Went with a family group of nine so we had our own table and cook top with was nice. This is a dining experience…not just dinner. Our table side Japanese chef was a joy to watch as his knives and spatulas flew all over the place. Most of our party had the hibachi shrimp (which was deemed excellent) but I had the hibachi steak (strip steak) which was excellent…tender and cooked medium rare as I requested. Our meals came with our entree of choice plus miso soup, salad, a couple of shrimp, choice of rice and vegetables. So, a very complete meal. Service was great and we were not rushed through giving us time to enjoy our meal and visit. If you are looking for something a bit different and enjoy a bit of a show as well as a meal…we’ll, this is your place. We would all definitely return.

I’ve been to Ukai many time and I’ve never been disappointed. The one in Okemos was pretty far to go to but with the one on the West side is close enough to go as often as I like. I crave the Hibachi Shrimp with fried rice ❤️

Went here to the sushi bar. Had some Miso soup and s selection of sushi. The California maki was nothing like what i had before and the spicy poppers were definately not Japanese. These were obviously smothered in some kind of ssuce that would only please American taste. Not bad but not worth a second visit and not authentic Japanese.

Sadly, we came here for our anniversary. The best part was sitting outside in the perfect weather. The waitress was clearly overworked, but did a fine job. Our food was not amazing and took forever to come out. Needless to say, we will not be returning.

I watched the chef pour tons of soy sauce on top of the rice, veggies, and meat. All I could taste was the soy sauce. The Spider roll tasted like something you buy in the supermarket; very poor quality for what you pay.

I have been eating at UK for the past 20 some years even when I didn’t live in Lansing it is the most delicious food, the best service and the most welcoming atmosphere. We always have a great meal there the steak, shrimp, chicken is always cooked well and it just tastes tremendous!!! If I could give a 10 out of 10 stars I would.

Very unfortunate that this restaurant appears to believe they can be rude to customers without repercussions. I'm sure they are busy due to more people getting carry out and I'm sure my $30 to $50 orders mean very little, but laughing at someone placing an order while they are explaining an allergy is concerning. The allergy in question is a severe allergy of a small child and requires an epi-pen. The gentleman indicated they do not properly clean their cutting boards between orders when they are busy. Ukai has been our go-to sushi restaurant since lockdowns have started. I prefer Sansu and Maru. Looks like the extra drive is worth knowing my child's safety will be considered.

Stopped for an early dinner. We ordered the soft shell crab appetizer which was small but very good. My wife ordered the teriyaki chicken and I ordered the kazumi special. Our chef was very talented and we enjoyed watching him make our meals. Food was very good. They use a ton of soy sauce so if you're watching your sodium, this may not be for you. Otherwise a very good experience.

Always loved this place and still enjoy it, but not what it used to be. Still good quality Sashimi grade product but 'uninspiring' presentation and a little 'lite' on quantity. No extras, nothing special to shine on.

We had the Teriyaki steak with fried rice and veggies. All of us thought the food was wonderful, plus the service was great. Two of us had the plum wine which also was a nice complimentary drink.

Neat dining area that is large. I chose to dine in the sushi bar area. I tried the Godzirra roll based on a recommendation from the Uber driver who stated he loved sushi and that was his favorite at Ukai. The Godzirra roll is a shrimp tempura, tuna, salmon, avocado, cucumber, and asparagus topped with Siracha, spicy mayo, wasabi mayo, and eel sauce. It was a very good roll. The sushi comes with a soup (can’t remember what it was called) which I really enjoyed. I was hungry and asked the waiter about portions and his opinion. He recommended the spicy tuna poppers as they were on special and his favorite. The spicy tuna poppers where amazing! Great atmosphere, very good sushi, with excellent service.

I was a guest of a supplier and he took me and several of his staff to Ukai. It is a typical Japanese Hibachi restaurant. The service was pretty good and the beer was cold. The chef was very personable, but his entertainment skills were not on par with some of the best I have seen. The food, however, was spectacular. I ordered the Ukai Special, which consisted of steak, shrimp and chicken, along with vegetables and rice. The veggies were seasoned to perfection. Everything was delicious. The steak was tender and the chicken very flavorful. I thought the shrimp may have been a bit overcooked, but that had more to do with the entertainment (flipping bits of shrimp across the grill into a waiting patron's mouth...I didn't catch mine.) I rarely walk away from a restaurant meal stuffed, Ukai served ample portions. They also have sushi, which I did not order, but it looked very good. I highly recommend this place for a great meal.

This is a regular dinner spot for my husband and I. Tonight we visited with our child and all loved our meals. We had one hibachi (we usually sit in the sushi side but if they have room on a grill they’ll allow me to order hibachi). Great weeknight happy hour deals on drinks and sushi. Highly recommended!

We've gone several times over the years and have never been disappointed. I usually get the chirashi and my partner gets various specialty rolls. The fish is always fresh and well-chilled. They have more Americanized sushi rolls than authentic Japanese cuisine, but still there are enough traditional dishes to satisfy anybody. They are located right off the highway, which is convenient for me. Also A+ for cleanliness of the facility.
