About
City Park Grill, one of Petoskey’s oldest buildings, was originally constructed in 1875. McCarty Hall, as it was then known was a malesonly billiard parlor that offered cigars and “intoxicating beverages.” Today, City Park Grill maintains a loyal clientele with house-made cuisine, focusing on locally procured produce, meats and lake fish, an awardwinning wine collection and house-made biscuits straight from the oven

We had made a reservation for dinner here and was disappointed to have to sit on chairs that were not comfortable in a small cramped area in front of the restaurant. We asked to move to a table in that was in a larger area and were told we couldn't even though there were empty tables during our entire meal. The waitstaff was very good. The food was very good. I had the special beef tips and mushroom ravioli and my husband had the flank steak. Nice portions, we brought some back to enjoy the next day. If the seating would be better, we would go back.

Our hotel and friends recommended the City Park Grill in Petoskey as a good steak and seafood restaurant for a special occasion. Prices and atmosphere are typical of a higher end restaurant so expectations coincide. However, amazingly, I must have had the misfortune of eating there on a bad night as even the waitress and manager agreed that the NY Strip Steak I ordered and sent back twice was not grilled to the temperature requested (Medium to Medium Rare). A $30 Steak dinner should be cooked to perfection and not overdone repeatedly. The manager and waitress did compensate with a free salad and eventually did not charge for the dinner as even they were embarrassed by the cook's inability to grill a steak properly. The Seafood (Whitefish) that my son ordered was great though. My personal advice - do not order steak from the City Park Grill...

Came for lunch and all meals were exceptional, knew the menu well and offered a good description of the local brews. We were with our 5 year old grandson and very accommodating. The ambiance was great and was a charming old fashioned type of place where groups of strangers started talking among tables.
This was my second time, with the first having a meal at the bar because of availability and both times food was exceptional

Interesting facility, varied menu, good food and service BUT the "music" was obnoxious and irritating. The employees are obviously playing what they like to hear but certainly NOT what the customers enjoy. It was noon-time lunch, and there were 40 clients eating, of which 10 were professionals and 30 were over the age of 60. Yet, the music was what an 18-22 year-old would want to drink and dance to at a night club in late evening. Also, the price of the "included" sides is deceptive: we were presented with our choices BUT when we received the bill there were $4.00 upgrade charges that were not disclosed. I deducted one star for the "music" and one for the "upcharges".

When our hotel told us their restaurant was closed (even though I’d been able to make reservations online), we were left scrambling for a place open late to have dinner. We arrived at City Park Grill after 8:30 (online maps showed they’re open until 10:00.) Host was friendly and our server (Morgan) was outstanding. Once seated, we overheard from another table the kitchen closes at 9:00, but Morgan assured us they were happy to serve us dinner. We had the excellent gumbo and great local beers. Loved the dining room—beautiful wood bar, interesting ceiling and walls. Highly recommend.

Upon arriving in the area, our first night held four excellent dinners - Jambalaya was flavorful with just the right amount of kick (will make without the shrimp), very generous portion. Mushroom ravioli with beef tips special was tasty and rich. Salmon over brussel spout salad and fish and chips - all great! Warning: Moscow Mule is made with their house made ginger beer and was sweet and unusual with little carbonation. Would definitely eat there again.

Nice restaurant in downtown Petoskey, MI Good menu with fish and steak. Good salads, and beginning dishes. Has old cast iron radiators throughout the restaurant which are pretty cool. Classic interior that is very open with a club house feel. Large bar. Very small outside seating in front on the street. Food was prepared well. Check your steak for how you like it cooked. Both we ordered were n the rare side after ordering medium but they were quick and happy to pop it back on the grill or broiler and make it right. Server were very attentive and management made a stop at the table to say hi. Your average price for a steak and seafood menu so you should be happy there. Would definitely return.

So, let me just say I have a gluten and dairy intolerance. The team here is amazing in making sure you are taken care of - the menu had multiple GF/DF and vegan options. When the manager Daniel, came to our table, he reenforced that yes, they can make me anything. We started with the GF Calamari. This was a delightful and refreshing. We had French Onion & Gumbo Soup (minus the rice- dairy) and both were delicious. Lastly, we ordered the Mediterranean Pasta and Steak. The only negative was the chicken in the pasta was a over cooked but the meal as a whole was absolutely wonderful. Barb was our server and payed attention to my “issue” and was great. It was nice to have a server that smiled with their eyes. The atmosphere is laid back and relaxing. We sat in the bar high top and were able to watch the bartender. He was very skilled at what he does and made time for everyone who sat at his bar. Lastly, I got a Awesome Coffee. They even have Dairy Free Bailey’s! This is definitely a must on your stop on Petoskey. The overall experience, was outstanding. This place has it down! Thank you Daniel and team! 🍁❤️

The female bartenders were more interested in eating and drinking among themselves. What kind of restaurant allows staff at prime time to order food from the menu and then sit down at a prime spot and eat their meal? No wonder the restaurant was 60% empty on a Friday night a week before Christmas. The wine list is very weak and on par with what I can buy at Walmart. I left after half a glass of wine.

