About
Basil is a warm neighborhood restaurant serving American cuisine with an Italian soul. Chef and owner Tom McGue changes the menu seasonally and offers nightly specials that reflect the best of what is fresh each day. The main dining room is a quiet, comfortable place to enjoy a fine meal with friends and family. And the pub offers a more relaxed setting and a casual menu. Basil also has an upstairs room that can be reserved for private parties and functions. We would also be happy to cater events in your home or at other locations.

I think we are all in the same boat camp that we love to support this venue and the servers, chefs, and bartenders that we’ve grown to know for over a decade.
Having said that, although we know what we’ll get from a food standpoint, we also know what we’ll get from a service standpoint.
Specifically, the bartender is “all business”, rough around the edges, and less than ideal for a restaurant that charges city prices in a suburban establishment.
This isn’t a onetime experience - rather a consistency that all patrons deal with. We love to support the legacy of Basil but are at the end of our whits with the attitude of the bartender/bar manager.
My wife and I gladly spend $200-$250 per visit but tonight’s visit is probably our last. With money well earned and service ill-given, it’s only a matter of time before we all leave.
Complacency is a trait that does not survive well in this post Covid era.

The ride to Basil to meet friends for dinner was very long, but the trip was SO worth it. Everyone's food was delicious. It is rare for a dinner to be so good that you are still thinking about it the next day, but that was the case for me. The Shrimp Piccata was perfection, and it followed delicious bread for the table and wonderful French onion soup. I can't forget the cocktail list... creative with well-balanced creations. I wish this restaurant was closer. I would be a regular!

I am a bit mixed on this place and could not believe I have lived in the area and never known about the place or even seen it. This spot is tucked away in downtown Medfield and you would never even know its there since its off the main street, tucked in a neighborhood behind the village shops. First off, this place is set up inside a house which is both good and bad, parking for this place (I would hate to be the neighbors) is tough and if you cant find a spot in the large lot across from the place, you are stuck almost parking on some neighbors lawn or blocking their driveway which we did.
This place is not short on business, Saturday night their was a line out the door and unless you have a reservation, you are not getting into the place. The set up inside is tight, very odd, small booth areas in what looks like it used to be a living room, small tight cramped hostess station, bar in the back you have to seek out since its near kitchen and then an upstairs which has long banquet tables which was again, odd, but it worked.
The menu here is a very large book, loaded with old school Italian dishes and speciality cocktails and an extensive wine list. The staff here is very good, friendly and fast and they keep up with the busy tables. The place is pretty loud inside and since its tight quarters its even louder.
The food in this place is absolutely great, cooked to perfection, very tasty dishes, the veal parm was excellent and so was the calamari and the drinks are good as well. I was shocked, since I have not had anything close to North End Italian in the suburbs at all except maybe Sweet Basil in Needham. This place is great, aside from the odd set up inside and the parking, the prices were what you would expect and the portions are mid to large so you get plenty of food. What a treat and I was happily surprised to find a good restaurant outside Boston proper. Definitely will visit here again and may try take out as well.

Food sucked. Caesar Salad had no dressing. Only wet lettuce with some cheese flakes. Puke! Chicken Piccata served with sautéed spinach over linguini. Watered dow piccata sauce. Barf!

Consistently excellent food with outstanding service. The menu offers a great assortment of entrées, making it easy to find something for everyone. The chicken parmesan and steaks are always decent. Definitely worth a visit!

This hidden neighborhood spot is well worth checking out. The food was quite good and reasonably priced. The service was not 4 star, and the decor is a littl old fashioned, but those things did not keep us from enjoying some delicious veal and good salads.

First visit back since pre Covid and was not disappointed! From the drinks to the service it was all top notch!
Had risotto with steak tips, caprese salad and key lime pie.
All amazing!!
Waitstaff was warm and friendly and attentive.
And I just love that this place is tucked away in a residential neighborhood!
This place is a gem!

Have been going to Basil's restaurant for over 30 years..way back when it was called the Francis...always very happy with food and service. NOT ANYMORE. Always had a beautiful filet Mignon....so good ....always cooked perfect. Looking forward to this dish tonightl..made reservations ahead...we get there and filet is off the menu....this new york steak is in it's place. Well we ordered the NY sirloin because we had no other choice...awful.... chewy...loaded with fat...could have gotten a better cut at stop and shop....and it wa 48,00 a plate! Owner must have gotten ride of filet because of the price...trying to save a buck...well after 30 years of going there won't be back....too bad the owner got cheap....not a good experience tonight....went way downhill...too bad

1st time back in many years to meet with friends since we moved out of the neighborhood, we started with cocktails and we had a wonderful dinner of Escargot, Clams Casino , Veal Parm , Filet Mignon , Roast Crispy Duckling , Veal Shrimp Chicken Scampi, all were delicious and cooked perfectly. We shared a blueberry bread pudding that was different but delicious. The service was friendly and spot on . Nice to know there are tablecloth restaurants and proper service still available to enjoy a relaxing well prepared dinner , thank you :))

We visit this restaurant at least 4-5 times a month not including an additional 4-5 take out orders. We love that it is in our neighborhood, good food and waitstaff. We usually have the same waitress and she is truly a delight.
My problem is with the gentleman at the front desk, ( not the very nice gentleman with the ponytail, he is great) I’m not even sure if this is the owner.
It’s to the point, I cringe when he answers the phone , you feel his negativity and he is so unfriendly in person and on the phone. I won’t list the specific examples, but there are several.
I said to my husband tonight, I think I’m finally done with visiting this restaurant. Customers should feel welcomed especially customers that visit as often as we do, hospitality 101.

You know the restaurant that has hit its peak and now can’t keep up with the success? Then you know Basil. Crazy busy at 5pm on a lSaturday. Server was brusque, no eye contact. Very 1st thing she said to us was “ok tonight’s specials are....”. I interrupted her & asked if we could order a drink. She got the hint - and I got a short pour. We ordered coconut shrimp appetizer- excellent! She checked on us but as soon as she asked how we were doing she walked away while we were in the middle of talking. Guess she didn’t really want to know. We asked to hold onto our menus to order dinner after our appetizers. She only left one. Don’t know why since there was a stack of them readily available. The bread basket included bread that was stale on one side and obviously had been sitting out at least all day if not longer. We ordered dinner - my seafood Bianca has shrunk in size since my last visit. Had 2 shrimp, 2.5 scallops (yes one was cut in half) and 5 tiny clams on a small bed of spaghetti. $29.00. My husband ordered the filet, medium rare. It came a bit more well done - closer to medium, but more disappointing was that it was dry and mealy - like chewy and just not juicy or what you think you will get in a $35 steak. Had to ask another nearby server for pepper to try and give it some flavor since ours was completely empty -who preps the tables? Did he complain? No, because our server was no where to be found for a while so we decided to cut our losses and eat what we could and get out of there. We know the servers name but will not include it . She hopefully will learn how to do her job with some caring and customer service. I’m not writing to cause her a problem but OMG- is there anyone overseeing the servers? It had been several months since we’d been to Basil. We’re done with it at this point. Ok to meet for a drink and an appetizer maybe but no more $150 -$200 meals. Not worth it. They’ve become a victim of their own success.
