Was nervous about going here because I don't like fancy food - you're paying a ton of money for less food that doesn't taste very good. Thankfully, that didn't turn out to be the case. Ton of money, yes, but so is everything else on the Island. The portions were good size and the walleye was great. We got a table right by the windows, so couldn't ask for a better view. The piano player made for good ambiance, but when he left (we could only get reservation near closing time) the music selections they played were poor. Cocktail choices were poor. Our server was a bit ditzy, didn't bring wife's sprite for a long time. The water was presented in a flask with no ice. Like having a flask, but don't really enjoy room temperature water. Plenty of wine choices, but that's not our preference. So fail on the drinks front overall. In summary, there were some above average aspects, but overall a pretty ordinary experience.

We are pleased to have exceeded your expectations by providing a tasteful and charming dining experience. Our culinary crew puts a great deal of care into meal preparation and presentation. Our pianist, John, has garnered quite a following over the years and is a special part of the Grill Room experience.

Start with the view. It is stunning looking out the window during the day for breakfast, and seeing the Tiffany chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and lit up at night. Breakfast on the hotel plan was well worth the extra charge since it was ordering from the menu. One night's dinner was amazing - excellent prime rib end cut, which I hadn't had for at least 40 years but was better than I remember. All the courses were great for my wife and I. And the dinner was enhanced by Fred's service, suggestions and conversation. And if Fred is unavailable, Ericka was also excellent.

The 1852 Grill Room was on my list of places to eat in Mackinac Island as the reviews were great. I hadn't made a reservation, but the manager had a table open and welcomed us. I recommend a reservation as I can see why so many people choose this popular restaurant. First, the food was delicious and well deserving of my 5 stars. I ordered the special steak au poivre well done. It takes a lot of talent to prepare a steak well done that isn't burned or overcooked. It had great flavor and was tender and well seasoned. My partner had the rainbow pecan crusted trout and it also was perfect. The vegetables on both our plates were very fresh, perfectly prepared and flavorful. This chef is masterful. Our entire meal was fabulous - one of the best I've ever had (and I am a world traveler). Second, the restaurant space was very nicely laid out, well lit and in perfect condition. The seating was creatively spaced with some intimate quarter round booths for 2 and other types of tables as well. We didn't feel crowded nor could we hear anyone's conversation. The piano player was so talented and played beautiful songs we loved and recognized and this added to the ambiance. We felt we were in a private concert hall. Be sure to leave him a tip in his jar on the piano. Finally, the management and wait staff were all attentive and professional, not missing anything. They ensured our meal and experience were memorable. So, well done 1852 Grill Room. The best of the best and deserving of 5 stars.

Part of our stay at the Island House included breakfast on the morning of departure. Hotel information stated breakfast is served "8:30 am-10:00 am;" we arrived to be seated at 9:00 am, but were told we didn't have a "reservation." Upon reviewing the hotel information sheet there was nothing that indicated a "reservation was required." We were offered 10:15 am seating which we accepted. At 9:45 am I visited the restaurant to learn if we might be seated early because the dining room was emptying. "Yes, come right in," was the response. The host allowed us to stand nearly 15 minutes before taking us to our table, while he moved about the room rearranging dishes on vacant tables. When he returned he directed us to a table by pointing to it. The rather cool greeting was a surprise. The fair was mixed. The waiter was welcoming. We were presented with a bill upon departure which confused me because we had pre-paid for the breakfast with our reservation; it was corrected immediately, but it was suggested we should have told our host that we had pre-paid. I guess I expected the seating routine should have included a question that involved our room number or whether we had a credit. Overall I thought the "lack or organization" was telling.

Coupled with also being understaffed due to the pandemic, this has been a challenging season for us. My wife and I went there tonight. We had a nice table outside overlooking the harbor. Waitress Anne highly recommended the prime rib which I ordered. 25 minutes later after we finished out appetizers (mussels were very good, burrata special salad was fair), she tells me they sold out of the prime rib. 25 minutes later..... No manager ever came over the apologize, no nothing. On exit I met John, the supposed “manager”....clueless. Had no idea what happened and had nothing to offer or say about the matter. He should be FIRED! Skip this place. If prime rib which they highly recommend and on their regular menu and cost $55 and they cannot let you know they are out when restaurant is maybe 40% full, then their ability to run a restaurant is highly questionable. Btw the wine list sucks.

We made reservations at the 1852 Grill looking forward to a great dining experience to celebrate our 40 year wedding anniversary and we’re disappointed. Here’s why. We were seated after a couple that had a later reservation than ours. They got the better table. Our service was slow with the waiter frequently apologizing for delays. We weren’t in a hurry so the delay wasn’t a big concern. We ordered a special bottle of wine and the steak tartare to start. The tartare came before the wine. The tartare was excellent. We then ordered our salad and entrees. The beet salad was way to big and very overdressed and we had to look hard for the beets among the greens. I didn’t even eat mine. We ordered the walleye and the duck breast for entrees. The vegetables were good. The walleye overcooked and the duck breast was not seared so the duck fat wasn’t fully rendered and ruined the dish. There was potential but we were disappointed.

