I am so very glad that my fiance and myself happened to find this lovely restaurant. In walking downtown, we just saw the sign, and decided to take a chance, we were there early, once the door opened and we were escorted in, I was...hooked. The vibe is just so super great. every detail, spot on. It's open and airy, a little loud, but hey, that's all part of it. Now onto drinks, we tried locals brews, they were excellent. Now onto raw fish, we chose oysters, all 3 varieties they have, were excellent, however, my fav was the Blackstone. Now onto appetizer, we had the crab fritters and the grilled octopus. Which in my opinion was EXCELLENT! Then we shared the Fluke, which we have never had before, that was excellent as well, a very mild fish, highly recommend. It's always great trying something new. We enjoyed ourselves here, were very comfortable, staff was warm and welcoming. Upon speaking with them, they mostly have been working there several years and do not see themselves working anywhere else. Which is a huge GOLD star. We spoke with the GM of the restaurant, he was nice and polite. We made sure to let him know we had a most memorable time and would be back again. It's a tad pricey, but WORTH it. Please, do not let money deter you from trying this special gem.More

Our first visit to Scales did not disappoint. We came with friends who had been before. Enjoy seafood? You'll want to spend some time here. The first thing that hits you when you come in is the kitchen, right there in front of you. Busy...bees working their magic to make your evening the best it can be. The staff is kind and very professional. Until you receive your food, this place is already a 10. Will it get better? Oh yes it will. When your meal comes you know you're elsewhere. It is impeccable. I enjoyed a crustacean-free seafood stew. Yes, you read that correctly. All the other meals were also delicious. We can't wait to go back.More

The seafood here is excellent. Had the fluke special and halibut - both were just excellent. Nice wine selection and ambience is fun and has a good buzz. Will definitely return. Reservations are must have.

Hair in chowder, scallops over-cooked, martini watered down like a college sports venue, but great ambience and service.

Food was exceptional....as was the service. Only down side was the noise. Very hard to hear even across the table.

Certainly. Yes. Thank You. You are welcome. Words you hear from Scales staff as they go about their business. The bar is a pleasure with action, drama and delicious bar food. Octopus and Crab Fritters were served warmly and smartly. Offers of so many more...things that tempt but that’s for another time. And there will be another timeMore

We went to Portland on a last-minute trip and failed to make it to Fore Street which required a two-month advance reservation. Luckily, its sister restaurant Scales had a cancellation and looking back, we probably would have preferred this choice anyway. First, the location was...better, on a waterfront overlooking the harbor framed by wall–to-ceiling windows. Second, the atmosphere was still upscale but laid-back and less formal. We had no issues with the food but I am taking a star off because service was not quite up to expectations. Prices are NYC and Boston levels.More

If you’re in Portland Maine make sure you make reservations to experience not only a culinary delight but the incredible service, attentiveness and professionalism of the experienced waitstaff!! The menu is all hand prepared, so plan on ordering your starter, appetizers and main dish all...at one time. The staff will present each course in the most timely manner. We travel the world and love the cuisines wherever we go, Scales is a restaurant that has set the bar high!! The Oysters are always amazing, the crab and corn chowder perfectly balanced and the Crudo out of this world!!! Don’t forget to order the Anadama bread with butter and molasses, it’s definitely worth every delightful calorie!!!! If you have room for more try the local mussels…… it’s definitely a culinary extravaganza!!! For those of you who love wines, you will be delighted with the extensive wine list. My favorite is the French Vouvray, buttery and delicious!More

The food was good, but overpriced. The service was not up to par for the prices. We were a family of of four, but had appetizers and entrees all served at differently times. They just can’t get it together, and stop using the help excuse...due to COVID.More

1... So disappointing! Friends in town from Denver and Atlanta. My go to restaurant Fore St didn't have any seating at a time that worked, but my alternate Scales did. Seated promptly. 10 minutes before our server took drink orders. 1 individual ordered oysters while...waiting for drinks. Oysters and drinks arrived, someone wanted to order additional appetizers but server said she would only take appetizer orders once we also had entrees finalized..but somehow she took oyster order... Food arrived, orders not fulfilled as placed. 1 person had blue fin tuna. Scallops were small and not well seared.. salmon was very thin, broiled cod was extremely salty, fish sandwich was not as good as our last visit...Server never checked back in on the group after food delivered to table. We had to flag her down to bring missing items. We had completed our meals for approximately 20 minutes before she asked if any one wanted dessert. At that point, we had waited long enough. The wait staff seemed plenty, but didn't seem to care for our business...this was an experienced server. She was not personable....More

This was our 2nd visit to Scales in Portland and we couldn't have enjoyed it more. As our 1st dinner of this trip it is the meal that we judged all meals by. We ate at the bar and loved it. We had a great...time talking with the patrons near us and the staff. Enjoyed watching the oyster shocking. We had oysters, clams, mussels, and octopus. All were fresh and tasty. Highly recommend the octopus and local oysters. The service was prompt, professional, courteous and friendly. You can't go wrong with Scales.More

Excellent from start to finish. The Ramp Rolls were decadent, smothered in a garlic butter that made for yummy dipping. I ordered the seared scallops which were beautifully presented & delicious on a bed of creamed corn with thick chucks of smoked bacon. My husband...had the halibut which he termed “the best piece of fish I have had in years”. We supplemented with broccolini which was very good although a little spicy. Service was an absolute 10 out of 10. Prices are on the high side but everything was beyond good so it was worth it. This was the first restaurant we ate at during our Portland trip & it set the bar extremely high for all other restaurants.More

Although there are non-seafood choices on the menu, this is a seafood mecca. We started with the crab/corn chowder. Wonderfully tasty dish with a slight spicy flavor. My wife ordered the halibut ceviche* roasted pineapple hot sauce, jalapeño & corn crisp. Not your standard ceviche,...as the halibut was within a ring of the hot (actually relatively mild) sauce and not in citrus. Tasty, but the pineapple flavor was quite subtle. The entrees really shined. I ordered the pan roasted halibut brown butter, hazelnuts, Maine fingerling potatoes & lemon. It was literally the best halibut I've ever eaten - a memorable dish. My wife had the seared scallops, sweet corn, roasted peppers, applewood bacon & corn cream. Another marvelous dish, and I'm not sure where the ingredients were sourced, but the scallops and corn were soooo tasty. Portland is an exceptional dining destination, and Scales is one of the best fine dining seafood choices. The menu has not changed significantly over the past few years, but with such superb prep it hasn't needed revision. I'd order the halibut the next 5 visits. :) Only downside is that the noise level is fairly loud and the tables place closely together.More
