First I'm so surprised that there are so few reviews on Tripadvisor, both Yelp & Google have many more. In my brief time in MD, we ate @ Umi twice. Visiting family again and we have gotten smarter in our ordering of sushi @ Umi....First we like sushi much better than any roll so we ordered the Umi A La Carte Tray which can consist of 30 pieces of sushi, Chef's choice, seven - eight different kinds of fish. And then we added in salmon roe, tuna belly, salmon belly, squid, yellowtail belly, live scallop, sweet shrimp. The Chef's choice included: salmon, tuna, white tuna, yellowtail, mackerel, sea bream(madai), branzino, & snapper. We also ordered the soft-shell crab tempura & vegetables. The soft shell crab was split in two & battered in tempura. It was very good. I found the vegetable tempura to be kind of greasy so I don't know if I would order tempura again. All the sushi was very fresh, delicious & beautifully presented. It was a busy night so we got our sushi on large platters instead of the boats. The portions of fish were very generous and I like that Umi does not put too much wasabi on the sushi so you can really taste the fish. Really enjoyed the squid sushi, first time trying it. My niece's husband tried the live scallop & said it was outstanding. We all enjoyed the yellowtail belly. Our second visit was for lunch on 4th of July - we arrived when they open @ 11:00 AM so I could get on the road to get back to Williamsburg. Again we ordered the Umi A La Carte Tray & supplemented w/ other sushi: salmon roe, tuna belly, salmon belly, Baby Hawaiian Yellowtail belly, sweet shrimp, squid & live scallop. This time for the Chef's choice, we had: tuna, salmon, white tuna, sea bream, branzino, mackerel, yellowtail & as a special treat we got four pieces of salmon belly instead of snapper. Also, the chef added in another order of the tuna belly sushi. The sushi was even fresher than the last time. The tuna belly sushi was from a smaller tuna so it just melted in your mouth. We also tried as an appetizer the crystal shrimp dumplings which are very similar to Chinese dim sum, har gow. It was very good, the wrapper was very soft and translucent; person who made the dough for the dumpling was very skilled. I would have like more shrimp in the filling for my taste but this is not a Cantonese dim sum place. The baby Hawaiian yellowtail belly was outstanding, liked it even better than the yellowtail belly that we tried the other night. My favorite is salmon roe sushi, here @ Umi it is a very fresh & generous portion of salmon roe. Service was excellent, our waiter William was very careful in taking the order and when we had questions about any of the fish or garnishes, he would go & check w/ the sushi chef. And of course, the patio is such a beautiful venue to dine at. This will be the spot I dine at each time I'm in the area.More

Very fresh fish for starters. We had a large sushi boat for a group of people and everyone was happy with the quality of the offerings. The service was also quick, and very efficient. Would return here for sure.

Umi Sushi is our go-to restaurant in Old Ellicott City. The food is delicious and beautifully presented. They have lots of variety on the menu so our whole family loves to go. One of us has a severe fish (but not shellfish) allergy and one...is vegetarian, and we all leave happy. Their patio is hands-down the best outdoor dining spot in Old EC. This is a great spot for celebrations or just everyday. Can’t wait to go back!More

First things first, sushi is really good! Service is really good. The outdoor patio is amazing. Who knew! Such great ambiance. I really recommend spending your sushi dollars here. You won’t be disappointed. Lucky to have them in OEC. Usually the restaurants are subpar and...a disappointment. But the people at UMI did not phone it in, thankfully.More

We had lunch at Umi after a hike nearby back in June. We were excited to be back in Ellicott City, as our last time there was just as things were recovering from the second flood. Sushi seemed like a good option. Service throughout our...visit was excellent. However, the sushi itself was just ok. I can't remember which rolls we had, which says something in itself. We never expect sunomono to be a good value, but the five small pieces of fish were an exceptionally bad value at $10.95. .This was our second time having sushi post-pandemic, and Umi suffered in contrast to the sushi restaurant we visited in downtown Boise back in May.More

I was visiting family on my way back from Long Island to Williamsburg and what a treat to be able to have sushi at this charming location in old Ellicott City. We sat out on the back patio which has a beautiful overlook and view...- it is one of the nicest outdoor patios that I have been to(aside from ones in Greece, Dubrovnik and other picturesque locations). Since it has been a really long time since I had eaten sushi with other sushi lovers, we went all out. Got the UMI Ultra Tray which consists of 20 pieces of nigiri sushi, 24 pieces of sashimi, umi roll, & american dream roll. We also ordered a la carte - salmon roe, octopus, tuna belly(toro), and salmon belly. My niece & her husband had not had those last four & I just love salmon roe. We were not disappointed. We started with the a la carte pieces and they were exceptional. The salmon roe was very fresh and the portion very generous. Both the toro & the salmon belly just melted in your mouth. Octopus was great. In fact all the sushi & sashimi portions were very, very fresh & generous. Sushi rice was perfect. Sometimes some sushi chefs put too much wasabi between the fish & the rice, it was just right. Our server Yan was incredible, we must have asked her several times about the sushi & sashimi that we were unfamiliar with. The tuna, salmon, yellow tail, red snapper, escolar were delicious & beautifully presented. I sampled the two rolls & they were very good but we mostly focused on the sushi & sashimi. Of course we had ordered too much so got a carryout container, my niece's husband was taking the rest for lunch the next day. I have eaten sushi in Asia and across the US, I have to say this was one of the best places that I have ever had sushi. Rolls are OK, generously designed for those who don't eat raw fish so when you have this quality of sushi, a better plan is to order the UMI a la carte tray where you can have 30 pieces of sushi or sashimi and again order some special items a la carte. Please check out my photos. I hope I get invited back to visit so we can have another wonderful dining experience here again.More

