The crabs are best all around. The salinity of the waters makes the crabs taste 10X better than anywhere else in Maryland. You must put on Bucket List of places to eat MD Crabs! Plus, Oysters are perfect!
I've reviewed this place 6 years ago when we were in the area and it hasn't changed. Yes the place looks like a dump and the services slow, but every order is cooked per order. The husband, wife and sometimes daughter are the people who...are cooking and serving. My wife had the stuffed rockfish which she said was absolutely the best she's ever had and I had the fried seafood platter. Also a bowl of Boston clam chowder. Every entree was absolutely delicious. Yes spend a little time here and wait while your meal is cooked and it'll be well worth it.More
The owner and his wife (the Courtney’s) have been cooking-up and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week for what seems like an eternity. She cooks - He serves! We thoroughly enjoyed fresh broiled rockfish, perfect and meaty soft crabs and a screaming...delicious bowl of vegetable crab soup all caught that same morning. Two generous salads on the side and we were smiling!
Nothing fancy mind you but it’s a step back in time we’ll worth a visit.More
This is a well kept St. Mary’s secret!!! The food here was amazing! The people there are amazing. I chose the crab cake and fries. We also got a Shrimp and Crab Po Boy. Everything was perfect!!!! You won’t be disappointed!!!
In a cement shack at the end of the road in Ridge you will find Courtney's - a classic and tradition in the area.
In wood-looking panel walls, with all kinds of things hanging from them, with a bar up front and restaurant to the...side, and almost no view of the water that is immediately adjacent, you don't come here for gourmet ambience, you come here for the fried or grilled seafood fresh from the Chesapeake. You come in your jeans, your fishing gear, or your Sunday clothes, as families and friends, and you expect it to take a little time because it is primarily Tom (who has been doing it for the better part of 50 years) taking care of you, unless some of his local friends stop in to help take the load off of him. Wine is either red or white, plenty of beer, iced tea and sodas.More
Our 2 hour and 11 minute (on Google Maps) from BWI to Scotland, Maryland turned into 6 hours with traffic jams and accidents on single lane bridges. We got an order called into Courtney's on the road and got our order a little before closing....Took us another 40 minutes to get to our beach house, find the right door in the dark and get upstairs with our food. SO it had cooled off considerably, no fault of Courtney's. But here is what we liked about this restaurant:
Cooling off or not, the Crab Cakes are fantastic.
These Maryland style hush puppies are different from what we are used to in the southwest, but were very good
Good fries, great Rockfish, and sides of vegetables were excellent. And we loved the bread that came with our meals.
Staff were friendly and helpfulMore
When I entered Courtney’s a customer and a staff member were tussling over his bill. I was not acknowledged in any way for a full 15 minutes. Meanwhile, another couple came in, also unacknowledged. Once the bill was settled, we were told to sit anywhere....This was not a good start. I ordered oyster stew and a soft crab slammer. Apparently the staff member was the entire staff of the restaurant. After considerable time, the stew came out hot and loaded with juicy oysters. Then the slammer arrived. Described as a soft crab with lettuce, tomato and bacon on a bun, there was no mention of mayo ( which I detest). At the first bite, I knew. I took off the top bun and figured I could scrape it off. I tried but it was also a quarter inch thick on the bottom bun. Ugh! I waved down the server/cook who took it back to the kitchen, placed the same soft crab on plain white untoasted bread with lettuce, tomato, and bacon and brought it back without the 2 claws it had before (though detached). Why not another bun and where did the claws go? What I had was okay. It probably would have been great if I’d known to ask for no mayo. Needless to say, it took a long time to pay the bill at this one person operation. Would I return? Never.More
This restaurant is very simple- but the food is excellent! And the staff is very nice!
Would highly recommend this place.
The crab cake sandwich was wonderful! All crab with little filler. The soft crab smasher sandwich was amazing.
We will definitely return!
