Every year when I visit friends in Brooklin, Maine, we lunch or dine at El El Frijoles. Last night my wife and I had carnitas tocos, copious amounts of pulled pork topped with generous globs of guacamole served on corn tortillas. At the far end...of the counter are a bucket of bottled hot sauces and the restaurant’s selection of in-house salsas. Our friend had a large lobster burrito. We sat at the one table inside. All the food was excellent. As usual.More

I like to make a point of going to this local eatery several times during the season that I spend in a neighboring town. I went in late this afternoon for an early dinner. It was pouring out so ate inside. I often need several...moments to decide what I want as they have a good number of selections so sat down @ a table. I was behind another gentleman (that the proprietor obviously knew) & when it was my turn the proprietor said, “Well, it’s about time”. I’m pretty sure he meant it in a good natured sense, but, it did seem a bit odd to me. I made my order for tacos and herbal ice tea. The tacos came quickly. I began to eat expecting them to again call my name for the tea. After another few minutes I went to the counter & asked about my tea. It had been forgotten & the cook (the other proprietor?) said “Oh, that wasn’t in my line of thought & when someone comes in alone I think of one item”. What???? I come in alone so I didn’t order a drink? Now to the food. The meat in my tacos was well seasoned and there was cabbage & guacamole on top. The three flour tacos were oddly under the fillings. The flour tacos were fairly tasteless and soggy from what I felt was an excessive amount of liquid given the ingredients. The beans & rice that came with the tacos were good. The tea was good. Overall, I felt the $17.23 bill was high for the quality. I will go back, but, was disappointed today.More

My wife and I ate dinner at El El Frijoles during our recent stay in Stonington. Wow, what a great meal. Her crab quesadilla was superb and the spicy lobster burrito I had was awesome although not really that spicy. This is a no frills...place where you order at the counter then find a place to sit at one of the many picnic tables outside. There is also a screened in area with tables in case the mosquitoes are biting. The night we visited, there was a line out the door waiting to order and we arrived before 5:30. No worries though as the line moved quickly and before we knew it, they were calling my name to pick up our food.More

Great Mexican food. Just top notch. I'm from Arizona and I was surprised to find Mexican food of such high caliber in a small, out of the way town in Maine. I had a special-order burrito con carnitas, baked with lots of cheese on top....It tasted great and it was huge. My wife had fish tacos that she raved about. As we getting up my wife said enthusiastically, "I want to come back here." We will.More

Creative and flavorful Mexican using local ingredients. Everything is homemade, including the tortillas and salsas. Happy, casual place - everyone that works there is friendly and enthusiastic. Well worth any kind of detour to eat here!!!

For years, I'd driven by it numerous times on the way to the Benjamin River boat launch but never with time to stop in. After reading the reviews, my friend and I decided to make a dedicated trip for the sake of having a late...lunch. Our fortune was such that we got to meet the affable owners and have them personally prepare our food. Imagine then our surprise when upon sitting down with our meals, we found them utterly lacking in flavor. Indeed, the only thing we could taste was whatever salsa we dumped on them. I make no claim to be an expert on Mexican food. I have been especially dubious about finding any with spice in Maine (due to the stereotypical Maine palate renowned for its spice-less preferences), So honestly, tasteless Mexican food would not have come as a surprise to me. Except for all the rave reviews! To each his own, as they say. I love that El El Frijoles is local, buys local, and is doing well in its humble abode, and truly, I'm grateful that the owners are having fun doing what they love (they clearly are too). But what can I say when the food didn't taste like much of anything, and even the salsas and sauces weren't all that great either?More

Equally puzzled- Thanks for giving us a try. I don't really know what to say, except, well, read what our other customers are saying. I will add, that I always wish people would take a moment to check-in if they find something lacking or wrong...More

Cute Mex place (rare in rural Maine) near the Eggemoggin Bridge to Dear Isle. Run by California transplants. Nice selection of entrees that change week to week to some extent. Only seating is outdoors or in a big tent, so their business is mainly takeout....However, they have built up a solid local customer base and you may have a wait to put in your order unless you get there early. Good quality casual chow.More
