Cobb Island is lands end in Charles County and clearly a watermen’s community. Captain John’s fits in perfectly with excellent seafood with a dining room situated right on the community dock. The tomato based (think Manhattan clam chowder but with crab meat) Chesapeake crab soup...was superb, arriving piping hot in a huge bowl. Unlike many similar restaurants you get a choice of crab cakes- either lump crab meat or the ‘traditional’ made with claw meat. I ordered the traditional, which is my preference for Maryland crab cakes and it was excellent. The service was friendly and attentive and the view of the water only added to the experience.More

Has an Old fashion atmosphere. Had crab cake sandwich, it was very good. Members of my party had crab and fish. They like the salad bar.

We had lunch here. We were seated immediately & we had a great seat by the water. The service was good. The salad bar was one of the best that I have had. the fried scallops were good & the Crab cake was ok.

Second time we've been to Captain John's this summer, second really good meal. Crab cakes were terrific, meaty with very little if any filler. Fried flounder sandwich was straightforward and delicious. A little off the beaten path, but it's worth the trip.

I have considered Captain John’s a staple for many many years. Took some visitors from out of state to experience a Southern Maryland Crabs house. I hate to say it but I was absolutely embarrassed by the choice I made in restaurants. We first noticed...a terrible smell when we walked in on a Tuesday evening. Came to find out that the ladies room toilets were overflowing and the sewer was backed up. Then we saw that the floor of the dinning room was just covered in food. The restaurant was not crowded at all so there was really no reason why somebody could not have swept the floor or tended to the restroom. Then we made our way to the salad bar and found it was all picked over and in desperate need of cleaning and refill. Food everywhere. Our dinners were ok but hard to enjoy food when you’re surrounded by filth and stench. I sure hope Captain Johns gets their act back together.More

Loved the crabs! They were cooked just right. The old bay seasoning was so delicious with all the tender meat.

Went there for their Seafood buffet. There was lot's of shrimp, fish, salad, crabs, on and on and on. After eating, I was stuffed because it was so good, it seemed like I could not get enough. Their claim is "A true Southern Maryland Style...crab house". The restaurant is down by the water with boats parked along the pier. Their web page is cjcrab.com. I had no problem finding a place to park, but there was several vehicles in their parking lot. The restaurant had the look of being there for many years but was in pretty good shape. The inside was kind of small as it looked bigger from the outside. Inside [restaurant] it was some what hectic and loud with all the people. But when you go outside and sit by the water, it was so relaxing and quiet.More

Captain John's is walking distance from our home, and is a safe bet when looking for an authentic southern Maryland meal. Everything here screams "local", wait staff, crabs, fish and good ole corn on the cob. Secure a seat outside to enjoy dockside service, or...if in a big group, ask about the private room upstairs which provides a nice view of the harbor at sunset. I recommend the steamed crabs in the summer months, and anything with an oyster during the late autumn and winter. The mid-week seafood buffet is a good value. If you looking for fine dining, this is not the place, but then again, they do not try. I particularly enjoy that customers seem to come from all races, ethnicities and socio-economic status, and it works. Glad places this still exist.More

This is a huge old place made for big crowds. Crabs have been great everytime I've been there. Portions are large. Nice view of the marina from most tables. Service has been hit or miss. Last time there we had an unattentive waitress. The softshell...crab platter I had was huge. It had 3 jumbo softshells plus 2 sides. It was good and well fried. The restaurant struck me as dirty. We went for an early dinner on Sunday and it looked like the floor was still full of debris from Saturday night. Bathrooms were not clean either.More

Ate here on Sat 5/25/2019 for dinner. No wait or reservation needed. Was able to sit outside at an umbrella-covered table next to the dock. Service was timely and friendly. Many tasty choices on the menu - seafood and otherwise. The Seafood platters and many...of the Seafood dinners are close to $30 - though I had the very good Devil crab cakes dinner (with 2 sides) for $18. There are also salads/soups/baskets (of fried oysters, or shrimp, or fish/chips, etc) and sandwiches for more reasonable prices in the teens or under. Had the mozarella cheese sticks and hush puppy appetizers that were delicious. The mixed drink selection and quality was so-so. Husband regretted ordering a chocolate shaky which was very watery...sort of like chocolate on shaved ice...not what he was expecting. The view seated dockside of Neale Sound was lovely with the sun glistening off the water and there was a nice breeze blowing. Definitely recommend eating here. After dinner, went over the nearby bridge to Cobb Island itself and drove to the Potomac River's edge for a breath taking view.More
