We were walking around Portland on a Monday morning and the menu from Mami caught our eye. They're closed Sundays and Mondays so we told ourselves we'd come back and check it out. It didn't look like they had a set up for outdoor dining,...so we called ahead on a Wednesday to pick up some takeout. We arrived ten minutes after the call and they said the food was almost ready. Their patio also happened to be set up and it was pretty empty (around 2 pm) so we asked if we could dine in instead. Tables are socially distanced, and they sanitize the table and even the chairs before you're seated. Our food came out almost as soon as we sat down. We had: Pokedon (Maine Salmon rice bowl, cucumbers, seaweed salad, pickled onion, benishoga, citrus sesame soy dressing, spicy mayo, negi, toasted sesame, tobikko, nori) - for $15, I don't think it was really worth it. There also didn't seem to be that much salmon. It's definitely something you could make at home Gyudon (shaved, marinated, grilled ribeye rice bowl, pickled onions, benishoga, fried egg, negi, toasted sesame) - this was way better than the pokedon and more worth it, in my opinion ($13). The beef was perfectly marinated, not too salty, and it was tender Chicken Katsu Sando (chicken thigh katsu, toasted house shokupan, lettuce, pickles, spicy mayo, tonkatsu sauce, 7 min egg.) - this was our favorite. It's huge so it's a bit difficult to eat, but totally worth the effort. The chicken is perfectly fried and tender, and the egg was a nice addition to the sando. I would definitely order this again. Judging from this sandwich, I'm guessing their karaage would be good too The Big Mami, which is a cheeseburger on a squid ink brioche sounded amazing as well, but that would have been way too much food for two people. The three things we ordered was already a bit much but those were the top three things we wanted to try. Guess I'll have to come back for that burger the next time I'm in Portland!More

I've had Mami a handful of time. Consistently fresh and delicious food for a reasonable price. Highly recommend.

Not a clue... but good reviews. Japanese street food at the highest level. Rice balls stuffed with octopus and Japanese dried chicken. all what they called small plates😜. A terrific wine , sake and beer list. Wish I had a friend with me. Would have...tried more.More

Amazing food! We split two appetizers and a rib eye domburi rice bowl. Plus a large unfiltered sake and ice cream cookie sandwich. Entire bill came to $45. And it was all outstanding food.

In the midst of quarantine, what could be better than the ease, the comfort, the service and the OUTRAGEOUS food that is Mami? The spirit of Mami is welcoming, warm, and completely dedicated to comfortable, home-style (and meticulously safe) service and ridiculously delicious food. Treat...yourself if you're sheltering at home--they whipped up supper in just 10 minutes, delivered to my car, and provided me with the best dinner since the last time I got to actually sit inside the Mami space. Don't wait til they're open again--place your take-out, give them a huge tip, and bask in the yum that is Mami. And then when you can go out again--sit inside and love the yum.More

Since moving away from Portland there are two restaurants that I crave and am therefore obligated to patron when I am in town. Mami is number one on the list, the poke don, okonomiyaki, steamed buns, and rice balls all seem to call to me...when I’m away - I’m never disappointed to pop in or get takeaway!More

We stopped into Mami's en route to the mountains. We loved every minute of our lunch. Japanese street food is now my thing, thanks to Mami's. Their flavors are spot on and plating is creative. It's a casual little spot to enjoy fresh clean food.

I really looked forward to trying this place, but afterwards we agreed with so many Portland options that this restaurant was a one and done. I had the Takoyaki (grilled octopus balls) as a starter and the Okonomiyaki (savory pancake) as my main. The overwhelming...taste was of the Japanese Kewpie mayo, which did nothing for either dish. My wife shared the same feelings on her two dishes. The other thing we did not care for was the loud head banging music from the bar.More

I was looking for a quick and easy lunch when i decided to stop at the location of Mami on Fore St. I remember it as a food truck. I ordered the japanese fried chicken and the rice ball. The food was prepared with care,...presentation looked good but more importantly delicious. I took the lunch to the eastern promenade to enjoy the sunny day. The japanese fried chicken was hot, tender, plentiful - about 5 huge chunks - and had a lightly flavored mayo dip. The coating was crunchy. The rice ball was formed as a triangle and had shredded greens inside and a nice soy sauce. Very crispy on the outside and flavorful. I found i could not stop and save half, as i orginally thought. It was all too good. I will be back for the yakisoba noodles.More

First time visit. I'm not that familiar with Japanese street food, but I tried the oyakodon rice bowl and found it to be very good. It was pricy at $15, but not outlandishly so, since Mami's in the Old Port district. Friendly service, cozy atmosphere.
