So good we went twice!

Our weekend trip began on Friday evening and I wanted to dine outside. There were only four tables outdoors, but they told us our wait would be 45 minutes and it was under 40 min. We selected a salad and four small plates. The winners were the filet bites and ribs. Saturday night waits at the other restaurants in town were long, so we decided to go back to Taste and this time sat inside where the tables were well distanced and all servers and patrons not sitting down wore masks. The small plates stars this night were the Korean BBQ Chicken and both the salmon (broiled I think) and crispy Blue Gill. Would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant!

Small plates are sumptuous

We stopped for lunch on a sunny Sunday at their small outdoor patio. Very friendly staff. The hostess had stepped away and every staff member that past us apologized for the wait and the hostess would be with us shortly. I started off with the pear martini which was yummy. Our waitress answered all of our questions with details about the size of the plates and the ingredients. We started with the small plates of the Cuban shrimp and fried artichokes. The breading on the artichokes was very light with a delicious dipping sauce. The Cuban shrimp sat on a spicy red sauce. It also came with slices of garlic baguette. The sauce was so good that my husband told the waitress he could drink it! She then brought us more of the baguette slices to finish off the sauce. I had the ultimate grilled cheese with garlic spatzle ( which is an unusual side). Both were out of this world. My husband had the Cuban sandwich and lobster bisque. He dipped the sandwich in the bisque and they were delicious. Food, drinks and service were outstanding!

It's the best around!

My wife and I decided to celebrate our 25th anniversary in South Haven. We had never visited before and were unsure of the best restaurant. We tried one place that was highly touted however after a 40 minute wait outside we experienced only poor service and mediocre food choices. The next night, our anniversary dinner we tried Taste and wish we had chosen this restaurant first. Our server, Heidi B., did a fantastic job, made some great recommendations and actually made some time for a brief visit. The food was some of the best. My wife enjoyed the entree filet with the beet salad while I tried the bbq ribs and romaine wedge salad. Both excellent. We came back the next night and tried the small plates (tapas). I would highly recommend the Korean BBQ and Cuban shrimp and my wife had the filet bites which is a small plate version of the entree filet. By the time we were done we had no room for dessert. Some of the best food I have had at any restaurant.

Tasty but pricey

It’s a unique experience , the dishes are tasty but they are a bit pricey Recommended We had the sweet and spicy shrimps , the potato’s pancakes and Tuna tartar . They tasted great but clearly not enough . The waitress should have warned us that this is not enough as the portions are not usually for an American restaurant

Bad Experience

We went to Taste for an early dinner. My husband had a salad served to him as a side item. After eating several bites he noticed a strange looking piece of lettuce. When he picked it up with his fork we realized that it was a paper towel!!! Yuck! The waitress notice and snatched the salad off the table. The manager the came over and said that they use paper towels between layers of lettuce to reduce moisture and when a worker scooped the lettuce up with gloved hands he didn’t notice the towel. At least that’s the story. They did comp the sandwich entree and gave my husband a free dessert but every time I think about that paper towel it turns my stomach. We will not be back.

Best restaurant in South Haven

My family and I went to a restaurant across the street from Taste and we were told by the hostess there that because the cooks were behind, they were not serving anymore food. Well I’ve never heard that before. No problem, it worked out for the BEST...we ended up at TASTE! Oh my goodness, it was delicious!! We had a wonderful waitress all the way around. Highly recommended eating here.

Long wait but good food and service.

Well organized for limited dining during Covid. I put out name in and was told around 1 1/4 wait. Sent a text right away with your wait time. We just walked around the town till the next text. We chose to split a pear salad, amazing potato pancakes with sour cream and apple chutney, artichoke bites and fillet bites. All was very good other then the very ho hum artichoke bites. We also loved the pear, cranberry crisp served ala mode. Server was good with drink and food choice. I loved the local pear cider.

Rude, inhospitable hostess, very poor first impression

I do not ususally write reviews of restaurants, however, I felt compelled to share our most recent visit to this "restaurant" on Thurs, August 12th,2021. We arrived to be told the wait was 2.5 hours for a table for six. We were told we could wait at the bar, and have a cocktail. We proceeded to the bar, ordered some wine, and were relaxing next to the bar with our group. Next thing I know the hostess was in my face saying that they don't allow "standing" next to the bar!!! There were many open tables, as the place was obviously understaffed, so we asked if we could just sit at a table out of the way. "Those tables are spoken for" was the answer, "you'll have to leave" I've never been treated so rudely at an establishment where we were about to spend hundreds of dollars. Inadequate COVID protocol - so-so food

We ordered take-out since indoor dining is a bad practice during COVID, and expected to either get the food outside or quickly go inside and get it, to minimize exposure. However, when we got there, instead of the bags being close to the door, we were directed to the back of the restaurant, which was full of patrons (obviously without masks), Perhaps the owners don't care about the risks their patrons must run to get their food, or they are simply unware of the last evidence and resulting safety procedures. To make things worse, some of the food was OK, some was flavorless. A large and not focused menu is often an indication that nothing is given much attention, and this was proof of that point. Not recommended.

Great fillet and tartar

Food was exceptional. The fillet was perfectly cooked and a generous serving and the tartar was addictive. The staff were very friendly. Everything was reasonably priced for the quality of food. Thanks for being open on a cold COVID Monday in January!

Dinner Winner for Sharables

We had an early dinner on a Tuesday night at Taste based on reviews here. Seated inside (raining) but well spaced and all servers wore masks. Service was very good; kids ordered pear martinis (strong, just “alright” according to them) and I had a glass of Pinot Grigio. Started with 2 rolls, the Taste-y roll (tempura), the Phoenix roll and avocado roll with added cream cheese—all fantastic. Shared some small plates; filet bites were tender and spiced perfectly, like buttah, Cuban shrimp was fabulous (got extra baguette to finish the sauce!) and the blue gill was tender, mild and fall-apart great. Highly recommended!

Great food and drinks!

Even with limited capacity with COVID we were sat within an hour of placing our name on the list on a Saturday night. Taste was our favorite meal of the trip with the variety and types of food offered. There’s zero hesitation to go back on a subsequent trip to South Haven.

Honestly, one of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time. The food was great and the small portions at a reasonable price allowed my wife and I to try several different dishes. Truly a great place, and we will be back!

Great for small plates!

We only dined our one night during our stay in south haven - it was a great choice. We ate only small plates and every one of them was fresh and delicious. Dining in the COVID environment can be challenging but Taste really delivered a great experience.

GREAT FOOD

Made reservations for Friday at 8 and were seated 10 mins before. The place was full with social distancing being observed. The place is casual and promotes small plate. We ordered 4 small plates and the quantities were large. All 4 dishes were great. Chefs Mac and cheese was top notch. Salad, ribs and bread/butter were way above par. Prices were extremely reasonable. I would go here once a week if I lived nearby. Highly recommend this place.
