You need to prepare to go to Al’s. It is packed. You will have to wait to get a space. I brought a book and was ready to hang out til there was room for me at the counter. Delicious pancakes. Famous for the breakfasts...and the experience!More

Throwback breakfast diner with delicious food and super-friendly service. Line up before it opens to get into the first group at the counter. Cash only, no tables. We enjoy this when visiting my daughter at the U.

Been a few days in Minneapolis and suffered from my usual jet lack! What to do at 5 am? I googled this place and walked for nearly one hour to get there. Actually what you find could be a set in a 1960s movie! It’s...this little caffe with just a long bar, that serves at best 10-12 people at any time. It was easy to get a seat as it was very early and I couldn’t fault it. Yes, it’s old and basic, but staff welcomed me warmly and I felt like a local. The man next door comes for 40 years and as so many has its yellow regular customer booklet, that is sth I have never seen in my life before. Coffee was good, hot, honest. Breakfast as well and the portions were enormous! I was so tempted that I had two dishes! Was it Haut Cuisine? No, it wasn’t but it was just all in all a perfect morning with a nice honest breakfast, in a place I won’t ever forgetMore

If you don;t like a small place and a little cramped this place is not for you. But if you want the best breakfast around and great service then this is your place. This is CASH ONLY so leave the plastic at home. I've been...coming here since 1984 when I went to the U and it hasn't changed at all.....and that's what I love about the place. Now that I live out of the state I miss it terribly. The cooks and staff are great, add a memory to the shelves if you'd like and definitely have the pancakes! Sometimes you need to slide down while you're eating to fit couples and things BUT this is what is cool about the place. So if you're an uptight person, stay away! For everyone else, enjoy!More

So glad we FOUND this place! It’s tiny, and we walked past it, even though we we following directions from Trip Advisor. The breakfast was amazing and matched the top billing it received. PS: they don’t take credit cards, but there are ATMs very close...by.More

Very tiny place packed with people. Do you want to sit at a stool with people crammed in behind you waiting for you to finish eating? No way this place could pass a fire or health inspection. Don't believe the hype. This place is a...dumpMore

I was visiting on my own, and based on the reviews had to try this place. It did not disappoint! I visited around 9:30am as I had to get a bus across town to get there, but I must've missed the morning rush as it...wasn't too busy. It's a snug seat in between the other customers, but very comfortable. Everyone seemed to know everyone else that came and went, a very friendly atmosphere. Even though I was on my own I felt included in the conversations between the staff and customers, but also didn't feel any pressure if I wanted to just keep to myself. For food I had The José (hash browns, poached egg, salsa and cheese) with a side of bacon and a side of pancake. The food was incredible and enough to keep me going for most of the day. And of course great coffee which the waitress ensured was always full! A great experience, and a must stop for anyone in Minneapolis.More

Best for groups of 3 or less. Not infant/toddler friendly. The space has no tables, just a long bar with about 12? barstools. Those waiting for a seat line up behind you, it's a tight squeeze. The food comes out super fast but I didn't...feel particularly rushed to eat, even with people behind me waiting - but I could see how having someone literally standing behind you waiting to eat could be disconcerting and make you feel rushed. The wait usually isn't too long because they are really 'on it' with service and getting food to people quickly. Staff is very nice. Space is warm, there aren't fan's blowing in the diner so it's a bit humid and warm, but not uncomfortable. The food was absolutely delicious! I had the summer special (eggs, mozzarella, basil, tomato scramble) with toast and a side of bacon, orange juice and coffee. It was amazing. A bit pricey for breakfast, $16 (not incl tip) for one person; but I will go back because I know my husband will love this place and the food. Worth the experience!More

This cute little cash only restaurant serves the best bacon strips and best toast/spread ever. We were a group of 3 people, had to wait for about 45 mins in a very narrow space standing and we do not regret it. Given the quality and...taste of the food, am ready to wait for an hour next time. Totally worth it. Prices were cheap to reasonable with variety of food options. Staff were friendly and the lady was warm enough to place a ‘hand made message written paper boat’ by my friend in the display. We had the best time being here. Must try people.More

If you’re looking for a hole in the wall dive diner that serves up a great breakfast, then this is your spot. With only about 12 stools available, be there early to snag one or be prepared to wait...which is worth it. Great tasting thick...slices of bacon, nice crispy hash brown and good cooked eggs made a great breakfast. My wife ordered the eggs Benedict and says it’s in her top 2 she’s ever tasted.More
