It's a tough life when you're a wine drinker and everyone else in the family is a brew pub enthusiast. However, dinner here was fun for all. Loved the venue--a big brewery building at the end of the street. It was too chilly for us...to sit at the tables outside, but I bet they're fun in nicer weather. The restaurant area itself had a great vibe--exposed beams, brick walls and ducting gave it an industrial decor flavor. Through large windows, the brewing area could be seen. Be sure to check out the really smashing door handles on the way in, and the clever use of a truck body behind the bar.
The beer menu offered all of Ipswich Ale's offerings, including some combination drinks, four or five different beer flights, wine (one each white, rose and red--they are a brewery, after all) and non-alcoholic offerings. Food menu was varied. Appetizers were appetizer size, enough to share a nibble with others, but not overwhelming. We chose the baked brie with lingonberry jam and crostini, and loaded Tater Tots. All get thumbs up from our group of three. For main courses, we had pickle-brined wings, chicken piccatta and a chicken-pesto-pasta combination. The wings were a bit odd, and this comes from a wing enthusiast, but were good with the sauce that came with them, and were big and meaty. The pasta dish disappeared, so the person ordering that obviously had no reservations about that choice. The chicken piccatta was served with dirty mashed potatoes and slender green asparagus, with a lemon caper sauce. The pieces of chicken were pounded slightly and cooked just right. The asparagus was thin and delicious, and the sauce had a slightly stronger lemon taste than many similar renditions of the same dish I've had elsewhere. It was pleasant to really get some "piccatta" in a chicken piccatta.
Our group of three ordered two different beer flights, ingeniously delivered to the table in wooden racks that took up less space on the table and were easier for the servers to manage than flat trays. The wine--meh. As I said, it is a brewery, after all. Staff was friendly and helpful.
There were plenty of notices, advising of the different events going on at different times: a "breakfast for dinner" evening, live music, and brewery tours on Saturdays and Sundays.
Atmosphere was family-friendly, with several families arriving as we dined. Burgers and sandwiches are on the menu
Great place to go, and Ipswich is a wonderful town with lots to do, so make the trip!More
