We were walking around Portland on a Monday morning and the menu from Mami caught our eye. They're closed Sundays and Mondays so we told ourselves we'd come back and check it out. It didn't look like they had a set up for outdoor dining, so we called ahead on a Wednesday to pick up some takeout. We arrived ten minutes after the call and they said the food was almost ready. Their patio also happened to be set up and it was pretty empty (around 2 pm) so we asked if we could dine in instead. Tables are socially distanced, and they sanitize the table and even the chairs before you're seated. Our food came out almost as soon as we sat down. We had:
Pokedon (Maine Salmon rice bowl, cucumbers, seaweed salad, pickled onion, benishoga, citrus sesame soy dressing, spicy mayo, negi, toasted sesame, tobikko, nori) - for $15, I don't think it was really worth it. There also didn't seem to be that much salmon. It's definitely something you could make at home
Gyudon (shaved, marinated, grilled ribeye rice bowl, pickled onions, benishoga, fried egg, negi, toasted sesame) - this was way better than the pokedon and more worth it, in my opinion ($13). The beef was perfectly marinated, not too salty, and it was tender
Chicken Katsu Sando (chicken thigh katsu, toasted house shokupan, lettuce, pickles, spicy mayo, tonkatsu sauce, 7 min egg.) - this was our favorite. It's huge so it's a bit difficult to eat, but totally worth the effort. The chicken is perfectly fried and tender, and the egg was a nice addition to the sando. I would definitely order this again. Judging from this sandwich, I'm guessing their karaage would be good too
The Big Mami, which is a cheeseburger on a squid ink brioche sounded amazing as well, but that would have been way too much food for two people. The three things we ordered was already a bit much but those were the top three things we wanted to try. Guess I'll have to come back for that burger the next time I'm in Portland!

We stopped into Mami's en route to the mountains. We loved every minute of our lunch. Japanese street food is now my thing, thanks to Mami's. Their flavors are spot on and plating is creative. It's a casual little spot to enjoy fresh clean food.

Eat in or take out, Mami offers solid Japanese street food items from small snack to full meals. We got take out to eat at our nearby hotel but both inside and outdoor dining options are available. We had the Japanese fried chicken and Okonimiyaki and both were delicious. Well worth a bisit for something a little out of the mainstream.

Dear lord, this town has a plethora of unique and delicious restaurants, and Mami is one of the best! Tiny little place, but food to die for and cheerful, knowledgeable staff. I had the blistered shisito peppers and an amazing pork belly bao. We had an off-menu special, also with pork belly, and my husband and I couldn't devour it fast enough. My husband also got chicken katsu - we ate every last bite and went back to the hotel with very happy tummies. Absolutely worth making a detour!

While not everything here was perfectly executed, I was still introduced to some Japanese flavors and combinations I hadn't had before, and was very happy. I would probably give out a four star rating, but it seems this place is a bit new, and I definitely want to see it survive. My katsu sandwich was a wonderful combination of flavors I haven't tasted before, but it was very heavy and make the bottom piece of bread soggy and fall apart. The meat on the boyfriend's bowl was excellent. Our appetizers were perfect bites and delicious. I don't understand the paper plates and bowls, but maybe that's temporary. There was also very unexpected music and a vibe I didn't expect, but made for a great overall experience. This was probably the best food I've ever had in Portland.

Not a clue... but good reviews. Japanese street food at the highest level. Rice balls stuffed with octopus and Japanese dried chicken. all what they called small plates😜. A terrific wine , sake and beer list. Wish I had a friend with me. Would have tried more.

Amazing food! We split two appetizers and a rib eye domburi rice bowl. Plus a large unfiltered sake and ice cream cookie sandwich. Entire bill came to $45. And it was all outstanding food.

I love this place. My family loves shushi ; me not at all. So I usually nix Japanese restaurants but this place is different. It has a limited menu but everything offered is unique and delicious. I would get the Chixx Satsu Sando (and get the bread on the side for me) or Okonomiyaki is my favorite. Next time I go I'm getting the Katsudon. My sisters favorite is the Soba noodles.

It was okay. The Karaagi was good, hot, and tasty. The Nikumen was a waste of money. Three small pieces of meat in a large rice ball. Not worth $10. I ordered a beer that was listed was not listed as a pale ale. I don't like pale ales in general but it was pretty good as far as they go, but I still didn't like it. I wish they would have listed it as a pale ale and not just a seasonal. My wife ordered a lemon sake drink. It was good. I think the biggest reason I would not go back is they had the HVAC set to 81. Too warm and humid on a hot day for my tastes.

I got the Gyudon rice bowl (marinated shaved ribeye, etc.) and the Benjamin Bridge Riquette sparkling white, which was a blend of sauvignon blanc, muscat, chardonnay, and ortega with citrus notes. The wine was great, but I think the rice bowl would have been better with more of a sauce or broth. It was very good, though. Nice service and atmosphere, reasonable prices for these times.

If you enjoy good Japanese food served simply than you will want to give this restaurant a try. The food was good and our server was friendly. It’s a very small space and can fill up quickly but if you go at non peak times you will be fine. We enjoyed everything and would dine here again.

The food here is soooooo good. The staff is incredibly nice and accommodating, and even asked us if we had any allergies while ordering. Genuinely this place is my favorite restaurant in Portland. This place is amazing!

We were looking for an Asian place at the old Port of Portland, as my wife is vegan and my daughter is a lover of sushi, rice and noodles. This place, unfortunately, didn't really fit the bill - it's supposedly Japanese but has no sushi and very few recognizable dishes. The helpful waitress pointed out one main (Yakisoba - noodles with vegetables) and two entrees that are vegan (none of which had any protein) and we ordered all three, as well as a non-vegan version of the noodles for my daughter and a dish of Asian pancakes with pork belly for me.
After a relatively long wait, we got our dishes. The Yakisoba - both versions - were overly seasoned, with roasted vegetables that were too much for my daughter, and the sauce was too sweet. The entrees (roasted peppers and a cucumber salad) were average at best. My dish was interesting, though again a bit overbearingly spiced with a mayonnaise based sauce. In general, not good enough for the price.

In the midst of quarantine, what could be better than the ease, the comfort, the service and the OUTRAGEOUS food that is Mami? The spirit of Mami is welcoming, warm, and completely dedicated to comfortable, home-style (and meticulously safe) service and ridiculously delicious food. Treat yourself if you're sheltering at home--they whipped up supper in just 10 minutes, delivered to my car, and provided me with the best dinner since the last time I got to actually sit inside the Mami space. Don't wait til they're open again--place your take-out, give them a huge tip, and bask in the yum that is Mami. And then when you can go out again--sit inside and love the yum.