This was the second time we visited and it was even better than I remember! We sat outside on the back patio and had a delightful lunch. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The food was brought out in a timely manner. The tastes...were spectacular! We started with the house salad and miso soup, both of which were the best I have had in the United States ( and I have been to many sushi restaurants). We had the garlic chili tofu and fresh spring rolls for starters and they were perfectly prepared and bursting with flavor. The garlic chili was the perfect blend of heat and flavor and the tofu melted in your mouth. The spring roll was light and fresh and the spicy sauce was light but flavorful. We followed the appetizers with honeymoon and crazy salmon rolls. The yellowfin crunch and sriracha in the Honeymoon roll were the right balance of fun and zest (and reminded me of my honeymoon! 😉); the Crazy Salmon mad me crazy for more. We were treated to a slice of desert cake that was what I believe was the offspring of an angel food and creme brûlée cheesecake pairing. It was heavenly! This place rivaled my favorite sushi restaurant in Japan. What a wonderful restaurant to have here in our Maryland backyard! Stop by and you will not be disappointed! Thank you for a wonderful experience! We will be back!More

What a spectacular find!! Everything we ordered was amazing. We thought we had ordered to much, but barely left any leftovers because everything was delicious. My kids ordered Udon noodles with chicken, shrimp fried rice, and Udon noodle soup. My wife and I shared coconut...shrimp and spring rolls as appetizers, and several nigiri’s, a couple sushi rolls, and a Udon noodle soup. We also had several different flavored muchi’s as desserts, and even got a Japanese cheese cake on the house. Cant tell you how much we all loved this place, cant wait to be back..More

I was out to lunch with a business associate, and live nearby. I decided to try Umi Sushi for the first time. What luck! The outdoor patio in the back is wonderful, with a quaint and yet roomy place to sit - covered and beautifully...decorated. The waitstaff were attentive, friendly and prompt. We both had lunch specials - his a bento box, and mine sushi. The lunch specials came with soup and salad, and I ordered fried rice on the side. All of the food was well prepared, fresh and delicious! I will definately go back, and recommend it highly! As an aside, all staff were wearing masks appropriately and I felt very safe with their cleanliness.More

We stopped in for lunch after taking a lovely sunny Sunday stroll through OEC. They just recently opened (per their sign, see photo) and we hadn't had lunch yet so thought we'd try them out. Very busy, lots of booths and tables. My Teriyaki Bento...Box with teriyaki beef ($16.95) was very good, lots of beef! Almost too much beef! It came with a small garden salad with ginger dressing, miso soup, california roll (4 pcs), 2 sumai, 3 pieces of veg. tempura and a big bowl of fried rice (you can order white). My wife enjoyed her Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box ($15.95) and took home half of her chicken! The servers were friendly and kept our drinks topped off. We parked in the nearby public parking lot behind the HowCo Info. Center.More

I was very sorry that Johnny's had to go, actually depressed, but my husband and I fell in love with Umi Sushi !! Great atmosphere, service, sushi, and other great hibachi dishes to select from the menu. The sake and beer selection was the best....What a wonderful surprise!! This is a delightfully romantic and family friendly place to go to! We are going back again and again.More

Excellent sushi and service. Seaweed salad had a little cucumber in it, a nice touch. We had eel, veggie roll, California roll with real crab, Hollywood roll, Baltimore roll (Also with real crab, and Old Bay) and the volcano roll. All very good but the...volcano was our favorite. Followed closely by Hollywood and Baltimore. They also have tuna belly. Located where Johnny was before the floods, they've done a nice job with the decor. It's still got that weird little step down, though. Don't think they can solve that, just watch your step. Didn't try the sake this time. Uesd I'll have to go back.More

Took the family to dinner because of the rave reviews we’d heard from friends. Menu was expansive and decor was great so I had high hopes. Then the food came. The miso soup was watered down and tasteless. The salad was so drenched with dressing...that I couldn’t see the vegetables underneath. The sushi platter looked great but I didn’t taste it... I went to the (cramped, single stall) restroom and found that the bathroom had no soap. Early in the dinner hour too, so it hadn’t run out. Sorry, but I won’t touch sushi in a place without soap.More
