Wanted BBQ while in the area. It is a small place but great BBQ. It is self service with ordering at the counter and you pick it up but the seating is comfortable and there are tables under cover out side.

I've been gone from St. Mary's County for 4 years. I'm back for a week and wanted to make sure to eat at Smokey Joe's. The dark meat quarter chicken was tasty as always, as was the sauce. I tried the seasoned kale for the first time, and it was great. My other side was red potato salad, which was... More

It doesn't look like much from the road....But considering it was a gas station once upon a time, it's come a long way since those days. Smokey Joe's quickly established itself as a fixture ~10 years ago on 3 Notch Road near gate 1 of Naval Air Station Patuxent River. Although it occupies a prime location for business lunch traffic,... More

They offered a military discount, I'm not sure if they normally do, but this won brownie points!! Their beans are really good too, if you like BBQ beans.

Decent, if average, bbq eats. The tables could have used more attention and the lines were long and staff were slow. Not bad for the price, but it's not somewhere I would rush back to.

Never an off day here. It sure isn't fancy (a converted gas station/auto repair shop), but you can depend on getting some good BBQ and sides at a fair price.

My husband and I ate here for the first time last weekend. I had a quarter chicken and fries. There was just enough sauce on the skin of the chicken to taste but not so much that it overwhelmed the flavor of the chicken itself. The chicken was also moist. They also have liquid sugar for their iced tea rather... More

I love this place. In fact, I love everything about this place. On the side of a busy road in an old gas station (bathroom access is from the outside!), Smokey Joe's is 100% real. The Q is cooked on site and is wonderful. Smokey, meaty ribs with not too much sauce, pulled pork with deep flavor and french fried... More

Glad we found this little gem! Def try the tasting menu option. People super friendly but a little harried, you can tell this is a local hot spot!

Their ribs are fantastic, as is their BBQ. I like the Taster's Choice platter which comes with your choice of 3 mini-sandwiches and 2 sides (there are 13 sides to choose from). All of their sides are excellent also. Husband loves the ribs and whole chicken. There are weekly specials and a selection of unique hot sauces that you can... More
