I have been frequenting Cala as a local tavern for the last four years and finally decided to share notes with fellow travelers last November. But stop the presses. Someone finally had the common sense to let Chef Julio do his thing. Maybe it was...Covid. Maybe it was Mercury coming out of retrograde. Whatever the reason, it makes a lot of sense and it makes me very happy. A few weeks ago Chef came out asking for recommendations for a name for his new creation which he described as a deviled egg that isn’t really a deviled egg. I insisted upon samples and he was happy to oblige. Bear with me. He presented a platter of lightly fried eggs with an avocado based cream where the yolk would normally be. It was topped with a pinch of Canadian bacon, spits of arugula and tomato and a shred of pickled red onion. Heavenly eggs, we at the bar declared. Angel, not devil. 👼 Oh my. What happened, I asked my favorite bar keep. We finally let Chef do his thing, she explained. So I let my guard down and decided to explore. I had jalapeño poppers the size of my palm, arancini (Italian rice balls) with edamame. I observed a nearby table devour a flatbread topped with fig and goat cheese. He’s added a fried haddock burrito that’s about to become a permanent addition to the menu. Lucky you! With appetizers like this, who needs an entrée? With this move, Cala has upped its game and I have upped my score. This place is a perfect 5 for casual dining, with choices that meet every dietary need and depth of hungry. And everybody is still good about Tom Brady.More

Cala’s is my go to for Sunday afternoon football watching. Even with Covid, crowds are positive and friendly, though socially distanced and properly masked. Sunday specials include 50 Cent wings any way you want them, a great way to kick off the game. The pub...has TVs everywhere you look, so keeping track of games and scores is easy. There are collective groans over the wayward and rebuilding Patriots team. For outlanders visiting from afar, don’t worry. We’ll get over it eventually. Whether it’s seafood, a variety of tacos, hamburgers, pizza or inventive salads, the creative chefs here have you covered. Wine and beer lists are plentiful and reasonable and there are always some interesting specialty drinks on hand. You can walk in solo or with a crowd; the place is accommodating. In addition to restaurant seating, there is space adjacent to the front of the restaurant on the sidewalk and into the street, heated as may be required as the weather changes. The seafood and street tacos are authentic, filled to the brim with ingredients and very tasty. Burgers are served plain to suit the picky pallets of the youngest folks or piled with interesting combinations of cheeses, vegetables, bacon and even eggs. Diners at the next table were heard exclaiming over their pizzas. Full dinners featuring local seafood, chowders, soups and healthy unique salads are all good choices. Sandwiches accommodate lighter meal needs. Specials are listed on the blackboards. Menus are available by paper or via scan. Given the location, in downtown Manchester by the Sea’s chic and well-heeled neighborhood, prices are moderate. Service is a bit slow. The pandemic has throttled all of us. But it’s friendly and kind: that goes a long way right now. Portions are over-sized. I walk out with a doggie bag every time without room for desserts so I’m unable to detail the confections on the menu. Cala’s is worth a trip to this pretty little town. Enjoy!More

The price point was high for lunch, but the quality of the food made up for it. Inside and outside seating available. GF options available. I would go back for the food, but I would lower my expectation if I were looking for the staff...to be polite. Our server was rushed and abrupt, almost bristly with her chilly insincerity. As for the food, we had a blackened salmon BLT which was awesome, a turkey club with a generous amount of meat and fish tacos. I would recommend any of these dishes. I would go back for the food, but I left feeling unwelcome.More

I had never been to Manchester by the Sea and we took a road trip earlier this week. We had heard about the great pizza restaurant but were wanting something different. In the center of town was a small restaurant with a parking place right...in front. It was quaint and established. We were seated right away. There were plenty of items to choose from from Mexican to American pub food. I ordered two tacos, one pork and one shrimp tempura. Both delicious and a good size. I ordered rice and beans with it which I could have skipped as they were very plain. My sister ordered fish and chips with sweet potato fries. It was a perfect portion with well cooked fish. The fries were shared and were really delicious. All in all very good food and a friendly place. I would go backMore

This is the perfect place for really great food and drink near the harbor, We came on a Sunday afternoon to watch football and eat seafood. The fish stew was fabulous! Their calamari and fish tacos were sublime. It’s not just great food, but the...place is extremely friendly too. Our bar tender (Jenny) not only mixed a superior Manhattan, but also mixed up a friendly conversation and guided us around the menu kind a pro. This place is wonderful!More

We were on the way to Gloucester and stopped here for lunch and were so glad we did. Cala’s Fish Stew was superb, great tomato base flavor and plenty of fish, shrimp, calamari and mussels. One of the best I’ve had in quite some time....The two slices of bread was slightly charred which complimented the stew tastefully. Worth the trip!More

Staying in a nearby Airbnb, we entered Cala's as walk-ins -- good crowd for around 7:30. While we enjoyed our meals, our request for separate checks seemed to confuse our waiter (this was never an issue anywhere else during our 17 day trip). Initially, this...meant he he brought no food for me, though he eventually found it in the kitchen. Then it took quite a while to pay our bills (both credit cards, so unsure about the problem).More
