Looking for somewhere new for dinner while in town and we found an hidden gem! Order at counter, give them your name and cell # and pick up food at kitchen window. Tables are big and spaced out. I had chicken and dumplings (comes with...2 sides) and hubby got "snack" pimento cheese with home made ritz and chicken and waffles. My 2 sides were mashed with gravy and slaw and I opted for a biscuit. EVERYTHING was delicious! I expected the chicken and dumplings to have a thicker broth but it didn't matter as it was so good. They are not afraid to season and use salt. I thought I wanted butter to go with my biscuit but it wasn't necessary. It was that good! Hubby was thrilled with his meal too. Once done, you have a place to put your trash and plates.More

I've gone here twice with my family, and I have nothing bad to say. You order from the bar for food and drinks, and everyone is super friendly and helpful. The biscuits alone are amazing, and I would marry the biscuit maker for the recipe....The chicken and waffles were a hit with my son, as well as the pickle chips. I will continue to come back to try more of the menu. It was also very clean, and while the ceilings are high, I don't feel like the noise/music gets overwhelming. There are a lot of options for seating, and in the warmer weather, they have an outdoor patio area.More

Excellent chicken, beans, slaw and puppies (hush). Typical barbeque arcing in a sectioned platter. But not to worry, lots of paper towels too. But there isn’t any brisket or any other beef on the menu! For a barbecue joint, that’s a real gap. And Wilson...C is so good, that they’d serve a nice beef platter, I’m sure. Maybe!?!?More

Went in to order around 8pm & was told the kitchen was closed as I looked around & saw everyone eating their food. So I asked to simply speak to a manager. So 1 of the many arrogant managers came over & stated their cook...was very tired & he decided to cut him loose. Me just working 9 hours that day & driving over I wasn't too happy. Very understandable right? Not according to theses arrogant managers/ owners. So I simply communicated how disappointed I was that I drove over, was hungry to be told this b/c the cook worked a long shift. So I simply left & came back the next day; this is where is got WOKE. I arrive & as many "google reviews" imply this, I was looked at with disgust & ignored for a good 5 minutes. They were actually waiting for a manager to speak to me, like I was a kid. So another manager said, "was everything ok last night?" I said, "yea why?" He then said exactly what I would expect because we live in this disgusting society now where the customer sucks & is always in the wrong, rather than, "hey man we see you in here all the time, sorry about last night... we noticed you got upset, we'll try & make it up to you." He instead said, "the manager said you raised your voice," like he someone big & bad & losing my business is no big deal. OK! I said, raised my voice, ah no not really, more like disappointed & I expressed that, is there a problem with me doing that?" So this arrogant manager or I wouldn't be surprised the owner wouldn't let it go or let it dawn on him that actually I am so right that you never do this to a customer OVER SIMPLY BEING FRUSTRATED THAT SERVICE WAS CLOSED regardless of the situation. Ok the cook worked a long shift, yea s*** happens, but you handled this with such unprofessionalism! And not only you lost my business, but my girls, my co-workers & who ever I come across. That's why you don't act this way. *** And train you staff not to look so disgusted when they look at certain people * Read your reviews and learn from them! *** AND I challenge the owner to reach out if these were just mangers acting this way just in case you do care!More

Third time here in a year. Very nice eating out on the patio if the weather is right. I enjoy the food, although the menu could be expanded a bit. Believe it or not, people who enjoy BBQ also like vegetables. Cafeteria style - order...at the register and pick it up yourself. You should tip yourself if your service is good. Typical prices for Portland ($8 beers and $20+ entrees). Awesome decor, tasty food, plenty of free parking. Terrific beer selection is a draw for me. Also we made a mistake in our our order of a side dish and the kitchen staff at the pickup counter were very courteous to make it right for us - great customer service. Will be back!More

If you like it spicy, and we do, Wilson's County Barbecue is likely for your tastes. Mid-October in Portland is usually the end of autumn in Maine, with the brisk northwestern winds from Canada making their appearance. Today was no exception, and the thought of...sitting outside on a picnic table eating the last vestiges of a summer's barbecue led us to the Hanover Street establishment. We ordered a rack of ribs along with two sides, fried pickles (really good, generous portion), and beers. The baby-back rib meat literally fell off the bone which we thought would reflect its moist and succulent preparation. We were wrong; although tender, the rib meat was dry, enhanced by a spicy sauce. In fact, their jalapeno spice peppered the meat, the crinkly fries, was included in the fried pickles (and peppers), and the Wilson County Barbecue Palette-Smacking IPA (infused with jalapeno). At the conclusion of the meal, our only remark was that the one-note jalapeno spice was broken by the coleslaw and hush puppies. Our conclusion is that the barbecue was tasty, but the dryness of the ribs left something to be desired.More

We had lunch here. BBQ Sandwich ($15) and the Grilled Chicken Sandwich ($14). My BBQ Sandwich (Pulled Pork) was excellent. Among the best pulled pork sandwiches I've had. You order at the counter, find a place to sit, and they text you when to pick...up your food. 28 beer taps -- 10 oz beers ($5-6) and 20 oz beers ($10-11). Industrial look to the interior. Outside dining. We will return. (If, a long time ago, you were a fan of Uncle Billy's Downeast BBQ, then you'll like the food here -- same high quality and flavor.)More

Just amazing! The food is so good, we ate there 2 days in a row. All the food is made from scratch. I ordered the chicken and dumplings. It was amazing. My husband ordered the chicken. We loved the biscuits and hush puppies. The sweet...butter is the best. The Brunswick stew is a must. My second visit I ordered the shrimp po boy, the shrimp was fantastic!! My only disappointment are the fries. The seasoning was fantastic but they are frozen fries. It's a shame they serve frozen fries with such good quality food.More

These days, you can't even find real wood-cooked whole hog in Wilson County, NC, but here it is in Maine! I eat a lot of bbq all over the US (and Europe) and this is well worth a trip from anywhere in New England ......or beyond. For a full review, see john tanners bbq blog and search "wilson".More

Total shock explains my reaction to finding a good bbq joint in Portland, Maine. We are spending a month in Maine and have really enjoyed Maine's lobsters and oysters, but after a while you need some variety. We were walking around, looking for an open...restaurant on a Monday night in Portland when we stumbled on to Wilson County BBQ. The four of us had ribs, fried chicken, fried okra and buttermilk pie. It was all AMAZING! The plates come with two sides each, which were also AMAZING! They also have many beers on tap. The staff was very friendly and efficient. At first I thought the food was a little bit expensive, but when we were stuffed and still had enough food for another meal to take home with us, I decided it was a priced very fairly. The place is spotless clean and also has a large outdoor seating area. I asked one of the employees how long they had been open and she said about a year and a half. Therefore, they don't have too many reviews yet, but I predict they will before long. I will be a return customer.More

I'm from North Carolina and I can say with authority that Wilson County Barbecue is cooking better eastern Carolina-style whole hog barbecue than most places in eastern North Carolina. The barbecue is 100% wood cooked, which is rare these days, and served fresh off the...pit. Be sure to ask for skin, crisp and succulent. The chicken and ribs are excellent, too, but you can get those at other places, Sides and desserts are first-rate, and they even serve sweet tea -- but they have an excellent beer and wine list, if you insist.More

Service was excellent and friendly. The BBQ was excellent, pork chicken, beans, pimento cheese...app, all worth a try. I'll be back for sure.More
