Tried to go last week, but the line was too big. I have loved this dining institution on the University of Minnesota campus for 35 years. Newly retired and new to trip advisor.

This is a college, quirky joint to me, and that's about it. It's basically a hallway that you usually stand up in to eat. It always has a line outside, because it's tiny, giving it the impression that it's really popular. Don't get me wrong, 30 years ago in college this place would be 5 stars for me. Now, it's... More

We always try to get to Als when they first open. Their pancakes are out of this world. I am a breakfast freak, and Al's always hits it out of the park. Quirky and small, the wait staff must be imported from New York, but in this case it adds to the charm. Be prepared you might be standing in... More

Al's Breakfast is a U of Minn institution according to my wife who went to law school there in the '60's. The space is tight and the food wonderful. It felt like college again.

I'm a stickler for breakfast, and Al's....well....was just average. It wasn't the tight quarters or the fact that on this day the food was served on a paper plate as I've been to many places. However the blueberry pancakes with walnuts didn't leave me overwhelmed. What I did like was the service and company of the regulars. Id go back... More

Triple D made me do it…we were in St. Paul for a few days so we decided to seek out Al’s Breakfast and find out what it’s all about. Got there about 9am and expected to see a waiting line but in fact were seated within about 15 minutes. (Could be because school was out for the summer). I wasn’t... More

perfect hash browns, great pancakes, thick bacon, ; simply the best breakfast in Minneapolis. Now the restaurant is only 10' wide and only has 15 stools at the counter, so you need to stand in line and wait for the wait staff to assign you a stool. Just be patient and follow the protocol, it is part of the experience.... More

Worth the wait...nice people. A bit hot and stuffy because it's so small. The pancakes look burnt but taste delicious..

There are plenty of great places for breakfast in the Cities'. Why the Cities' food writers adore this place is beyond me. I wouldn't dare take someone from out of town here. You wait literally inches behind other people eating their breakfast for your turn. There are what, maybe 12 stools to sit at? Not a dignified way to eat... More
