The Gypsy Apple is back with a vengeance. This destination restaurant in charming Shelburne Falls offers first rate food, imaginatively prepared, in an intimate setting. A reasonably priced, concise menu reflects seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, and the service is friendly yet professional. Limited wine list, but an interesting selection and a good range of prices. The two appetizer specials we tried – spicy seafood gumbo and an heirloom tomato, cucumber and buratta salad in a green goddess dressing – were both memorable. The roast chicken dish, served with a sweet corn risotto, showed off the chef’s skills, and the catch of the day, a Faroe salmon dish served over lobster-infused mashed potatoes was perfect. The pot de creme rivaled the legendary version from the now defunct Green Street Café in Northampton. We will be back – often. Note that there is only a beer and wine license, and the A/C struggles a bit in extremely hot weather.

NYE Prix Fixe menu was SUBLIME
Hats off to the Chef.
Foundationally, the quality of all ingredients, PHENOM.
How the menu and dishes were orchestrated, the attention to tastes and perfect food preparation, like a concert from the kitchen to the table, to my mouth had a perfect cadence.
THE TASTES - nothing short of heavenly.

Fabulous! There are not enough stars to rate this restaurant! I took my family here last night. Our waitress was so accommodating with my 18 month old granddaughter as she kindly served us. Each dish was absolutely delicious. I had the Risotto and my daughter had the Mahi Mahi, superbly seasoned. She said it was the best Mahi Mahi she has ever had. All the dishes had flavors that delicately blended together, just wonderful! We definitely will come back.

We have been here maybe 10 times over the years, and have always had wonderful experiences: Service, food, ambience. This the THE place for fine dining in the northern Berkshires, and one of the best restaurants in Massachusetts. Small. Be sure to reserve ahead. Not pretentious. Just good.

A second visit; my wife and I enjoyed a memorable Valentine's dinner there in 2023. It's a cozy little place, with the ambience of a cherished French bistro.
And a good experience last night, but three stars because I want Gypsy Apple to improve. $45 for mains asks for something special; it's the most restos ask in our area.
A solid outing: food was professionally prepared and delicious. Filet mignon/ red wine and mushroom reduction, with asparagus and mashed potatoes x 2; seared salmon with lobster mashed potatoes; rack of lamb/ mint sauce and potato chimichurri. Local sautéed morel and lobsterhead mushrooms and crab cakes for apps. Vermouth/ sherry cocktails and glasses of Italian and Spanish red and white for dinner.
We declined dessert, because after ordering the crème brulée were informed that the refrigerator broke down.
Meats were all expertly cooked: a nice medium on the steaks, and a nice rare on the lamb, with good searing on both without affecting the juiciness within. Vegetables were the right texture and color, fresh green yet cooked just right. A good crabcake, and tasty mushrooms.
Server was engaging and professional, removing bread crumbs before the mains arrived.
A few constructive criticisms:
- The room was empty when we arrived at 6 sharp, even though it soon filled up. But it took 1 hour for the appetizers to arrive, and another hour for dinner. 2 hours pass before your guests get to enjoy your wonderful food? Our dining companions, who were recognized and greeted warmly by our server as semi-regulars, said that you are getting this reputation. So three hours for a dinner of 3-4 courses was not an off-your-game evening.
No free glass of wine to apologize for your delay?
- The music, while not technically loud, was brash and intrusive. '90s hip-hop and random alt rock at a classy place, with many of your guests over the age of 60? I still have some Biggie lyrics memorized from my 20s, but an elevated experience is NOT where I want to remember college parties.
You can do better; think of your guests. No music is best, but perhaps a little acoustic instrumental of any genre can work in the background, to muffle separate conversations.
- The presentation of the food was uninspiring, and most of the accompagnements were mundane. For $100 per person for everything (drinks apps mains tax tip), you can do better than simply steaming/ sautéeing asparagus stalks. And they were not even broken in the middle - the spear is the best part, not the stalk.
- Your mashed potatoes were a lost opportunity. Nothing outside of simply boiling one kind of potato with some butter and some salt? You can and should strive to inspire. Meat and potatoes can be elevated; use your creativity. Yes, for one of the plates, you used lobster mashed potatoes: bravo! But for the others, why not, for instance, some hazelnut oil? Or perhaps, a special kind of heirloom potato, or combination thereof? It can still be an effective template for the meat, without being intrusive.
Also, please do not serve good bread and allow some of it to be frozen in the middle.
We will be back, Gypsy Apple, because we support you, but please improve to the level of which you are capable.

We had heard many positive reviews about this bistro, so we made reservations. First, we really enjoy fine dining and its accompanying “no rush” pace, but the service here was slow. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our drinks and conversation while waiting. Our first courses - salads - were very good, but not special. I found the dressing on my salad a bit too acidic. My husband really liked his main course - pork chops - but my chicken dish was overly salted. That said, it was perfectly seared and beautifully presented. Our server was very helpful (we asked her opinion about a couple dishes and her replies showed that she knew the menu!), friendly, and professional.

It is amazing to me that little Shelburne Falls has a restaurant of this quality. It is a limited menu - 6 entrees and a special - but everything is cooked perfectly and served exquisitely. Call ahea for a reservation because they are very popular (no surprise there) and they are small. They seat about 18 people at a time. Cozy, friendly and delicious. I try to get there once a month!

Terrific food and service. Best chef in Western Mass and would highly recommend that you reserve early as the restaurant only seats about 15-20 diners.

Dinner with friends on a hot, summer night. (The drive to Shelburne Falls is delightful this time of year and the town is lovely.) Note that the restaurant does not have A/C, but we were not uncomfortable in their fan-cooled space. Few tables and white table cloths make for an intimate, elegant setting. Menu changes regularly and this night's offerings did not particularly inspire me. Nonetheless everything we had was deliciously prepared and very good. Excellent, personal service.

One of the jewels in New Englands crown of top restuarants. Classy setting with service and food to match. Michaelangelo is a genius and his customers reap the rewards.

This is an intimate 15 person restaurant. Even by Manhattan standards it is a very good bistro. You must try their potato pancakes. Unlike any others I have ever had and I live on the westside of Manhattan. How do you make a light, greaseless potato pancake. The chef won't tell. I have considered kidnapping and torture to find out
