I tried this pizza once in 2018 and it was unremarkable. After reading all the glowing reviews I thought maybe I caught them on an off night. I tried the pizza again this month. It tastes like cardboard. Very thin, flavorless crust. Sauce and toppings...were really light. It tasted like a frozen pizza put in the microwave. The good news is the food is inexpensive.More
We came in with a child and the Hostess said sit anywhere you want and the waitress will bring the high chair. We selected our seat and we were advised high chair would not fit there (we knew it would) and suggested we go to...this back room. Mind you I grew up here and never knew there was a back room. Yup, we were forced to sit in a room where only people who had children with them were forced to sit. We were kind of offended however we let it go because we had been traveling all day. Usually we make this a must place to go when we are home. We will think twice about it now due to how we were treated. Ann Marie the server was the saving grace of the whole evening.More
We have been here so many times and the pizza never disappoints! Wonderful flavors, great pizza selections and fun place to be with friends and family. Wait staff exceptional every time. Looking forward to next visit.
The Riverview is a bar that serves pizza only and is located near downtown Ipswich, adjacent to what was once a Sylvannia Lighting factory, where my dad was employed from 1958-1969. Why it took him until 1964 ( the Riverview opened for business in 1947)...to become a Riverview customer is a mystery that he's taken to his grave. What I can tell you is that almost nothing of real significance has changed about the place in the 57 years that I've been dining there. The knotty pine paneling, red naugahyde booths and Formica top tables are basically the same as they were when I was in grade school. Circa 20 years ago, an annex was added to expand the dining area and it blends in perfectly with the original "decor." The rooms are backlit with the light fixtures hidden behind the wall molding, which enhances the retro vibe of the place. The 'View is broken-in but not broken down, aged but not shabby, somewhat cramped but still tidy and well-maintained. It's "divey" in the best sense of the word, totally no-frills and unpretentious. It's not a sports bar; there is one t.v. at the bar and it was only recently upgraded to high-definition. For an old haunt that has somewhat of a "townie" feel, there are no obnoxious regulars lurking at the bar and anybody can walk in and feel comfortable. There are video games in the annex to keep kids occupied until the pizzas arrive. There's also a compact disc jukebox in the dining room which has replaced the 45 r.p.m. jukebox that existed until approximately 15-20 years ago. Now, about the pizzas: they are 12- inch pies. Any adult with an appetite could finish the entire pie and crave another one. The crust is thin, like a cracker or flatbread crust, but somehow both firm and moist instead of dry and brittle. Usually there is just enough, very crisp "handle" to grip with the thumb and forefinger because the sauce and cheese occupy almost the entire surface of the crust. This is where the Riverview pizza parts company with the average pizza. Expect to fill up on the sauce and cheese and not the crust. Oh, the sauce! Thick, tangy, not too salty, not too acidic. The cheese seems to be purely cheddar, rich, gooey and not too salty. It has no stringy factor, so one must assume there is no mozzarella. The topping offerings are very basic and are mostly processed and not fresh (my wife is of the assumption that the chicken chunks come out of a can), but, from my point of view, that enhances the flavor experience for me. The Riverview pizza is a "bar pizza," same as it ever was for at least 50 years. The only concession that it seems to have made to updating its offerings is that there has been a Hawaiian pizza on the menu since perhaps the new Millennium. By keeping it simple, the Riverview has been able to keep its costs down and pass the savings on to the customer. This is not Sicilian, brick oven, New York, North End, Greek takeout or artisanal pizza. Like the building itself, Riverview pizza is a throwback to less complicated times. Since the Covid pandemic has abated somewhat, a sense of order has returned to my life in that we've been able to grab stools at the bar and enjoy our Riverview experience as we did before the crisis. However, the pandemic did take somewhat of a toll on the business. We used to be able to bop in at 11:00 and get served, but now 10:00 is the closing time. The prices have increased, but are still more than reasonable. What has changed for the worst is that several of the waitresses, who had been employed there for years, decided to move on, leaving only a few of the veteran crew behind. One of the most pleasant factors of the Riverview experience was the familiarity and rapport that we'd developed with the wait staff. It's almost like a passing of an era. Beyond that, everything's the same as it ever was. My daughter and grandchildren arrived here tonight from Michigan and we had Riverview take out waiting for them, as requested. When my son and his family come to visit from N.C., the Riverview is the first dining destination. 