During COVID, getting out of the house is a treat. Getting out of the house and actually going to a restaurant is something all-too-rare for many of us. I would include me and my better half in that category. Not only are fewer people going...out to eat this winter: the places remaining open seems to be shrinking weekly (if not, daily). If you consider coastal Maine, out-to-eat pickings have gotten really slim. I worry about whether many will make it back in 2021. On a trip down the coast to Damariscotta and then, over to Boothbay Harbor (for the lights at Coastal Botanical Gardens), my wife and I wanted a place to stop mid-afternoon after driving up from York County. Fortunately, Newcastle Publick House was open and as good as we remember from a previous visit. First, for the Covidians who fear everything about this time we’re living in: staff and management at the restaurant are following all CDC guidelines and more. It’s as safe as eating out can be. If you don’t feel safe eating out, don’t. Some of us still like getting out of the bunker and living. My wife and are both vegetarians, with a pescatarian penchant. Newcastle Publick House had plenty of options for those of us who like an occasional fish or seafood option. My Damariscotta River Oyster Po Boy was a treat. The oysters were seasoned and fried to perfection. They’re from Mook’s, so they’re local. I mean, if you are in area and you can’t find local oysters, you’re not trying too hard. The brioche was grilled just the way I like it: buttered and seared in the pan, but not burnt. The house chips were crispy and a nice alternative to the ubiquitous fries that usually serve as a fried seafood side all over Maine. The pepper relish and smoked tomato mayo enhanced the fried oysters and didn’t overpower their taste. My wife opted for the Haddock Rachel, a seafood take on the classic Turkey Rachel (also on the menu). My wife’s fish was flaky and the pickled cabbage was terrific, as we the beet slaw topping. She also chose the house chips, too. We both enjoyed our Tempura Cauliflower we started with as an appetizer. And of course, did you think we wouldn’t have half a dozen oysters on the half shell? I mean, you can see the Damariscotta River out the window, so they don’t get much fresher than here! Newcastle Publick House carries a wide assortment of Maine’s abundant locally-made beers. I really enjoyed the Maine Whoopie Pie stout from SoME Brewing in York. Living in Maine’s southernmost county, I hadn’t tried their beers before. I will be on the lookout now that I sampled it in Newcastle. My wife isn’t a beer drinker, but there were plenty wines to choose from. Oh, and the restaurant has a full bar, too. If like me, you haven't been out much and happen to be down the coast and looking for a place to get a bite, then I’d highly recommend the food and conscientious staff at Newcastle Publick House.More

I've been there a couple of dozen times over the years with the family and the food is usually excellant. I usually get a bacon burger because it's always good. The fish and chips, Ruben and Haddock Rachel are also great choices. If we get...apps, we usually get the tempura cauliflower or the pulled pork nachos, which are delicious. The Angry Al's baked oysters are great if you don't care for raw oysters. The homemade deserts change every week and are always good. I've had the brownie sundae many times and it's wonderful, if a little roo large. My wife always raves about the cheesecake, whe There are a few options for those with restricted diets (the cauliflower app is vegan) such as the impossible burger and the gluton free dough pizzas which I've heard nothing but good things about. There is even a gluton free dessert, a flourlessn available. chocolate torte. The waitresses are friendly and have no problem answering questions. There's a huge selection of draft beer/hard liquer for those who want drinks with dinner. The drafts change weekly but there are over 15 choices so even selective drinkers should find something they enjoy. If you're on a tight budget beware, it's a bit pricey for dinner. The prices start at $12 for most apps and can hit $25 to $30 for the entree alone. But as a treat or special occasion it's worth splurging on. Another thing, there is weekly music upstairs (in the Oysterhead Lounge) and downstairs in the bar area so the atmosphere can be noisy even in the dining room. Overall, one of the top restaurants in surrounding area. Highly recommended.More

We ate here on the evening of 11/11 and the weather was so mild that we were able to eat outside. Dinner was very good and the staff was very friendly and accommodating.

Newcastle is such a great space. The location has a good vibe, the service was friendly, patient and polite. The people who reviewed "you might have to wait" boggle my mind. Its a great location and surprise, its good food and good beer and a...great spot, it gets busy. They handle it well, the beer selection is great, the flights in particular are well priced. The poutine was outstanding as well. Cannot go wrong here. It is a friendly, up beat place which is why sometimes its busy, not sure how that warrants it being there fault. If you are hungry and in a hurry go get fast food. Quality food and drinks, good times and a fun atmosphere here. Keep it up everyone! ---- Side note - they have also done a great job making it work with COVID restrictions. It isn't easy for anyone this year, but they are making it work.More

Our family of six (with 2 hungry kids) chose this restaurant for the menu. However, we barely had a chance to taste it. We were quickly seated with the 8 other people we saw. That's the last quick thing that happened. Once our order was...FINALLY taken, it took FOREVER for one appetizer and drinks to arrive. More eons passed before the rest of the food arrived. In all, we spent at least an hour and a half there. That was only because we were starving so ate fast once the food arrived. The majority of the time was spent waiting. NO ONE apologized!!! DON'T GO if you're hungry or in a hurry!More

We enjoyed our meal. Service was terrible. Our food was served to us without and silverware or napkins. We did wait a while for our food. I had to ask for it when I saw the host putting it together.

the bar area is pretty, clean, and following all covid protocols! the tempura cauliflower is incredible and i’m so happy we will ordered it! we thought the sauces were a little blah, but maybe that was just us! the crab cakes were good and we...liked the flavor, but i like mine a little crispier vs the super soft kind, and even though i think they’re overpriced for what you receive, they tasted good! we were a little disappointed in the nachos because there wasn’t really any cheese on top so we couldn’t keep our veggies on, but then we found it all in the bottom of the bowl, so it may have just been an accident. overall we left happy!More

Went out for Valentine’s Day dinner. What an amazing meal my husband and I had. We had the Rack of Lamb and Seafood bake.....hats off to the chef the flavor was out of this world and cooked to perfection.. So happy we decided to go...out to dinner last night. You also need save room for dessert ....I was told they are made by some of the staff. Cheesecake and Mocha pie perfect way to end a wonderful dinner. We will be back!More

Three of us came for lunch on a recent Monday. Good Bloody Marys! We ate in the bar and all had a wonderful lunch. I ordered the Buff and Bleu Burger ($17.00) which was quite delicious (albeit on the pricey side), although I could only...eat half of it, it was so massive! It had buffalo sauce, onion rings, gorgonzola sprinkles, tomato, red onion and lettuce and was served with fries and a pickle. Our server/bartender was not very attentive and was MIA quite often, but we were not in a hurry. I'd go back!More
