I Ordered the Suki Yaki Steak, and it did not disappoint. The portion size is huge, and it comes with vegetables, a small salad, miso soup, fried rice, and a small sample of shrimp. Our chef was very professional, and highly skilled. If the show is a big part of this for you, I suggest making a reservation, as the restaurant only has normal tables at busy times. Overall, a great place for a relatively nice dinner, but not over-the-top expensive.

We sat at the hibachi table, which was delicious with a great show. The chef was fun to watch, and super entertaining. My 7-month-old son was fascinated watching the flames.
We also ordered an appetizer and sushi roll to the table, as you can order anything from the menu when you sit there. I went with the teriyaki salmon, which was absolutely delicious. The meal comes with soup, salad, a shrimp appetizer and the entree--definitely your money's worth.
Everything was great and service was quick. My only complaint is that it's fairly loud in there, and it was at times difficult to talk.

The staff takes really good care of the customer. Each person is given exactly what they want to eat with a show to entertain your family. The Chiefs are really good with kids and the food is delicious 😋. Try the warm vodka for desert.

We went in wanting to do Hibatchi. We were told the next table was over one hour after our arrival. We chose to sit in the dining side. Unfortunately, I ordered the Samurai (steak and shrimp) which was misunderstood as Salmon :-( I had to wait for a remake and what I waited for was simply not worth it. Bland food is the best description I can give. Mistakes happen but the taste of the food was not acceptable.

We love coming here for date night, or for special occasions. It’s fun to watch the chefs prepare the food, with flair and flare, right in front of you. The service is good, and the food is excellent! As I stated, we always leave happy. My favorite is the shrimp hibachi, while my husband loves the hibachi special, a mix of steak, chicken and shrimp. Started with miso soup and a ginger salad, you will leave pleasantly full....and happy.

This is the older Ukai, near the Mall. Been here going on 40 years. The Good:
We were greeted warmly, and immediately seated at a grill table. Amy, our server, was gracious and efficient. Drinks were served, and we had time for conversation while they seated more patrons.
The quality of the food was proper based on the prices, it is really a good value. Amy's attentiveness continued throughout the meal.
What needs work.
Our Chef never introduced himself, and never engaged the patrons while grilling. No complaints about the end results, it's just that some interaction would be nice.
Ukai is not a High end Japanese restaurant, nor does it pretend to be. It is a place where you can try something different, and even bring the whole family. We like it.

This is a low end Benihana. It =reflects in the prices and the quality of food. It had similar menu items but every entre came with shrimp. The fried rice was very greasy.
Our griller did a nice job frying everything up, cracking the eggs, chopping the veggies, tossing the shrimp and making the onions volcano. It was entertaining. The quality of the meat and fish was just ok. The sushi was good-recommend as that comes from the sushi bar that is separate from the grill. Plates were all plastic. We ordered bottles of wine and they were screw top. All meals were under $20 before drinks and extras. There was young couple at the end of our grill that combed their hair toward the grill the entire time we ate.

Last weekend was spring graduation at Michigan State University, for which we had a reservation for a moderate-sized group. I called, making a reservation at the Ukai, 2-3 weeks before this past weekend, during which thousands of students were graduating. When making the reservation, we requested 6:30 p.m., but they offered us 7:00 p.m. instead. We took it, telling our party of the fun time we would have.
When we arrived shortly before 7 p.m., the hostess informed us there was no reservation for us, and insisted we made it at their other restaurant - which I didn't. [I didn't even know they had another establishment] We were upset, but said we would all drive there, only to learn they had no openings, either. We tried explaining and hoping she would honor our reservation, but she was very stubborn and rude, being very short with us, bad tone of voice, and nasty look on her face. She continued haranguing us that we made the reservation at the other restaurant [obviously not wanting to assume blame]. There was nothing we could do, and worse...how would we find another restaurant on a Saturday night with thousands of other families having their reservations, so that our children could have a nice dinner out to celebrate.
We were very disappointed, frustrated, and upset. We did find another Asian restaurant, which we were very fortunate accepted us, and where we did have a fun evening and delicious food. I can assure you that none of us in our party will ever return to Ukai again. Just terrible that they made no accommodation for their error, no less were intransigent, curt, and disagreeable.

We had no problems other than the wait after we were seated, as we had a reservation. The food was wonderful and the preparation at our table was amazing. Our only problem was they held having our chef prepare our food waiting to fill the table. Then after waiting half an hour after our salad, we were asked if they could seat a party of 5 with us. When we asked when we would see our food if we agreed, they told us we would have to wait for them to progress in their meal to our point. As soon as we disagreed, our food was prepared. They would have gotten a 5 if not for that. Best to make a reservation and ask to be seated at the grill if you want the full experience.

If you enjoy live cooking by the chef at your table then you should go here. Food was great but little pricey when the location is considered. Chef puts up a great show for you.

Been to this excellent restaurant many times. Always enjoy the ambiance and the very friendly helpful waiters. Food is typically tasty and often exciting to watch preparation. if you enjoy Japanese food, Ukai is worth a try.

Great food while you watch them cook it at your table.. they are talented!!! So fun for the family. Kids and adults love it. And the food rocks!! Can be expensive if you get lobster or something like that. We go here when we want to splurge. Totally worth it.

My boyfriend and I went here for a date, and it was my first time ever going to a hibachi restaurant. It was such a cool thing to experience and the food was amazing! It was fun watching the chef cook our meal right in front of us!
