family has been going to this gem in South Minneapolis just blocks from Lake of the Isles for decades. Great buns, scones, and other treats. The "puppy dog tails" are available for smaller appetites and no animals were ever harmed in their making. They...are great for eating in the newly enlarged space, bringing home, or to take to work or school. Your popularity is guaranteed if you share any of these delights with others. Isles Bun and Coffee may well become your next happy place.More

Wow, dropping my son off at U of M and wanted something sweet before I drove home to Wisconsin. Stopped by and was not disappointed. Friendly people. Cinnamon bun was magical. Even gave me a complimentary doggy tail for my first visit. Will definitely return....Thank you.More

The place has recently expanded so it's even better! The rolls are huge and they give you a vat of frosting to put on top! They have other bakery items too and coffee, it's our treat to Dad on Fathers Day every year!
