Trattoria Da Luigi
Review
About
A Italian -inspired sensation that has become a staple of Royal Oak Dining on the corner of Fifth and Washington in Downtown Royal Oak. Trattoria Da Luigi offers much more than exquisite Italian dining, as their customers are immersed into an entire Italian experience upon walking through the doors. The signature of Trattoria Da Luigi, to be better known as Da Luigi’s, is unique to Italian culture as the menu gleams with history behind all of the dishes featured. From traditional Italian cuisine to “true” pizza from the rare wood-burning oven, DaLuigi’s prepares rustic specialties that customers cannot cook at home. It is emphasized that “spaghetti and meatballs” will not be among their entrées! A full bar showcasing wine with a heavy Sicilian influence will also be available to customers. The old Tuscan, farmhouse theme resonates throughout the restaurant bringing a comfort similar to that of being surrounded by family.

Oh my word. How have I missed this place before today? Drive through RO all the time and have never noticed it! Well, looking for a restaurant to share a meal with friends and Luigi’s was recommended by my son so we thought we’d give it a try.
From the minute I walked in the door I was enchanted. Charming decor, Italian music playing and the nicest waitress, Delaney as well as Mario, Luigi’s son who stopped to chat.
The food menu was plentiful and I had trouble deciding but settled on Insalata Siciliano and the Gnocchi. The salad was brought out first and was so tasty I was tempted to lick the plate clean! 😂 Then the gnocchi in cream sauce with ground Italian sausage arrived. Heaven in each bite. Little pillows of melt in your mouth goodness. Not the hard rocks I’ve been accustomed to which put them on a level above anything else. The two dishes were just the right amount to not feel stuffed yet satisfying. There was room for dessert! My choice: torta al Limoncello with raspberry sauce. Light, faintly lemony and the perfect ending.
Trattoria de Luigi has become a new fav and I’ll be back. .....often

The vibe at Trattoria Luigi is Romantic and cozy with well picked Italian music accompanying your meal. Chad was an attentive and nice waiter.
The food is well prepared and tasty! The fresh Italian bread comes out warm to lather it in garlic butter spread before the appetizer.
The tiramisu was like a piece of heaven, so delicious.

Tratoria Da Luigi is a great little Italian restaurant that reminds me of places I’ve been in great restaurant cities like Chicago, Rome, and Windsor, Ontario.
You walk in and the owner will either seat you or be nearby. (I saw one review that called him “grumpy.” That’s not true at all, in my experience! Chat with him. I’ve chatted with him several times. I’d describe him as friendly, cordial, interesting, and authentic. He is what he appears to be.)
The food is also very authentic. None of the entrees are run-of-the-mill; they’re all a bit upscaled from typical. The recipes seem closer to dishes you would get if you were in Rome or maybe Naples. Italy, that is. I ordered Saltimbocca tonight, very good
Menu items are a la carte. I ordered soup, which is just chicken broth with tortilini that they don’t advertise on the menu for some reason. Very simple. And I asked my waiter for a small side of spaghetti bolognase, also not on the menu. Yeh, that red spaghetti sauce reminds me why I love Italian.
Nice cheesecake with pistachio and a raspberry drizzle for dessert.
Good date night ambiance, too. Sort of romantic, literally. Enjoy!

We came here for a family event with a large group. We were glad they were able to accommodate us. We got our orders of drinks and appetizers quickly. Our main meals came out some time later. The food was good, but it was this point that a group of us overheard our waiter and the restaurant manager discussing about getting our party out the door. One of our guests at the end of the table also heard them discussing with the wait assistant to not refill our water glasses. At this point we became pretty disappointed with their attempt to try to flip our table quickly. We were celebrating a family event and felt rushed out the door. We considered ordering some more drinks just out of spite, but we decided to go elsewhere after.

We were in Royal Oak with old friends & ended up here since it was a convenient location. From our sourpuss server Tracy to the manager they need a lesson in customer service. The food was mediocre. My insalada mista came undressed but Tracy was no where to be found. Three of my friends ordered the ravioli. They enjoyed them. I ordered the alla Norma. The pasta was so overcooked it was falling apart. Nothing Al dente here except the staff. They cleared the dishes before all of us were finished. The saving grace were the desserts. We had the tiramisu, limoncello cake & chocolate cake. All were enjoyed.

Our server was decent. The food was average. There were 4 of us for dinner. Two enjoyed their dishes, but said they were nothing special and a bit overpriced. One said “nothing impressive”. I ordered poorly. The menu didn’t describe the dish I ordered properly, and I didn’t like the bland red sauce (the food had NO taste). When the server came by, I told him the menu didn’t indicate that type of sauce, and it wasn’t what I had expected.... He offered to get me something else... But then the owner stopped by the table and grumbled... and as he walked away said “read the menu”. Well, I had read the menu which said tomato sauce on other entrees, but NOT on the one I ordered. The owner didn’t think we heard him, but we did, and he was rude. No nice service or pride in the food. I don’t have an issue with the server, but the owner ensured none of us will go back there. The place crowds the tables together, and it’s loud also.

Very quaint and very awesome! The calamari appetizer was the best I've ever had. Veal Marsala was so full of flavor and portion was perfect. Luigi is out talking to customers welcoming everyone, I will definitely be back!

Luigi loves authentic Sicilian food and has one of the very few true Italian pizza ovens in the metro area. The vibe here is cozy, the service relaxed and responsive, and the food delicious. The true mark of its quality? There are always, always, always Italians dining there. A simply good experience.

So delicious! My roommate and I tried it for the first time tonight and everything was excellent, among the most flavorful pasta I've ever eaten. We sat outside and our server was great. We'll definitely go back.

We went here during covid-19. It was not overly clean, but we sat outside so we weren’t worried. The food was good, small portions for the salad and the calamari. But it did have a good taste. The sauces they had had a good taste. We have two young kids, it’s not really kid friendly.

We met a friend for dinner. Food is wonderful here. I had the bean salad app and pastiche. Hubby had gnocchi and friend had chicken. We were all very happy with our food, and the Montepulciano wine was excellent. Will be back soon!
No photos-we were too busy eating!

Excellent and authentic Italian cuisine! The whole place was amazing, we were seated by the owner, they had Italian channels on the TV above the bar! I ordered the calamari to start and had the cacio de Pepe for dinner, both excellent!

We wondered in to this wonderful authentic Italian restaurant by chance. Nothing I like more than going into a place with no expectations and be blown away! Loved the wine, dinner and desert! We can’t wait to come back with a group friends.
