Called at 1:30 pm to ask if they were open for Hibachi. Was told they started serving Hibachi at 4:30. Asked if reservations were needed. I was told No reservations needed by a female. Arrived at 4:32 pm and was told they were booked until...8 pm by the host. Explained what happened. He claimed we didn’t call the right place. Pulled out my phone, reviewed my recent call list and provided the phone number to this restaurant and specifically what time I called. He left and came back with another person who was not helpful either and blamed “the virus” instead of taking responsibility for the inaccurate information provided by his staff. Drove 45 mins. Won’t be back. Went to a competitor and had a great meal and have provided an accurate review of that establishment. Don’t waste your time. They have ZERO customer service here.More

The restaurant is split between a Japanese hibachi side and a Chinese food side. My wife and I went to the Japanese side as we had never experienced that type of cuisine before. The staff was very friendly and the chef put on the expected...show (including flipping food into my wife's mouth and a few jokes/surprises along the way). It was entertaining (we gave him a nice tip). The food was very yummy (got the filet hibachi) and we would certainly go again when in town next (traveled there for business). There was a small Koi pond inside as well (in case you enjoy watching the fishes). I recommend you go.More

Shanghai Ichiban Chinese Restaurant is a great place for fresh Chinese food. A wide variety of dishes and you can create your own dish - protein, sauce, vegetables and rice or noodles. Not too spicy but watch the red hot peppers. The Canyon Road Cabernet...is a great red wine with a nice finish. We chose Pot Stickers for an appetizer and Orange Beef and General Chicken for entrees with fried rice. Large portions. Plenty to eat and take home the rest. Very good service.More

We stop here often since it is conveniently located near where we run errands and shop. First time I have gotten around to doing a review but felt obligated as we are always treated really well with friendly and prompt service and well executed food....We never do the teppanyaki thing (the "show" where they cook in front of you) and instead choose to order off the menu and sit in the more comfortable dining room or belly up to the bar. Our go-to's: sushi & sashimi, tempura and the lunch menu The sushi and sashimi is always impeccably fresh and the slices of fish are always generous. They also often have Uni, one of my personal favorites that many other sushi bars don't offer. They also garnish the unagi with toasted sesame seeds and scallion, which is the important, finishing touch for my favorite nigiri that many other sushi joints skip. The shrimp and vegetable tempura appetizer is a great value at $7, with two large, loooong (how do they do that?) shrimp, broccoli, sweet potato, zucchini, mushroom, etc. all lightly fried in a very crisp and light batter that is never greasy. The lunch menu is an absurd bargain with an egg roll, crab rangoon, fried rice and choice of entree included for one very low price (I forget exactly, but trust me). On this visit we got the orange flavor beef and szechuan shrimp & vegetables. The orange beef was amazingly tender and though the sauce was a little overly sweet, we practically licked the plate clean it was so delicious. Same for the shrimp dish, which was once again generous with the amount of plump, tender, perfectly cooked shrimp. There are plenty of decent and maybe "americanized" chinese joints in town, this being one of them, but here they really execute at a high level time and again. Very reliable, great service, in a slightly more upscale atmosphere and the food is always on-point. A solid choice in this part of GR.More

I honestly don't know what else to say other than I love this place. The food is always excellent, it's a fun environment, and the staff is friendly. The price point is somewhere between mid-range and fine-dining. I have found that it is always worth...it. The Japanese Hibachi side is the phenomenal and never fails to impress the people that I take. If going to the Hibachi side plan to eat about 30 to 45 minutes after your reservation time. They cook everything in front of you and it's always fun to watch. 5 stars every single time. I've only eaten at the Chinese side once and though it was good, it didn't 'wow' me the way the Hibachi side always does. The Chinese side I would rate 4 stars.More

I don't normally review a place that I only got take out in, because part of my review grade includes service and atmosphere. However this place was enough for me to need to review it. I ordered Crab Rangoons and General Tso Chicken. I can...say this about both of them, they tasted odd in different ways. The Rangoons tasted like rangoons just with a weird taste. The General Tso did not taste like any General Tso I've had before. It was not good at all. Plus the chicken quantity was lacking. Overall a 2 star review. The only thing saving it from 1 star is benefit of the doubt since I didn't eat there. Would I order from there again? Never!More

KILLER EGG ROLLS all handmade. And delicious. Best around. Everything else is just ok. Overpriced. And the chefs are all kind of weird.

We ate on the "Chinese" side. We wanted a quiet place to sit and have a good conversation with the four of us, and the setting was excellent for that. The food was good, including Happy Family, and Moo Shu Pork. But they brought out...one entree and rice, then brought out two more about 5 minutes later. One of those was Happy Family, which was fun to watch in table-side preparation because it includes fire, but strangely it was prepared at a different table, then brought to us. After several more minutes I had to ask when my Moo Shu Pork would be coming. Then they finally brought it out. We wanted a leisurely dinner, and this was a good setting for that, but it would have been better if we had received all four entrees at about the same time.More

Went here on a Sunday with my wife. The place was empty as they had just opened. We were seated and drinks taken fast. The chef who performed was new to Shanghai Ichiban but nevertheless he made our meal amazing with his flying food tricks...onion volcanoes. I would definitely recommend. By the time we left the place was starting to get full.More

Down in the area visiting daughter at GVSU and she wanted some Chinese cuisine. Numerous stops to see "Closed on Sunday" signs before arriving here. Glad the others were closed or we would never have found this place. Great meals and when I got the...bill was surprised at how low the overall amount was to feed my family of five. Definitely will be back again!More
