We stopped here in the morning to pick up a picnic lunch on our way to the Porkies for the day. We bought sandwiches (which come with sides) and donuts. Everything was absolutely delicious! A great variety of bakery items and sandwiches, and appeared to be quite popular. Can sit outside on their picnic tables right on the river.

Best pasties ever. I grew up eating these in a Cornish community in Wisconsin and even though I tend to turn my nose up at the addition of rutabaga in the UP, these were among the best pasties I’ve ever had. Flavorful perfectly melded filling and butter crust - I normally use a sauce (chili sauce, ketchup, or sometimes Worcestershire), but these deserve to be enjoyed undressed.
I would encourage you to ignore the reviews from people who don’t like pasties or had never had them- that’d be like taking advice on breweries from a teetotaler… their opinion doesn’t matter.

In the Upper Midwest, there are destinations to which one returns over and over again ... Minnesota's Largest Candy Store, Betty's Pies ... and Roy's Pasties and Bakery. A few things to keep in mind: First, Roy's is open six days a week, 7 to 7. Second, the pasties are phenomenally popular, and tend to sell out before noon. We got there around 12:15 in midweek, and the traditional and turkey pasties were already gone. Happily, we were able to nosh on a couple of chicken and broccoli pasties, and will add a dozen of them to our fall foliage order (a dozen of each, if your please). So, the third point is to order in advance. Try and give them a full 48 hours heads up. And lest we forget ... Roy's also does pastries. The cream puffs are sinfully good, so light that there's little guilt attached to the calories. Now, walk across the road, settle in at one of the picnic tables, and enjoy the view while you eat!

The problem with Roy's is the complete chaos of it. The entrance, exit, order, display case, route to dining room is all the same small space. There is no indication of where the lines should form and what order things should happen in. It's clearly designed for one party at a time. With a customer base of mostly tourists, it becomes hard to get in the door and even to leave. With people mulling about all over, the staff can't keep track of what order people should be served in or who has/hasn't already ordered. Stopping by, you don't know if you'll have your food in 1 minute or will stand in line for 30 (this is all counter service, no wait staff). If you choose a bottled drink or pre-made bread, it's likely you'll need to ask other customers to move out of the way to get them (or even know they're there!) and those customers may not have any place to move TO.
The staff/service setup adds to the frustration. It's possible to go in at lunch time and there is only one person person behind the counter. They have to take orders, cook on the grill, pull things from the display cases, answer questions and run the cash register. Somebody just ordered some sandwiches? Sorry, you'll have to wait several minutes just to pay for something that's already cooked. Sometimes instead of taking orders at the register, you'll see a staff member helping customers in a random order from behind the counter. Now those customers are just waiting in line (to pay) with food instead of with their hands free and not necessarily in the order they came in.
I wonder if some barriers and signs would fix it?
As for the pasties, they are mushy and generally stuck to the grease-soaked bag, but decent on meat content and still better than what you find downstate. What Roy's has going for them is good hours and pasties every day, which is why you hear about them (plus everyone goes to Houghton, while not all will stroll through Laurium or Mohawk). Many of the best shops only serve them on certain days and only have breakfast & lunch hours. By noon they may be sold out. The thing to do is pick up one of the Pasty Trail flyers and go to any of the other places on it that's selling them today. If you strike out there, go to Roy's.

One lady is ahead of us in line. She ordered one sandwich. We ordered one sandwich. We waited for our sandwich for 15 minutes..the time is stamped on the receipt. The employee who was working on the books and leaning over the lunch counter decided to make our sandwich. We are now going on 20 minutes.
The manager walks by and asked if there was a problem .. not if i needed help. I said that we ordered that sandwich almost 20 minutes ago and the bookkeeper /short order cook is only working on it now. The very smug manager told us to please have a seat. She was obviously uncomfortable that she was on the spot. A wise manager would have known to apologize for the delay. Day one training at smug manager school is obviously be rude to customers when they have a legitimate concern. Instead we had the excuse that they had worked hard over the lunch hour and the employees were fairly new ...the skill we are talking about is making a sandwich.
When we finally got said sandwich she apologized to the cook for my saying it took too long.
Yo Roy....pay more for good people.

