I went here with my parents last night. They let me choose and I picked Essex Seafood because I have always liked the food there. I got the Haddock Boat which means you get a large slice of haddock with either onion rings or French fries. I picked the onion rings and they were delicious For an appetizer I got... More

Originally from Gloucester but moved to Florida 14 years ago. But every time I come back this is definitely on the must do list. Incredible portions and competitive prices.

This is a usual stop for us when we are in Cape Ann. Consistently excellent seafood. We've had clams, scallops, calamari, fisherman's platter---all wonderful. Fries are good too. Onion rings cut by hand to order. This visit was with my friend and his children who got the chicken fingers.....real chicken tenders which were delicious. The restaurant is inland so no... More

Our first time to try whole belly clams. We split an order of fried whole clams, onion rings and fries. It was all very good. The price was rather high we thought--$28 to split the whole dinner. We did like the clams though.

Of the four best known (I think) informal fried seafood restaurants (Woodmans, Clam Box, Farnhams, and Essex), Essex has become our favorite (replacing the Clam Box). The Clam Box is still strong, but we had an "iffy" experience, are less tolerant of the slow moving line, and it's slightly higher prices. In 2016, Essex has been consistently excellent. we generally... More

We never get to try the rest of the menu because the lobster rolls are so delicious! It's served with fries or onion rings, both perfectly cooked. We need to plan a multi-day trip to the area sometime so we can order a fried platter--in addition to the lobster rolls. Hardly worth experimenting at other places that charge so much... More

Do yourself a favor and don't order the fried clams. Even though,on three occasions, i requested big bellies which the counter person said they had,out came the usual tiny, overly-battered tasteless clams. In addition, hoping to get some flavor , i requested that they lightly fry them. This too was ignored, and as usual, they were overcooked. No more chances, Essex. Goodbye.

It's not on the water, so the tourists don't tend to stop there, but it's where my family goes for seafood. The fried platters are amazing, as is the crab sandwich for lunch. The portions are very generous and everything tastes like it was just caught, which it was. No self-respecting New Englander eats clam strips; we like our clams... More

We usually get the fisherman's platter and this one beats any of the area restaurants . We drive right by the Clam box and Woodman's at least once a month for this great local place. Forget the tourist traps and try Essex Seafood!

Finally after years of living in the area I finally made my way to Essex Seafood. I was always a Farnham's girl for fried clams (because of course there is no better place ON THE PLANET for clams that Essex) but went to Essex Seafood on the insistence of a friend. Delicious clams, perfectly fried. Excellent onion rings and pretty... More
