Visited over one year ago and plan on returning soon. The food preparation was excellent as was the ambiance. American menu. Priced on the high side, but worth the cost. Reservations recommended weeks in advance, as this is one very popular place in Harbor Springs.

We have had dinner several times and the food has been pretty good. The dish that is consistently skimpy is the linguine dish. It could be terrific but skimpy on the tomatoes, spinach and linguine. Tonight the fish was scallops sometimes it’s shrimp. Flavorful but skimpy. The couq ou vin was flavorful, a chicken breast with mashed potatoes in a mushroom wine sauce again just felt skimpy could have used more mushrooms and plated with a green vegetable ie green beans. Waiters are attentive. This restaurant could be great if they stepped up and were a bit more generous on their portions.

The New York Restaurant, which has been a Harbor Springs landmark for decades, is a rare restaurant. It is consistently positive, in service, menu selection, wine list, and tastiness. One indication of its excellence is that fact that members of its wait staff have worked there, not for weeks or months, but for decades.

Went here on recommendation of friends who live in the area. Menu was ok, nice selection, good wine list, not very expensive. Positives stop there. The server was an officious self important jerk who didn’t have a clue that he worked in the hospitality industry. We ordered the house wedge salad, I love a good wedge. It turned out to be a slightly wilted chopped Romain salad with a watery blue cheese dressing, a couple of green cherry tomatoes and some bacon bits so hard it was difficult to chew them. We waited a half hour between salad and main course without seeing our server and without explanation or apology. The steak was slightly dry without much flavor. The augratine potatoes were rubbery and cold, the broccoli was dry without the slightest hint of seasoning or butter. All during this travesty masquerading as a meal, our server deemed it beneath him to pour our wine. I usually tip 20%, 25% for very good service. I planned to give the jerk 10%, well above what he deserved but was foiled by an automated check machine that allowed only 15% or 20%. What a way to hold up the client and force a tip that was undeserved. For a great meal go to Chandler’s, or go to the local Subway sandwich shop. Stay away from this mediocre disaster.

My husband and I had terrible dinners at the New York Restaurant on Wednesday Sept. 16 at 5:00pm.
The mussels were inexcusably small. The cost was $10.00. The manager said she cannot control her suppliers shipments. Well, she accepted them and evidently felt it was fair for us to pay for them. This was unacceptable!
My husbands Filet Mignon was so thin and overcooked. Without measuring, we are guessing it was less than a quarter inch thick. Cost over $35.00! Manager again claims that was a fair deal.
My red snapper consisted of 4 thin strips about 3" long if that and they were so spicy hot I could not eat any of it. None! Cost was over $30.00 They were not listed as being spicy or hot on the menu. Once again, the manager was useless.
This restaurant was supposed to be a high end fine dining place. We traveled from Illinois on vacation, saving one evening of our trip to treat ourselves to this dinner.
Fine dining? They lied. This place is a scam. A disgrace and diservice to their customers. They have by far the lowest quality of food that we have ever had in over 60 years.
We should have walked out after the tiny mussels were brought to us. That was the first red flag.
Nice dishes, napkins, candles and atmosphere can only do so much. Quality food is a mistaken assumption here.
We went to bed hungry. $90.00 meal and we went back to the hotel hungry. I ate cheese sticks and an apple at the hotel.
Looking forward to getting back to Illinois. They serve real food there.
I tried to post other pictures but it would not let me.

Went to the New York on the strong recommendation of friends. Was told wait would be about 30 minutes. After 45 minutes was told table would be ready shortly. Then several minutes later the hostess informed us they would not be able to seat us at all that evening because “a table that had been there since five would not leave”. Hostess was not unpleasant but basically unapologetic and the staff obviously is not competent handling flow. I asked when we walked in if they would be able to seat us and was told “yes”. This left us scrambling to find another place to eat at 8:45 on a Friday, which in Harbor Springs is not easy to do. From the looks of it The New York appears to defer to locals and screw the visitors. Will never go back. Avoid this place

We were seated for a 5:30 reservation. Since the restaurant opened at 5:00, the restaurant was relatively empty. We waited for our food as we watched the restaurant filled up. Apparently they lost our ticket and served everyone else in the restaurant but us. The food finally came out at 7:00. This restaurant appears to be highly under staffed and over priced.
I did not find one redeeming quality with this experience.

We went here for Saturday dinner on a recommendation from our friends. As we had a reservation, the five of us were promptly seated in a corner booth. The restaurant decor is somewhat traditional and 'country club-ish', which we all appreciated. However, after our server's initial visit, she seemed to nearly all but disappear, with long spurts of time between courses. Admittedly, my arugula salad was splendid as was a particularly spicy crab cake appetizer. My husband, on the other hand, felt his soup was rather bland and the salad more of a shredding than a wedge. Obviously, the restaurant is quite popular as it was full of loud patrons, both couples and large family groups.

