One of the best places for atmosphere and food in Newburyport is the Grog on Middle St. So many trendy places have come and gone but yet the Grog with its brick, wood beam and classic look continues to draw crowds. I often visit and Friday night is one of my favorite times when I can unwind from the work... More

There was a 10 minute wait but the young gals at the desk couldn't keep track of who came in next. We ended up taking another couples table that were there before us. Drinks were ordered, meals were served than... where did our waitress go? The clam chowder was watery but good and the nachos were burnt with gobs of... More

The best things going for this restaurant are location, a nice atmosphere, and their one buck oysters. The oysters were the saving grace of our meal. My son and I had a dozen each (actually, only 23, guess they miscounted). At a buck apiece, and the size/quality, these are probably one of the best deals in the area---other restaurants in... More

My husband, a Brit, likes his fish and chips and we have had this at many different restaurants. We started with a dozen oysters - very fresh, with two sauces for dipping and an excellent price of $1 each. If you like really good chunky horseradish sauce, this is the place. I had no intention of sharing a half dozen.... More

We had a very warm welcome from the bar tender, in an old world setting. With 31 drafts, a selection of beers and hard cider. It was fun to taste a couple before you buy. I love oysters so at a buck a piece, well it made me smile. Glade we stopped.

I have been to The Grog several times over the past 10 years that I have lived in Newburyport. I like the location (downtown) and the atmosphere. The food is average. The menu is typical (fried food, burgers etc) and nothing is particularly flavorful. The restaurant has character and the staff is pleasant. Service is a solid "good"!

Friends and I visited the Grog in March, 2016 to see a band playing there, so we decided to have dinner there first. The restaurant was crowded; we had to wait for a table but they texted us when they were ready for us which was great. We got seated, ordered drinks and dinner, then waited. After what seemed like... Love the atmosphere and the food. The pan seared flounder (in summer) is very good. It's sole in the winter. The sandwiches and burgers are also very good and affordable. My wife loves their baked haddock.

We loved this place! Cozy, warm, the best fish chowder on the planet. The waitress was from Boston and so adorable. Fabulous food! We love love Newburyport!

Three of us went for lunch and there was enough variety to satisfy. The fish and chips looked ok. My salad was advertised as having bacon with a citrus vinaigrette. What arrived was a cup full of chunks of pork in a vaguely citrusy sauce that was to be put on top of lovely greens. It was not at all... More