City Park Grill is definitely a Petoskey landmark and a fantastic, casual, restaurant/bar.
Since this visit was during the pandemic, I can happily report that I felt comfortable with their precautions. Masks required upon entry (if you forget they have some to give), lots of hand sanitizer, tables spaced out and little to no common touch surfaces. Very clean, old fashioned, restaurant. Quite impressed!
Service was excellent and attentive and the food matched that. Steaks were well prepared as well as the fried whitefish.
Overall, an excellent, clean, restaurant-landmark with great food and service. Oh and Ernest Hemingway dined here before!

I was so excited to try this restaurant because of the great reviews. My elderly mom was visiting from Florida and wanted to spend the day in Petoskey. There were 3 of us on a Thursday evening. We had to wait about 15 minutes at the bar, which was fine, great and friendly bartender. We were seated and quickly attended to by our waitress. There was someone who brought around warm biscuits and butter while we waited for our drinks and looked at the menu. Our meals were pretty disappointing. We got 2 of the featured items. The meatloaf was dry, and had a taste like it had been grilled and the mashed potato serving was very small. The other meal was the sweet and sour meatballs with vegetable rice. This was the worst tasting meatballs ever! I'm not sure what the spice, flavor was but it was not pleasant. The other meal was just a burger and fries. Fries were cold and the burger was overcooked and nothing special. Maybe we just hit a bad night but I felt bad to even have picked this restaurant. Our waitress was prompt and courteous and was nice enough to take one meal off our bill. I hate to leave bad reviews but this just wasn't a good experience!

Annual pilgrimage to our favorite restaurant in Petoskey during the ski season. We have been coming for many years and I can honestly say that this was the worst meal I have experienced anywhere in the area. We had a reservation and were seated promptly, however service was extremely slow and complimentary biscuits did not arrive until after the salads were finished. My wife and I both ordered the NY Strip Steak entrée - one rare and one medium rare. Both were significantly overcooked and of poor quality meat. I had the truffle mashed potatoes that had sat so long on the stove they were like brown paste. My wife's baked potato was undercooked. We did not eat these entrees and the waitress was unresponsive. I asked for a manager and a woman identifying herself as "one of the managers" gave an employee discount of 20% off the two entrees - approx. $13 off $66 for two entrees. We literally had not eaten the meals. She also explained they were very busy between Christmas and New Years and unable to keep up. Our waitress immediately developed a nasty attitude and simply brought the bill and laid it on the table, walking away. No excuse for poor service on top of terrible food.

The food was fantastic and the service was excellent. Highly recommend the steak on a stick to start off and then the french onion soup. Our meals were a salad and the prime rib sandwich. The sandwich was perfect. Cocktails were well made. And don't skimp on the biscuits! We'll be back here in Dec.
Thanks for a nice meal and pleasant experience.

The metered parking everywhere in Petoskey really puts me off(It's just something I'm not used to even when traveling) but we made an exception for lunch.
Very quiet restaurant when we went. Only the table next to us was occupied. Servers seemed mostly happy to just socialize by the bar. Wasn't horrible service they were just happy to be elsewhere and distracted when they came by our table.
It's a really nice restaurant to admire visually. Clean and quaint. Got a lot of little touches that make it special.
Food was underwhelming for the price. The homemade chips were like munching on slices of rock. The entrees weren't bad, just unremarkable. This is actually the only meal we had while on the trip that I can't remember what we ate. I just remember both of us being meh when we were done and thinking we wouldn't come back. So wasn't bad, but definitely wasn't great.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Unfortunately we have no control over, or affiliation with the city's ability to meter parking. We are sorry that you felt it necessary to include that point in your review, though we understand you concern. We are also sorry that your experience with us wasn't more memorable and that your concerns about our waitstaff's other duties away from your table were problematic. Obviously our guests are our primary concern, but we also have a close knit staff, who enjoy working together. Like any work place, the ability to feel supported and accepted only aids in the primary focus of fulfilling the duties of service to the customer. We will take your concerns under serious advisement. Thanks again for sharing.

This place was recommended by friends but my wife and I were not impressed.
Obviously this is an old historic place and we were looking forward to soaking up the vintage ambiance. Sad to say, we were seated in a dingy back room that had all the charm of a cafeteria. I started off with a martini which was a skimpy pour and cost $9.
Then I had the French onion soup which was tasty but had more croutons than soup in it. My wife had the "steak on a stick" appetizer which was dry and I had whitefish on a bed of red cabbage and apple slices, not very tasty. We wouldn't consider a return visit.
