About
In 1936 Beverly and Rubye Osborne were driving west from Oklahoma to California. They had no reason to be joyful. They were middle aged and the Depression had wiped out their savings. On this particular afternoon it seemed that everyone in the state was attempting to escape the famine of the Oklahoma dust bowl. With not much more than their meager belongings and a basket of fried chicken, Beverly Osborne coaxed his Ford pickup across the barren prairie. Suddenly, a bump in the rutted road scattered the chicken and basket. Picking it up, Rubye complained "this is really Chicken in the Rough®." With that chance remark, a fortune was born. Beverly turned his truck around and headed back home. A man who, on instinct, had made a modest fortune and lost it - Beverly reasoned that "fingers were made before forks" and that chicken could be a cheap source of food at a time when incomes were sparse. Beverly learned from his previous business experience and failures that every business must provide customer satisfaction by identifying customers' needs and how to satisfy those needs better than anyone else. Soon, with the money he had received from the sale of his wife's wedding ring, he had an operation serving fried chicken with shoestring potatoes, hot biscuits and honey. That was the delectable meal that started "Fast Food - Fried Chicken Franchising" - long before McDonald's or Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I had lunch there today. I like the old style vibe of the place with it's 50's diner feel. Love the booths and the bar stools. The staff I came into contact with were friendly and all were properly masked.
I had a bowl of chicken noodle soup. Big noodles and huge chunks of chicken made it very hearty. Really good. I then had one of the traditional chicken dinners that came with the shoe-string fries, coleslaw, and a roll. Everything was good...albeit quite greasy. I kind of expected it to be oily based on all the prior reviews. Anyway, I enjoyed my lunch. Conclusion: solid/good fried chicken. Be ready for it to all be quite oily.

I am a sucker for places that are not afraid to be proud of their history. This place is like walking into the 50’s! Some restaurants pay some interior designer huge bucks to look like this. Krystal just decided to not change. So cool.
Then you try the food. First. Ok, it’s not actually healthy. But gosh is it good. Fried chicken is perfect. Walleye is great. The fries are sublime. And my personal favorite is the Mac and Cheese topped with meatloaf.
Did I mention the appetizers? Who has seen fried gizzards or fried livers on any menu in the last 50 years? It’s adventurous and not for everyone’s taste, but so good.
There’s more. More than worth a try.

This is the premier location for fried chicken. The seasoning salt at each table can go on almost anything and is delicious as well. The 2 and 4 piece meals are going to fill you up depending on your appetite! The mashed potatoes and chicken gravy are the best in town easily!

What a wonderful little establishment! The decor was adorable-(50/60s diner), the hostess and waitress were kind and attentive to us throughout our meal.
The good was FANTASTIC! I had chicken and waffles with the pecan honey sauce. Too die for ! Another person had the buffalo chicken Mac and cheese-rich and creamy. The 3rd person had an amazing black blue burger

Wife and I have had Fried chicken in many location in the Southern U.S. "Chiken in the Rough" at this location is always the best we've eaten. Polite and attentive service, the chicken is always prepared fresh when ordered, and the atmosphere of a 1950s bar is welcome and friendly!!!!!!!

Stopped in after my sons football game. Been recommended before, so gave it a try. Ordered the “spicy” cheese bites as an appetizer, good by not hugely spicy-tasted like pepper jack cheese bites. Good but could’ve used a bit more zing. Son ordered the mac and cheese, served on a cast plate. Good taste and cheese blend who doesn’t like mac and cheese as a kid!!! Wife got the chicken tender meal, she loved it. Cole slaw was very good, fries were perfect with malt vinegar on them. I ordered the 1/2 chicken meal. Fries and cole slaw were good. Chicken was plentiful, but way too salty for my taste. Not sure if it was salted
after the cooking or the mix not mixed enough. Had leftover chicken from here before and didn’t taste anywhere near this salty. Waitress was good and attentive, could’ve offered an exchange of the chicken after Intold
her it was a little to salty. Nevertheless food was good, I’ll give it another shot!!

My wife and I enjoy this unique place that has been around forever. Just has that neighborhood feel to it. And when you have young ladies like Robin helping you decide what you might choose for your evening meal, you can not go wrong. Thanks for places like this!

My son was burned by thier chicken noodle soup. We ordered it brought it home it sat for around 15 minutes then when he sat to eat it and removed the lid it spilled onto his pajamas. It was very traumatic my son was crying, screaming, and intense pain. We ended up at urgent care. We will go today for a follow up. My mother-in-law called and was told that this is the temperature that they must maintain. Of course, soup is expected to be hot, but if the liquid Falls onto your skin It should not instantly boil your skin off. as a courtesy My mother-in law called to let them know how dangerous this is. If I had taken my baby there and was sitting at the restaurant and their waitress accidentally spilled the soup on my baby or if I spilled the soup on myself, serious injury would occur. My mother-in-law was offered no apology No empathy.
I called and spoke with the owners son-in-law instead of offering an apology or saying thank you we will check on it and make sure that it’s safe moving forward I told the owner woukd reach out. They never did. My family has loved and ate at this restaurant for years the disappointment that I feel for how this was handled is sincerly sad And disappointing. It’s not your child and you’re more concerned with your business I understand but like today, my son has to miss his hockey tryout because the burn on his thigh is so bad and you couldn’t even say I’m sorry we will check on it. After I reached out to them on Facebook with a very kind message, I was blocked and the soup was promoted.

We must always visit when in Port Huron! The food is always delicious and plentiful. A favorite is their Reuben sandwich...so tasty! Also like the pickerel. Serving staff are always friendly and very efficient. The atmosphere has not changed much since I went there with family a long time ago. It's a great step back in time with good memories. Don't forget to top off your visit with one of their desserts - sharing a hot fudge cream puff with someone is a real treat!!

A port Huron legend. Feeding hungry folks for decades. Great fried chicken and fries! Yes lots of oil, but that is what makes their “chicken in the rough” so famous. Try their onion rings too!

So disappointed. Mom and I ate here a few days ago. The chicken was really bad. Dry. Tasteless. Bland. Really bad. Such a shame. It would have been better to go to Popeye's or KFC or literally anywhere else. Service was excellent. The chicken...awful.

What a great find! We stumbled across this place while on a road trip, passing through the Port Huron area. Absolutely the best fried chicken we have ever had in any restaurant. So fresh and crispy. Great taste. Fries were good too! We will definitely be back.

I've been here a number of times and have never regretted it. They do a really good job with the ribs. The chicken is excellent. They do a very good burger as well. They also have the little shoestring french fries, which I like. The service has always been A grade! The next time I'm in Port Huron, I'll pay them another visit.

All the times we’ve been to Port Huron, never stopped here. Since we’re staying at hotel close by, thought we’d check in out. Neat little place. Had a beer. Next time out this way will eat here. Smells yummy.

I have been coming here for 21 years for the Chicken in the Rough and it has always been the best I have ever had. The last 2 times I have had dried over cooked small pieces of terrible chicken. Never again!
