The noise level of this dining room allows you to have a comfortable conversation.I especially enjoy the mussels appetizer and the mixed seafood main course, but all the fish dishes have been excellent. So few restaurants know how to prepare fish, so this is my focus when I dine here. The creme brulee is generous and tasty. Their prix fixe.menu... More

My husband and I held a private party for 27 at Tavira and it was all we hoped for and more. Every single guest raved about how delicious the food was (the crème brulee was talked about for days afterwards) and we especially enjoyed working with the owner on this special event. Excellent staff and service and a lovely atmosphere... More

We've visited both mainland Portugal as well as the Azores & we've been looking forward to going to Tavira for some time now. We went on what turned out to be a quiet Sunday evening and were treated wonderfully by wait staff and the owner/chef himself, Duarte Rebolo! We especially appreciated his taking the time to answer our many questions... More

We have lived locally for many years but have never tried this restaurant, despite being mentioned by local food critics we respect . Wow was it good. We were leaning towards the prix fix but once we heard the specials that is what we went for. Food was delicious and the service superior . An excess of help. True fine... More

The food here is good, especially the fish dishes. I am not in a position to compare it with other Portuguese food, but the dishes tasted quite good. The one negative is the service. My wife ordered the grilled fish special and when the waiter brought it out it was a whole fish. When asked if he would debone it,... More

Tavira is an excellent dining experience. Pleasant friendly service and a Portuguese or semi-Mediterranean cuisine that is hard to beat! Perfect spicing and dressings - food comes out all together - minor comment the wait staff should serve the ladies first (sorry I'm old-fashioned) but since the food is so good we can definitely overlook that and the limited wine... Some classmates got together for a mini-reunion, including 2 women who missed our 50th reunion last year. First we had drinks in the bar while waiting for our 7:30 reservation in a small, private dining room. The waitstaff was very attentive, quick to bring ice water and several baskets of warm bread and dishes of whipped butter. I started with... More

Really interesting menu and specials, but really seem to not provide anything really good. Each item was a disappointment To the overly chewy calamari appetizer to tough and fatty duck entree. They use jarred garlic heavily in their spinach that makes it overpowering in the garlic with a strange taste. The expensive fish specials turned out to be overcooked. Result... More

We were given a gift certificate to Tavira so we made a reservation.Tavira is in the basement of 8401 Connecticut Avenue. It is an intimate setting with wall murals of Portugal. We had the trout and grilled salmon and they were both very good reasonably priced at about $20 each. The vegetables were very tasty. We had creme brulee for dessery.Excellent service. We recommend... Description
Duarte Rebolo was born in Madeira Island, Portugal, a popular European tourist spot. His career in restaurant service began there and so far has spanned about 25 years. He left Madeira to work for Celebrity Cruise Lines. It was here that he worked with world renowned Grand Chef Michel Roux. It was here that he met his wife Linda, and decided to move to the Washington area. While here in Washington, he worked at The Water Gate Hotel with Jean Louis Pallidin until Jean Louis Left. At this point the Pallidin became Aquarelle and the Chef was Robert Weidemaier. Duarte continued to work at The Watergate until his dream of opening his own restaurant came true. Tavira opened in November of 1999. The cuisine is primarily traditional Portuguese, as well as Mediterranean dishes. It has been given favorable reviews from the Washington Post, Washington Diplomat, The Gazette, Bethesda Magazine and Washingtonian Magazine 100 Very Best Restaurants. Duarte's professionalism, attention to detail and hard work will make you Dining experience a deligtful virtual escape to Portugal