I felt like my order was thrown at me, very overwhelming not a good experience. This was my first time having a pasty so I was not sure what to expect, I order a chicken broccoli cheese pasty and a a traditional which was meat and root vegetables. I opened the bag and the chicken pasty was mushy soggy crust, the meat pasty crust was a bit better as it was flaky. They should have let the pasty totally cool down before wrapping it in a waxed paper bag, will never go back

I went to this place because Google trumpeted that it was "an Authentic Finnish Bakery!" It's in a charming part of Houghton right up against the canaI. On a fall day, the sidewalk next to the water was full of tourists and leaf peepers. The location is great and the bakery is attractively decorated and immaculately clean. There are tables inside the shop where you can sit and linger over coffee and a snack. I went on a Monday morning, admittedly not the best time in the week to go to a bakery. There were three lonely looking loaves of Nisu bread (all that was left after brisk weekend sales?), one of which I bought. When I asked the clerk which of the baked goods were Finnish, she shrugged and said: "the Nisu bread, and you've already got that." Then she turned to her colleague and asked her: "Do you know if any of these baked goods are Finnish-style?" The colleague replied in the negative, then suggested that I go to "the Finnish bakery" across the bridge in Hancock! I was quite touched and a bit flabbergasted that she recommended a competitor, but maybe it was because they weren't actually in competition? On the upside, if you're looking for standard cookies, doughnuts and baked goods, they seem to have a good selection. My negative review doesn't mean to imply that the products they actually sell are in any way inferior; they look great and the doughnut that I bought was fresh and tasty. But Finnish they're not, and that's by their own reckoning.

At the same price (everybody in UP charged around $6.50), its traditional beef pasty is full of meat and really filling. Definitely better than other places I tried during the trip in separate reviews.
I like the way they seasoned the meat with seasoning (but some do not like this way). It is a bit different from a traditional Cornish pasty but hey even in the UK, there are places selling pasty with Indian chicken curry inside. But turkey pasty is the best and is a must try.
I also sampled some scones, tarts and chocolate brownie like bars and all good.

Our favorite place for pasties was closed, so searching on line I found Roy’s. Living in Arizona, we don’t have a great place for pasties, so we look forward to eating a few when visiting the UP. Roy’s did not disappoint, the 16oz original pasty is a good meal along with a liberal amount of Heinz ketchup. Ordered 10 for the family, and the locals agreed on the good taste. Comparisons were made to their homemade pasties, but for convenience, getting a bagful to go was perfect. Roy’s also has quite a few bakery items that looked and smelled delicious, but I avoided the temptation this time. Next trip I’ll add cookies to my bill. Right on the Portage, plenty of parking. Will definitely return.

Roy's makes the most incredible pasties. We tried the traditional and the turkey and they were both amazing. Thin flaky crust, LOTS of filling which was absolutely delicious in both types, filled with meat, vegetables. Not dry, hung together well, extremely filling. Every bite was incredible.

It was obvious by how busy they were that this was a happening place! The view from outside can’t be beat. Very strong recommendations from friends — the pasties and baked goods lived up to the hype. Wish it were closer to where we live because we want more.

Roy’s never disappoints. We have gone there numerous times and everything is always scrumptious. Staff is good - The employee with the long blonde hair and glasses never fails to make me feel welcomed! There Cronuts and Pecan Bars are my favorite thing :’)

The pasties (especially the Pizza one) are amazing. My wife said the bagels (asiago/jalapeno) were some of the best she has ever had. And the cookies and cream donut was over the top great!
My only regret is that I didn't stop in sooner. And I wish they were open on Sundays!

We stopped for lunch and tried one turkey and one meat pastie. The crust was excellent, the best we have experienced in all of the UP of Michigan. These were huge and delicious. So large that we only had snacks of dinnner later that day.
