We were staying at Fitgers just south of the Portland Malt Shoppe. After dinner we asked the front desk of Fitgers to recommend an ice cream shoppe.....immediately they replied The Portland Malt Shoppe. It was a cool night, we stepped out the front door, followed the sidewalk north at the most 1 block. Watch out for a family of Racoons,... More

The Portland Malt Shoppe is a classic walk-up malt shop in a great old building not far from the Lake Walk. I had a chocolate malt -- what else do you order at a classic spot? It was fine -- thick and chocolaty -- but there were small chunks of unblended malt powder throughout. I like malt so it wasn't... More

My wife and I both got kid cones. I got praline pecan- nothing special. My wife got chocolate chip cookie dough, which was filled with chocolate chips, and had occasional pieces of cookie dough. All and all the ice cream itself was ok. Both of our regular flat bottom cones were stale, which is unfortunate... The views were nice, but... More

We were touring Duluth last evening and our friend treated us to a malt from The Portland Malt Shop. We were told that this is a must while in Duluth and, after having a peanut butter/chocolate malt, I totally understand why. There was a long line but it really didn't take that long and it was so worth the wait.... More

I will start by saying we only had the ice cream cones and not a malt. However I would not think the malts would be any better as they use the same ice cream. Anyway ice cream was not that great. I have had much better other places. Also we had to wait in line for quite a while as... More

I love the malts they serve, but service is painfully slow. There has been more than 1 occasion this summer where we've been in line for a VERY long time, and people at the next window were helped immediately. So then we moved to that window, and no one even addressed us for 5 minutes...at least they could say "I'll... More

Stopped at PortLand malt shop and had some great ice cream. They were very busy and had quite the wait. But it was worth it.

Didn't think the ice cream was anything special. Maybe because we waited a half hour in line, service was super slow. Seemed disorganized inside. People that were in line after us got their food before we did. They did have a nice view of lake by the tables though.

We stopped for a malt last year while in Duluth and put it on our must do list for this year's trip. The outside is adorable and the malts are good. They aren't that big but they are really filling. I love ice cream and had trouble finishing it. Be prepared to take your malt/ice cream with you as there... More

I had a strawberry hot fudge sundae, and didn't realize it would actually be strawberry ice cream...to my delight! They did it right, too, tons of hot fudge on the bottom and even distributed on the sides. The ice cream was amazing and had chunks of whole strawberries in it. Topped with whip and cherry, delightful! And we ate our... More
