Four of us ordered takeout so there’ll be lots of information in this review. We shared one appetizer and we all ordered main dishes, which come with two side dishes. So here goes. The corn nuggets appetizer contained identifiable kernels of corn and were sweet...but not too sweet, with a nice texture. The main dishes were tilapia, catfish, sea scallops, and fried clams. All were really good. Although all were fried, Mid Atlantic’s method of frying does not produce greasy seafood -- it was actually fairly light. The catfish and tilapia breading was crunchy and tasty and the fish was moist. The tilapia was regarded as a bit “fishy” by some of us; if we had to vote between the two we’d vote for the catfish. The sea scallops were very good, big; the breading didn’t stick to them – overall good but not exceptional. The fried clams were great and overall the lack of greasiness made the main dishes much, much lighter than we’d expected. Now for the side dishes: potato salad very good; steamed broccoli was fine; collards good; sweet potato fries were okay but a little soggy by the time we got back to the house. If we’d eaten at the restaurant they’d have been fine. Plantains were better than average – tender without being mushy. The hush puppies were basic hush puppies. Green bean side dish was good but just what you’d expect. However, we found out the hard way that there are two types of “butter beans” – lima beans and Sieva beans. One person in our group is from Virginia and for him butter beans are Sieva beans. In Washington DC however, butter beans are lima beans. An unfortunate disconnect! For dessert, the red velvet cake was very good. We also ordered banana pudding for dessert. Our Virginia comrade, who, it must be said, makes his own banana pudding, pronounced it as not the real deal. His criticisms were: there are supposed to be bananas throughout, there should be more bananas in general, there should be more vanilla wafers on top, and there should be whipped cream on top. But all in all a very good feast – especially for $67 for four of us! We will definitely return.More