We have enjoyed The New York over time, but our last visit was disappointing. The whitefish meal consisted of a single piece of whitefish and a plate of mixed beans that seemed to be out of a can. It was nice to see the restaurant busy, but we won't be visiting until the food improves, especially given the rise in pricing (Over $30 for ribs). The best thing on the menu is still the Northern Fried Chicken.

While our waiter Bobby was a sweet Buzz Lightyear, sadly his associates let him down 100% . The food was far from exceptional. Two steak meals had to be returned as they weren’t cooked as ordered. We were told it would take 6 minutes…and that was a lie. 15 minutes…that was the truth.
Four friends came together to enjoy a meal and had to eat at different times. Not a great experience at all.
The Wedge salad had no bacon in it and 1/4 the size of normal. The pork chop dinner was beyond charred and the broccolini was barely cooked with zero flavour. We had to request bread twice. We were bombarded by flies and had to kill one against the window. Bobby did wipe it off the window for us, so that was nice.
The Mushroom Bolognese was delicious and the least expensive of all the entrees. Would recommend it. HOWEVER…..There were several other issues and we finally felt it necessary to speak to the manager.
In total we spent over $400 and despite our concerns and obvious disappointment , we received a “deer in the headlights “ look from the manager who generously took $3.77 off our bill. ( 1/4 of the cost of the Wedge Salad).
While I’m sure ours may be an exception to the norm for other patrons of The New York, I won’t be back. Will I be back to Harbor Springs??? Absolutely!!
Next stop Vernales !!

Our server, Rudy, started out gangbusters, he was knowledgeable and friendly. Until we asked questions & he was annoyed. We ordered a filet, which was puny looking but was perfectly cooked, the lamb shank was fall off the bone good. The scampi was OK, the chicken, a different recipe than before was good but disappointing with the side of wilted veggies. The white fish was horrible. But…when Rudy was told he didn’t want to hear about it. We did order dessert but Rudy was done with us and we were done with his phony camaraderie. However, Sophia made sure not one water glass was ever empty. She was a delight. All in all it was not the usual experience we’re used to at The New York.

This well-established restaurant in downtown Harbor Springs never disappoints. Excellent cuisine, fine wine list, professional wait staff. The restaurant is open 5 evenings a week. Reservations are strongly suggested.

Hadn't been to the New York for several years and was looking forward to dining there with my wife. The ambience of the restaurant had not changed, but the service level had greatly deteriorated. After we were seated, it took at least 15 minutes for our server to come to our table even though the restaurant wasn't very busy. We ordered a bottle of wine and then waited another 10 minutes or so for the wine to be brought to our table. I ordered the crab legs and asked our server to make sure the drawn butter was hot when the crab legs were served. And I ordered the Potatoes Au Grautin and Brussel Sprouts as my sides. She quickly brought out the butter in a warmer but the butter was at room temperature with a tiny flame under it that would never be able to heat the butter in a timely fashion. When she brought my dinner to the table, the butter was barely warm. I asked her to get be a new butter that had been properly heated. After several minutes she returned with a ramkin of butter that was still barely warm. It took me another 5 or so minutes before I could get her attention. By then I had eaten about half of the crab legs. She finally went to the kitchen and returned with hot butter. To make my dinner even worse, my potatoes were too hard to eat and the Brussel Sprouts were barely cooked. One of my worst dining experiences in recent memory. There are too many great restaurants in the Petoskey / Harbor Springs area to waste an evening at the New York.

This was our first time visiting the area and this restaurant. The room was quite crowded and a little noisy but very friendly wait staff and service was prompt. We were very happy with our meals. Our table enjoyed beef filet, lamb and veal. The veal was excellent! I would recommend trying this place and do not think you will be disappointed.

Made the reservation a week ago and noted my wife was gluten free. If they were unable to accommodate this, I wish they would’ve contacted me. Nothing on menu noted gluten free and zero dessert options. It was Mother’s Day, a special day.
The waiter was severely untrained on gluten/wheat allergies. My wife ordered the wedge salad. The waiter told her the “dressing has a little gluten in it. We’ll just put it on the side so we aren’t forcing you to have it”. WHAT?? When you have celiac or a gluten allergy you don’t eat gluten — none. It’s a serious allergy. That didn’t make any sense. And then he didn’t offer ME bread because my wife has a gluten allergy. Extremely unprofessional.
(And, someone should be doing a uniform check now and then. His zipper was down during our entire dinner)
Our steaks were very good and the only reason for the 2 stars instead of 1. Very disappointed in the lack of professionalism and sensitivity to allergies based on the advertised gluten free menu options