57 years and 4 generations later, 800 miles or 15 minutes away, our family can never get enough of Riverview pizza.More
Bar pizza is well, BAR PIZZA. Not many surprises, not sexy but, hey, this is Ipswich so let's keep it simple. That's the formula here- good but not great. The locals salivate at the name "Riverview"' I HAD to try the place when I moved there-...I mean I was told to immediately go there...... so I did. It's limited on many levels BUT the beer was cold and the pizza was hot and good. So, I tried it and now have moved on with my life. Next !!!!!!!!!More
went there after a movie and they have some of the best Pizza, Just about anything you want they have for toppings, full bar. This is our, No Credit cards excepted. No Delivery, No Wifi. Just good Pizza and reasonably process
This place has been here for years and a little hard to find. It is over near the epsco building. They sell small individual pictures and there's always a big line for table. However if you want a salad or anything else you are out...of luck as Pizza is it.More
Riverview is the only way to enjoy a pizza In Ipswich !! Sometimes a long wait but always a great pizza, Some old favorites and some unusual like salami topping. Service is efficient and accurate. A fun, place for all ages to enjoy great food and...service. Open for evenings.price are very ,very reasonable! Serving great pizza for a long time ,More
It's the only thing on the menu. And it is just so good! Small pizzas mean you can have your own personal pie and take some home for a snack. Prices are incredibly reasonable. The decor is late 50 's and I love it. Nothing...fancy here but great Pizza and a cold beer are just the perfect combo.More
Ok, I understand this place has been around forever and a lot of people seem to be blinded by their nostalgia when it comes to the pizza. Yes, the pizzas are cheap but that's because they are small bar-sized pizzas, I can eat 2 of...them any day of the week. I too heard the hype about riverview when I came to this area, and was expecting the pizza to be outstanding, and it just isn't. It's not even close. It's average bar pizza, I can name you 5 places on the south shore that are much better tasting. If I wanted old school decor, I'll go to my grandmother's house. If I want cheap beer I'll buy a case of Busch Light. If I want truly outstanding pizza, I won't go here...More
Was was the local place to go for pizza. VERY disappointing...while very cheap, pizza is bland and place hasn't been updated since the 1970s. Extremely noisy (with kids literally running around the place)! Waitress served us as if she couldn't care less if we there...even...the soda was flat! I will NOT be back (they couldn't pay ME to eat there again)!More
We have been coming here for over 25 years. What you need to know is that this is not gourmet pizza but a style of individual pizzas that are tasty and inexpensive. Plain is $6.50, toppings like 50 cents each. Beers are 3 bucks or...so. They do an incredible take-out business as noted by another diner. Hopefully, this was a one time issue. Great pizza with a 60'sor 70's kind of atmosphere.More
Been to Riverview for years. Been recently sold to children of the original owner. We were seated gave our order, and I noticed only orders coming out were take outs, boxes and boxes for 45 minutes. No one seated in the restaurant was served. They...only catered to call ins. I approached the new owner and told him what I observed. No apology, so I was right when I told him that they were doing call ins and leaving seated customers to wait. We had to box our pizza when it was finally done. We waited an hour! A caring owner would have offered a free pizza or apology. Would have not happened if original owner, the father were there. Very disappointing. No way to run an established business.More
This place is awesome! Had pizza here for 25 years! Had It flown over every time relatives went to Boston! 22 years waiting for a fresh one! Worth the wait! Well done Riverview! Always done take out, eating in the restaurant and the Pizza is...even better than the take out.More
