When in Detroit, you MUST visit Lafayette Coney Island. The menu is simple: coney dogs, loose burgers, french fries, chili, soda pop. A very unpretentious diner location, but the food is delicious. I have been coming here for over 50 years. The waiters call out your order. It is fun just to watch the non-stop activity.

Stopped for lunch on a Friday as my first stop of the coney challenge with the place next door. Service was fast and friendly. The coney is a sloppy, knife and fork type. Coney sauce is well spiced and tasty. The dog is tasty and has a snap. Love the old time ambience of the place. Damn good coney.

Living in Brooklyn, NY and never having heard of a coney dog, we were intrigued to try the Coney dog from Lafayette Coney Island as well as the place next door. We both agreed that Lafayette had the better dog. The chili had more flavor, the mustard was not overpowering and the bun was not too soft. Definitely the winner for best coney dog!

My boyfriend and I went to check this place out. The customer service was very poor. We were not greeted and the servers and cooks were giving out food with dirty hands. Chili dogs were very mediocre and we paid $7 for them. So in other words, meh.

I hope I don't offend their loyal customers and I know Lafayette Coney Island is a legendary landmark but it didn't do it for me. My expectation was very high as one of my best friends who was born in Detroit raved about the Lafayette Coney Island dogs. I guess maybe because I didn't grow up eating them. Sadly, I had to share my disappointment with my friend.

Wanting to experience a Detroit Coney we ended up in this place. It was filthy. The workers were friendly for the most part except for our waiter. Very impatient and abrupt. As for the food...I have had better. Heck, I could make better. Would suggest travelers looking for a Detroit Coney experience keep looking.

Rather than being delicious, it feels like the taste of an American's hometown. I went because it had good reviews on TripAsvisor. However, the service was very cold and not so great. The bread was soft and the chili sauce made it melt. The chili sauce was light, while the sausage was salty. There was no harmony in the flavors, but I think it was a nostalgic taste that had been around for a long time. I was told that one was not enough, so I ordered two, but I should have just stuck with one. I never thought it was delicious.

My family is from Michigan so I grew up with coney island dogs and loose burgers; this is a must stop every time I am in the area. My girlfriend from Florida, who had never even heard of a coney dog or loose burger, was a little shocked by the whole experience. Nonetheless, she loved the food.

Overall I would say the hot dog is the star of the show and is worth eating. It was a very good hot dog, and you should get it with all the works. That's the way it is meant to be had. The fries were okay, and the service isn't the best. You don't have to spend a lot of time here, you can swing in for the dog and move right along.

Everyone should visit National Coney Island at least once in their life. Have a coney with mustard and onion ONLY! Once you have done it, you're a Detroiter, sorta. Seriously, National Coney Island is as iconic of a place as there is when it comes to Detroit. It's much more than a hotdog with chili - it's a rite of passage. Do it!

Kind of like a hole in the wall with simple but fantastic hot dogs. We ordered a couple of Coney Island dogs with cheese fries. The dogs were cooked perfectly and tasted great. The cheese fries were good as well. It's a cheap place to eat with friendly service.

We visited expecting great things from a place rated very highly on TA. We were very disappointed. The place is a dive. It is filthy and shabby. The workers wear filthy stained shirts. There are flies circling the pies in the glass enclosure. They serve hot dogs and the hot dogs are not that great. What is the attraction here?

On the way to the ballgame, we decided to make it a complete downtown event. Lafayette is a downtown establishment. It doesn't make the splash or have the notoriety of its next door neighbor, (American Coney Island) but the food and atmosphere is oldtown Detroit. Great dependable coney dogs any day or night. A fabulous last call food spot. Make the trip and taste the history.

There is an interesting environment here. We were a little confused on how to order, but once we figured it out, we were glad we stopped by. The1 food was delicious. You have to try the chili dog with the onions and mustard. It sounds odd but its fantastic.

I started work in Detroit at Garan, Lucow on Jefferson; the staff had their favorites; Ham Heaven, Sindbad's, Lafayette Coney Island...fond memories. It's not changed since 1971; I love it; I just sit and watch the back door and front door and all who come in and out. I spent 2-hours, went through chili, coney, and fries (hey, it was over 2-hours).
