The Wagon Wheel was great for our group of 10 adults. The atmosphere is casual and laid back. There was live music playing that was great — the perfect volume to enjoy the performance or talk with your friends without shouting.
I ordered a drink pearl off of their seasonal drink menu (I did the disaronno blush on the fall 2024 menu) and it was great. I also got the pizza burger which was good!
Can’t wait to go back next time I’m in town.

Saw a sign off the highway and then looked up the reviews since we were ready to stop for lunch. The good reviews are right on! The staff is friendly and seating is good and it is attached to a bowling alley - but appropriately separated.
I got the chicken Caesar salad and my friend got one of their grinders since it was one of the specials of the day. He got the grilled chicken grinder and it came with regular French fries or he could have paid to upgrade to onion rings or sweet potato fries.
The chicken in my salad was absolutely top notch and cooked perfectly. The lettuce was fresh and crispy. I always like my dressing on the side so don’t let the picture bother you if you like your dressing mixed in.
My friend really liked his grinder and it was so big he had to cut it in half to eat it. He said the fries were fresh and hot too.
All in all a great experience!!

We saw the billboard on the Interstate and decided to give it a try for lunch. It is a bit of a drive from the interstate but it was packed on a weekday. It definitely looked like the local hangout. They offer a pretty large menu and had daily specials which is always good, I think. We each tried a burger and my wife upgraded to the sweet potato fries. They charge $0.50 extra for lettuce and tomato and my wife’s burger came with a little piece of limp lettuce. Otherwise, the food was good but the service was a little slow. Oh, there’s a bowling alley attached if you’re inclined to work off some calories afterwards.

My husband and I made a trip to Lansing for Valentine’s Day. On the way from Holland MI we stopped in Portland for lunch. We had noticed the billboards on I-96 and decided to go there for our lunch. We were intrigued and a little bit skeptical about how good the ambiance and food would be with a restaurant attached to a bowling alley. We were pleasantly surprised. They were taking all the Covid precautions and the bowling alley was separated from the restaurant so you didn’t heard pins falling during your meal. My husband had the prime rib Valentine’s special and I had a “redneck Reuben” which was really a very nice barbecue sandwich. He reported that the prime rib was seasoned and cooked perfectly and noticed that there was little fat or bone to the meat. Our service was excellent and we are happy to have discovered this restaurant- may even go bowling along with a future stop to eat!

While driving through the area, I stopped at Wagon Wheel. After getting there, I started having second thoughts, as it was the grille inside a bowling alley. But, upon walking in, I started to feel a bit better....there was a nice separation between the alley and the restaurant; the grille/restaurant definitely had a country/western vibe to it.. I was by myself and sat at the bar. While I didn't have any, they did appear to have a very good beer list. The bartender working was extremely friendly, and made for a pleasant visit. And, most important....the burger was excellent! In seriousness, this was one of the best burgers I had in a while...and want to go back soon!!

My neighbor was raving about the Wagon Wheel so we had to stop in when we were in the Portland area. It was my wife and my two little girls. The service was great. I felt left out since I didn’t know everyone else there like most of the regulars. But that didn’t mean they slumped on service. I got a BBQ bacon cheeseburger. It was good, maybe a little overcooked to my liking. My wife got a fruity salad. We were just sad the bowling was closed down. We will definitely make our way back.

Eaten here plenty of times. Been here on Trivia nights before. Tonight, the music was too loud. And apparently the host likes to hang out in the 80's because that was pretty much what he played. Annoying. Could barely have a conversation with my dinner date. Food was good. Fries were nice and hot. Too bad the experience was overshadowed by Hair Band anthems.

Pizza, soup and salad bar on Monday was quantity over quality. Would not eat that again. Soup was tasteless, salad was white lettuce, and pizza was doughy.

Great food! It’s attached to a bowling alley so you’ve got that as well. Had a burger and fries and it was great. Wife said the breadsticks were some of the best she’s ever had.

The Wagon Wheel in Portland, Michigan has great food and great service! The best burgers around! And many other fine entrees on the menu!
The Wagon Wheel is very supportive of the community hosting several fundraisers for organizations throughout the year!
Would definitely recommend it as a great place to eat!

Travelling up I-69 we saw a billboard advertising the Wagon Wheel Americal Grill. We are always looking for unique places off of the interstate to experience. The billboard enticed us by the picture on the sign. We got off the exit and not knowin where it was located, traveled through to the other side of Portland and found the grill. We were surprised that the grill was attached to a bowling alley. Now don't get the wrong idea about grills in bowling alleys in comparison with this one. I would say that the bowling alley was attached to the grill. Entering the grill it was a normal resturant setting and we were seated rapidly. Our server Ali was very pleasant and immediately took our drink orders. In no time she returned and took our order. We were a family of 3 and my wife and step-son chose to split a perch sandwich. I ordered a club sandwich. The service was fast, which we appreciated since we were travelling, and our food arrived hot, tasty, and more than expected. The serving size was excellent and the cost was average. I would recommend taking the beaten path through Portland MI to enjoy this establishment.
