Our favorite. A must-visit for our guests and family The friendly staff and excellent chefs at Kitchen Proper make dining out a pleasure!! Pasta dishes are a favorite. The nightly special menu introduces new flavors and preparations. The fish specials are always ... Special! and...tasty. Watch for the Ancient Grains as a carb on some meals ... excellent! Save room for the terrific deserts, including Gelato.More

We made a happy and delicious discovery at Kitchen Proper after a 45 minute wait at another local restaurant sent us looking for something local, and quick. Even though we didn't have a reservation, we were seated quickly by the smiling and friendly hostess. They...said the menu changes to utilize local products and we found wonderful, creative meals listed. First off, this is locally owned by a husband and wife team who were there that night cooking, serving and greeting customers. Secondly, EVERYTHING that we ordered was delicious, with large portions and reasonable prices. I love food, I love to cook and I'm hard to impress when it comes to restaurants. I. WAS. IMPRESSED. WITH. EVERYTHING. WE. ATE! I can't wait to visit Kitchen Proper again on my next visit to Battle Creek.More

Well done, really nice service, great dish, delicious, tasted, and quite nice place to have a dinner with friends. The Salmon from Alaska with polenta, Asparagus was fantastic. I really recommend it.

Fantastic food. Watch out for the specials! I went twice while visiting the area because of the food and cocktails. The waygu medallions were tender and fixed to my liking and well paired with the Pinot I drank. The special I had, the Austrian trout,...was absolutely delicious and the whipped goat cheese with apples with homemade pita chips to die for. I also liked the setting and service was outstanding: they recognized me and greeted me even though I had been there once and a week prior. They are attentive, friendly and very accommodating to my request s. It’s the place to go in downtown Battle Creek.More

One thing: the food was fantastic. We all decided on pasta dishes and we all found them wonderful. Everyone would go back. Two things: the service was fantastic. Jenny did great! Good food and good service . Hard to beat. Tips: get a reservation. It’s...the best way in for dinner. Keep in mind the portions are pretty good sized. Desert was good too.More

After a day cycling the Battle Creek Linear Trail, we decided to have a special dinner at Kitchen Proper, where we'd been once before, last year. The hummus with turmeric appetizer was definitely a starter I'd get again! The shrimp linguine had a lemony brightness...and flavor balance. The cheesecake with brulee topping was over the top! It was unlike any we'd had before. I'd get it all again. The service was friendly, knowledgeable, and the ambiance made for a memorable experience. We'll be back!More

Definitely the best restaurant in the general Battle Creek area...without exception. The talent of the owners and the food that is prepared is second to none in the area. Tony and Sarah have done a great job with Kitchen Proper. Most people would not expect...a restaurant of this quality in Battle Creek. It could compete with restaurants in much larger cities. In the 5 county area where there are many fine/excellent restaurants, it is in my top 5. Definitely should be on everyone's list...especially those that appreciate quality.More

I am a local and this is the best place to eat at in Battle Creek. We dine there at least 2x a month. Never (yes never) had a bad meal! Book it! Enjoy!

Shhh. Don’t tell anyone else! This place is a rarity and a big surprise for Battle Creek. I was simply amazed that Battle Creek has a place like this. Creative food and excellent service combined to make this a great evening. It’s not a large...place, and it can get a bit noisy with a few extra happy diners, but it’s well worth the visit. We will be back, and back, and back again!More

Can't say enough about this gem of a restaurant, serving a contemporary mix of Italian, Mediterranean, and American dishes, in a comfortable, relaxed setting. The food is truly fine, the vibe is fun. Nothing is more encouraging than entering a restaurant to the sound of...laughter. When four of us arrived on a mid-week night, the place was hopping: guests and staff alike seemed to be enjoying themselves. We were met with smiles (and apologies even though we'd arrived 10-15 few minutes before our reservation) and asked if we'd like drinks while we waited for our table. (Although the waiting area is cramped, there is seating.) Cocktails were perfect. My husband is always impressed when a bar gets his dry Manhattan just the way he likes it. Bingo for him--and everyone at the table. We all shared the baked goat cheese appetizer with crostini--and loved the combination of flavors: tart creamy cheese, walnuts, fruit. Next, each of us had either Caesar or the "Proper" (house) salad. I can speak to the Caesar, an excellent version. The house salad was also deemed "fresh" and "well-prepared," with good dressing. I ordered the pappardelle with ragu. I couldn't finish the portion, but wanted to as it was absolutely delicious. As was the rigatoni with Italian sausage, which I tasted. My husband had seared duck breast with red cabbage--big thumbs up from him. The fourth entree was ordered from the selection of tempting daily specials featured on a large chalkboard. (I know it had scallops and pasta, maybe shrimp, and I know it was devoured with joy.) Someone ordered a dessert for the table, but I couldn't manage even a bite (and the wine we had with dinner must have erased my memory of what it was). We all ordered coffee, wanting to linger in the experience. Service throughout on this busy night was great--friendly, accommodating, not at all stuffy. We walked out feeling the same happiness we saw on the faces of folks when we entered. If we had not been heading South a couple days later, we'd have returned. We certainly will next time we're in the area.More

Great food and service! I recommend the Ahi Tuna Flatbread. The downtown area of Battle Creek is getting a facelift and this place will be a key driver for drawing people to the area.

Recently my SO and I had dinner at this dining establishment. Overall, our experience was wonderful; great service, wine and food. I had the wild mushroom stuffed ravioli and it was truly wonderful; plenty of a nice variety of mushrooms. My friend had basil pesto...risotto with grilled salmon. I tried her dish and it was again, wonderful. The flour-less chocolate torte was one of the best I've ever had. The only complaint I had was the noise level. Part of that issue was our mistake by dining at 6:30, just when things started getting busy. The noise level of a table of four women next to us was stunning as were a couple of mixed tables a bit further into the restaurant. Is it really necessary to be so loud to have a good time as to disturb other diners? The drinking of alcohol doesn't help the situation. Next time we visit, we will make sure to dine earlier and order that great food.More