We ate at 1852 on our last night on Mackinac Island. It was by far the worst (and *ONLY* negative) dining experience we had on the island. The food is wildly overpriced for the quality ($16 salad on par with Panera Bread). The dining experience, itself, was unpleasant - every last detail was just simply wrong. There was a dirty napkin from breakfast service sitting under our table when we arrived; drinks didn’t arrive with the food; white wines were not cold enough; soup crackers were thrown on the table at my husband; servers cleared plates while guests were still dining... I could go on. After throwing down $69 for a pasta dish, our server said we could only have bread for the broth if we paid $10 for the “bread appetizer.” (All other restaurants on the island simply provide bread for the table in a civilized manner...). We understand that COVID has been hard for restaurants (and perhaps 1852 is still working towards “getting back to normal”), but this restaurant should know that ALL of their competitors on the island are doing a spectacular job, *right now.* All in all - If you have a limited number of dinners to enjoy on the island (10 or less), this is not the place to go. It is a last resort.

We stayed at the Island House Hotel on July 14th and the morning of the 15th we went to the restaurant to eat. Let me say that upon checking into the hotel, nor at any other time, were we informed that you need a reservation at the restaurant. We went to the restaurant that morning and the hostess, a girl with long brown hair almost down to her waist, was extremely rude. She asked us if we had a reservation, which we did not. Then she sighed and huffed and made it quite obvious that she was extremely annoyed. It was explained that we were never told we needed a reservation, but that did not help the situation. She walked us to a table without saying a word and then stomped off. It was actually pretty ridiculous, her behavior. The other thing that was unfortunate was that the only breakfast available is $30 per person for a plate of food. Not a buffet…you order from the menu, but it’s $30 per person. The food was fine, but I guess if I’m paying $30 a plate I would like a little better service and maybe some kindness. Our waitress was great though, very sweet.

The food is always excellent. Service is very good, server was very friendly and pleasant (Jillian). We stay at Island House and always have at least one dinner here. It's never disappointing. It has become somewhat pricey (most of the Island is), and I'd suggest smaller portions and slightly lower prices. We just couldn't eat all the food we were served. But it was delicious!

During our stay at the Island House Hotel, we stopped in the 1852 Grill Room for a drink. The bartender, Ryan, was helpful and friendly, but genuine. He offered us food recommendations on the Island with his strongest being the 1852 Grill Room (which we expected, coming from the bartender in the restaurant). He was 100% dead on. Without a shadow of doubt, it was the best food on the Island, complete with excellent customer service and a beautiful view. With our stay coming at the end of season and an entire Island full of servers and bartenders ready for it to be over, the 1852 Grill Room rose above their collective exhaustion and provided an experience found nowhere else on the Island. Unbeknownst to us at the time, we happened upon the owners having a drink at the bar while we sat there as well. It was evident by their warm, welcoming conversation that this setting is unique on the Island. There's a reason reservations are strongly recommended by the staff and others. It's worth it.

The ambiance here was great. It was a beachy casual vibe with a live piano playing softly. Good mix of families and couples. Food was outstanding. I had the filet and a few drinks. If you like fish they have many. The wait staff was excellent. Very prompt and the food came out quickly. They gave us $30 gift cards at check in and we both used them at dinner so it lowered the price by $60 so that was great. Overall I would recommend 10/10.

We had a memorable experience at the 1852 Grill Room. The evening was special from beginning to end. Excellent crafted cocktails waiting for or table. Superb live piano music throughout. Varied menu. We chose veal medallions with morel mushroom Alfredo pasta and the steak Oscar (two of the evening's specials). The morel mushrooms were fresh and plentiful--a real treat and the steak Oscar was melt in your mouth tender. A decent wine list with very reasonable pricing added to the experience. The overall experience placed the 1852 Grill Room in our "top meals ever" category...a tough list to crack. We highly recommend it.

We had dinner here and quite enjoyed it. Once we were seated, it took a bit longer than we expected to be greeted by a server but then the service was great. Very helpful and friendly. We treated this as somewhat of a splurge so we started with a fried mushroom appetizers that we split. This was special that night, fried mushroom in aioli. We then had a cup of soup each, one being clam chowder and the other was mushroom. All three of these options were excellent with complex and balanced flavors. The main courses were both fish (trout and whitefish) and these were quite good as well. Not as world-class as the smaller plates but still delicious. We also had a bottle of wine. The wine list offered quite a good variety and various price levels. Overall, a very good experience.

My wife and 20 year old daughter stayed at the Island House 2 nights, and had breakfast twice and dinner once at the 1852 Grill Room. All 3 were great, experiences. We had the Duck Confit Flat Bread for an appetizer, and the Pecan Encrusted Rainbow Trout and Center Cut Filet Mignon for dinner. All were cooked perfectly, tasted great, and arrived quickly. The apple pie ala mode was fantastic as well. Nina served us for breakfast and Delaney for dinner - both ladies did a great job and seemed to like what they were doing. They were both friendly and talkative as well but not over the top COVID report: We had dinner inside and breakfast on the outside deck. In both cases guests were spaced well, the staff were always masked, and the usual precautions were followed as I expected like online menus, condiments not on the table unless requested, etc.

My wife and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary and the trip we booked was not possible due to COVID, so we booked a few nights on Mackinac Island. Our daughter and her husband were also celebrating their 30th anniversary and a few weeks before the trip we discovered that we booked several nights on Mackinac Island that overlapped. Once ther we connected and agreed to meet for dinner at 1852 Grill Room. We arrived for our reservation and were seated on the patio overlooking the harbor. We all enjoyed a fabulous meal and shared stories of our experiences from earlier on the trips we each scheduled. What a wonderful memory we have from our evening on the patio. Great food, great view, great company and wonderful service. We even had a freighter pass between Mackinac and Round Island in the setting sun. Don't skip the desserts. They were worth the extra calories. While this is a higher priced restaurant than some, it is well worth it for special occasions and events. If you plan a trip to Mackinac Island and want a special meal, we recommend the 1852 Grill Room.
