We were in the Chesapeake Bay area on business and, at the end of the trip, got a day to explore. We ended up in Charleston at The Wellwood for lunch. We had a great meal with great service - and an education from the...local gents on how to hammer crabs :-) Atmosphere, view, experience - all good. Go there if you have the opportunity.More

We appreciate The Wellwood! We went there today in the rain as m'wife didn't feel like cooking a late mid-day dinner ... nor an early supper. As we're both retired, I figure she's entitled! She had some of the Oysters Rockefeller with me, the single...Crabcake dinner (broiled, of course), and shared her Hawaiian Delight cake desert with me. I feasted on their Atlantic Salmon with sauteed spinach & two huge shrimp, baked carrots, and underneath some very creamy mashed potatoes. Both entrees, our appetizer and dessert were seasoned to perfection; neither of us bothered with salt or pepper. My wife stuck with water (without ice) and I opted for diet cola with a lemon slice. It was a grand meal, and we met a delightful young couple celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary at the next table. It turned out that our dining 'brownie points' made it a super-special meal for us as well:: my entree was free ... think of that! With taxes and a tip (we included my meal to find the 20%) the damage came to $71.00. Isabelle, our server, was new to us, but a quick learner and eager to please. We look forward to seeing her again. TYVM, The Wellwood!More

We had the Mother's Day buffet. Excellent food and the wait staff was terrific as always. So much food to choose from - and awesome desserts too!

The crabs taste like they been sitting in the murky water.I don’t know kind of chicken that was but it wasn’t fried chicken like my mom and I cook it. I think the rose was the best with the butter taste like honey in the...butter. I just gave away $150.More

The Wellwood is back open after some improvement projects, looking good as ever. We visited this trip to celebrate my birthday and totally enjoyed our dining experience. Outside it started to snow but inside everything was toasty. Dorothy took great care of us as we...started with smoked oysters and a shrimp taco special. For dinner we had a blacken rib eye and a crab cake dinner. The Wellwood chef didn’t lose a beat, everything was a winner Thanks everyoneMore

The Wellwood is a charming, historic restaurant with a mixed menu located near a marina with sand beach. Our family frequents this awesome restaurant at least once per month; and we are never disappointed with the service or the food. After your meal, take some...time to walk up to the flag pole to gaze across the waterway or wander down to the pier. You will love this place!More

On a beautiful October afternoon we went south to find what were probably the best steamed crabs ever. This is a charming eclectic restaurant fit for boaters, day trippers or locals. We had a half dozen large which were terrific. You can't go wrong if...you like to pick steamed crabsMore

this is always a fantastic place with great service with the exception of tonight's experience at the inside bar the bartender was short after sitting at the bar for hours and making friends with other people hearing mutable excuses and having to work around to...the other bartender (chris) who was always there to get what you needed while his partner came up with another lame excuse. people next to us got there dinner and had to ask for silverware the 3 people beside us were asked to wait because she had been there since this morning and needed to regroup while Chris handled the overflow and service bqr. my compliments to Chris or tonight would have been a total disasterMore

This my first time here, but it definitely won’t be my last! It was a day of celebration..my friend’s birthday! She has been talking about crabs all summer and hasn’t been satisfied with her various choices until today! The Wellwood came through! It was a...group effort of trying to taste as many things on the menu as possible! We had the oysters three ways (raw; fried and rockerfella)…crab dip (delicious)…then the main attraction of ‘ALL YOU CAN EAT CRABS’! The fried chicken, hush puppies and French fries come with the all you can eat choice! It was good time…the only thing is the cocktails weren’t the best! I decided to stick with beer! Well done!More

August 17, 2021, I was there with 3 other people. It was the 47th wedding anniversary for husband and me. Daughter and her friend were with us. This was the 3rd time we'd been there. Both other times were fine. This time? Two disasters. 1st:...The baby back ribs I ordered were so fatty and so awful that I sent them back. First bite was nothing but a large glob of fat, covered w/ sauce. Cutting thru the ribs to separate them was impossible. The restaurant had no quick offering to substitute for a meal that had to be sent back, so I had no entry. I specifically asked, "What is the fastest thing that you could get out here, so that I can eat with my dinner companions?" Answer? Nothing. I'd have had to place an order, and it would have arrived, perhaps, 30 minutes after the others had completed. Looking back, they could have offered raw oysters or soup or SOMETHING quick. 2nd: Daughter's pasta had been good. However, she could not complete it all, and she asked for a box to take the rest home. As she spooned the remainder into the take-home box, there in the bottom of the bowl was one large dead fly. Seriously. She left the box and wondered if she'd eaten a dead fly. Yes, those two entries were taken off the bill, but there was no real apology, which left me wondering if such platings were not uncommon. For the prices in that restaurant, those things should not happen. Even after 2 of the 4 entries were removed from the bill, the bill was over $90. For prices like that, one does not expect globs of fat served as meat or dead flies in one's pasta. The other two people said their meals were fine, altho one person had ordered 2 crab cakes and got only one on the plate.More

We have been to the Wellwood several times and have never been disappointed. Not this time either. The atmosphere, service, and food were all spectacular. The only problem there is that they don't have enough handicapped parking. Two of us are mobility challenged and the...hike from the car to the restaurant was an ordeal. The parking there is tight and it looks like they are doing the best they can but for us it's a factor.More

Steve, the bartender at the Wellwood, was a joy to converse with. His drink making skills are top notch. If he turned his hat around and wore it right, I would give 6 stars :)

They also have a "All you can eat seafood" deal. Seemed more reasonable than getting just crabs.

The entire restaurant inside and out is casual. Men with tank tops and flip flops usually sit outside at the picnic tables in the back. Tee shirts, polo shirts, shorts and Docksiders are fine for inside the main restaurant... More
