We have dined few times in this amazing restaurant… Always it is a FIRST CLASS experience. The building is an historic building with beautiful architecture and hand carved woodwork that is an amazing craftsmanship from the 18 hundred. Each room as it’s own unique design...and decoration. The food is really fantastic, great selection of dishes. The service is high standards!! There is a valet parking. Beautiful garden around the building. A great place for celebrating any special occasion.More

I've been wanting to try this place for over 30 years. We came here for dinner prior to a evening show at DSO. Convienent to park at DSO and walk to The Whitney. We first walked the outside grounds. There is a nice small garden....There was no seating outside on this day. When you first enter, that huge staircase just hits you. The 3 floors is a must to explore after dinner. They even offer free tours. The 3rd floor is a huge bar with multiple seating rooms. As for the meal, we did do the pre-show 2 course meal. The salad may have been the best part of the meal. I had the petite steak while my wife had the salmon. Both were very good. There is also a 3 course meal in the full menu by adding $27 to the entree. The service was excellent. Overall, a very nice dinner experience. Perfect location to DSO.More

A wonderful meal in a historic atmosphere. The waitress was outstanding in service, explanation and accommodation. One of the best I have had. Of special note, is that she had been on the job ever since the early morning in that this was Easter and...she had worked the brunch. Not once did she refuse a request and even went out of her way to explain the ingredients such as the beet broth surrounding my excellent sea bass. After dinner drinks were served on the 4th floor of this 100 year old home. The whole experience was Detroit at its finest.More

We had a reservation for 5:30 p.m. for a party of 4 on 03-28-2024. We gave advance notice of a birthday. We had plans to attend the symphony following dinner. It was a delightful experience: my husband and I arrived early and the restaurant cheerfully...seated us right away. My daughter and her husband arrived a few minutes later. Our server, Keitha, confirmed which person's birthday we were celebrating and explained the pre-concert dinner (2 courses) as opposed to regular dinner (4 courses). We all agreed the pre-concert dinner was the best choice for us. The kids had caesar salads and we had wonderful lobster bisque. There were a half dozen different dinner choices. My daughter loved the risotto (she ordered scallops to top it); my husband and son-in-law both had filets (prepared perfectly), and I greatly enjoyed the salmon. Although we didn't order dessert, they brought sorbet for my son-in-law (the birthday boy). We were out of there in plenty of time to walk the 4 blocks to Max M. Fisher Music Center. My kids parked across the street from the restaurant; we parked at the Parsons garage near the symphony. We enjoyed the restaurant, the great food and service, and the pianist at The Whitney.More

Never had visited The Whitney before I was excited to finally get to go . I was disappointed and won’t ever go back . The building is definitely worth seeing , but the food was only marginal . Portion sizes were very small for what...you are paying. Our server never did bring me the extra sauce for the beef Wellington . The presentation on the seafood dish was lackluster , small and overall boring . We returned after the play for some cocktails and upon arriving in the upstairs bar it was quite obvious from the waiter did not want us there , even though there were still other people present . He was extremely rude - not the kind of service I’d expect in a supposedly upscale restaurant. Glad I went once , but definitely won’t be back .More

Underwhelming. The place is very worn. I understand old and historic, which is awesome, but everyone at our table was afraid they were going to fall through their chair, the table wobbled so badly our drinks were spilling out of our glasses when cutting our...food. No elbows on the table here! Food would slide into your lap. We asked the waiter if there there was something he could do and he tried wadding up a napkin and stuffing it under the table - - which made it worse, so he just walked away from the situation. Pianist looked something that arose from a coffin and was banging on the thing - - so so so loud!!!! Very unsettling. Christmas decor was up and most of the poinsettias were dead and leafless! The rest of the decor looked like stuff from my grandmas attic with smashed bows and fake stiff green garland and velvet sparkly fake flowers. Crumbs on the floor around my chair - not made by me! The food was okay at best. The Lemon cake was wonderful. Portions are small. Overall, not worth the money, too many WONDERFUL restaurants now in the city! Too bad, cool mansion. Electrical work by Thomas Edison. That was probably the best thing about being there!More

The first but not last visit to this historic venue. A perfectly executed experience and meal .Starting with global class service from the ladies verifying our reservation at the entrance ,the floor greater and maitre d'. Elegant, appropriate and sincere. The ghost bar bartender who...was knowledgeable, and helpful who made a flawless cosmopolitan. Once seated our server gave us an historical overview of the mansion and builder. This was not a memorized rendering but a sincere and true caring of the historical facts delivered so lovingly .Our meal was flawless from the perfectly fried calamari, the magnificently seasoned seafood saut'e, and the perfectly cooked osso buco. All delivered by a sever with impeccable timing and delivery .All of this delivered on Halloween night were our expectations were lower assuming a busy night. We were wrong and so magnificently surprised and thoroughly delighted. A perfect experience encapsulated in a very unique and magnificently maintained historic mansion with so many unique and fascinating decors and unique pieces.More

We recently took visiting family to the Whitney to have dessert and drinks at the Ghostbar on a weekday evening. They were interested in this historic house and wanted to see its beautiful interior. Having dessert and drinks in the Ghostbar was a perfect way...to see the house. The only drawback was there were three desserts on the menu; we ordered, and then were told that none of them were available, so we all took the replacement dessert, which was satisfactory. I ordered a coffee, but it was hardly warm, and even the warmup wasn't very hot. Those who ordered drinks enjoyed them. The bartender was friendly and attentive. In addition, there was a docent leading guests on a post-dinner tour so we were able to hear some of the facts about the house and its furnishings. And a manager stopped by to share more history of David Whitney and the house. Awesome stained glass windows and lighting fixtures designed by Tiffany. Beautiful fireplaces and ceilings. You can't go wrong stopping in for dessert and drinks!!More

5/5 Spectacular! Our new Christmas Eve tradition. Our server, Chris, was the best. She was so pleasant, attentive and welcoming. We sat on the third floor in one of the Whitney’s guest bedrooms. It was a stunning setting. The food was beautifully presented and delicious...! We started with an appetizer plate which included intertwined shrimp in a delicious sauce, heirloom tomato’s on a cucumber chip and a beef crostini with horseradish sauce. After that we had the winter blues salad with toasted sesame dressing. Yum! Then got our main we had the iconic Beef Wellington which was cooked to perfection. For dessert my husband had the raspberry sorbet and I had the decadent key lime pie. It was all fantastic!!!More

Stopped by The Whitney at 7:45 on Sunday night. After paying $10 for valet, we asked to have cocktails at the bar. We were told the bar was filled with a Christmas party. We were told to leave and get refunded from the valet. After...questioning further, the bar was suddenly open. We went up two flights of stairs and low and behold, it was empty. We were the only people in the bar. Not sure where the patrons from the Christmas party went. In all fairness, the bartender wanted to close at 7:30. Not sure why you would turn paying customers away. Just tell us that. Don’t tell us a lie. A big disappointment. I will never return, and I will never recommend this place to anyone i know. Just be honest. It will get you everywhere.More
