So convenient by the hotel but the food was wonderful. Creative, tasty, varied. Super good specialty burger with blueberries.

We ate here after exploring Jasper beach and it was a great end to a great trip Downeast. We had appetizers and a great meal while sitting on the deck overlooking the tidal river. We happened to see a seal come up a few time...during our meal. We were stuffed from our meal, but the deserts looked very inviting.More

Nothing fancy about the food, just classics really well done. We waited about 15-20 minutes and were offered a high-top table for two in the bar area. We each had a Maine microbrew on tap. For dinner we had very fairly priced fish and chips...and fried clams. Both were cooked just right and delicious. The young woman tending bar managed to serve 3 tables, bar customers eating dinner and still handle drinks for the rest of the restaurant. Even with that on her plate the service was friendly and efficient. The next night we came back for their blueberry pie a la mode and chocolate cream pie for a take-out dessert. Ample portions and totally satisfying.More

Sophie is the best and has been at Helen's since high school. She is all the wonderful things you mention and a valuable asset to the Helen's family. I will share this glowing review with her.

On our honeymoon, we ate at Helen's Restaurant and had a wonderful, memorable HUGE slice of "The Best Strawberry Pie". It has always been mentioned in family story and last month just got there in time at closing for a take-out. The Talbot House Inn...gave us china plate and real forks and offered tea or coffee as we dug into the pastry, big berry filling and mountain of not-too-sweet whipped cream. A perfect memory recreated for my bride!More

We were staying at the Machias River Inn (recommended) which shares a parking lot with Helen’s Restaurant so we walked over for dinner. The place has a casual vibe, somewhere between a diner and white-tablecloth, and has a view of the Machias River. We waited...just a few minutes for a table. Our waitress was very busy rushing around but friendly and efficient, making sure all her guests were well taken care of. The food was excellent: salmon with maple blueberry glaze, sauteed scallops, large slice of warm blueberry pie a la mode. Our friend who didn’t want seafood and ordered Shepherd’s Pie enjoyed it. The bill for my husband and me was $85 including tip. You can tell these folks really care about providing a quality dining experience.More

Very happy that we found this spot while driving. We were going to stop at Subway, but saw Helen’s and we like local restaurants. They have several specials with a variety of seafood and comfort food. I tried the Shepherds Pie. It was the closest...I’ve had to my grandmother’s homemade. The blueberry pie is delicious!! We ordered ours warm with ice cream. Staff were friendly and we were seated without a wait. The view from the back room and outdoor seating is beautiful!!More

My husband was stationed in Machias in the 1980's. For the last 20 years, I have been hearing about Helen's - the food, the view, the eagles on the river. We finally made it to Maine and he was excited to take me there. Although...the original restaurant is gone, the new one definitely lived up to the 20 year hype. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming, the waitstaff were very friendly and caught him up on area news for the last 35 years (LOL), the view was awesome. We had the salmon with blueberry glaze (excellent) and chicken parm hoagie (good). We were surprised at how much more affordable the lobster dinners and rolls were compared to Bar Harbor. The only small issue we had was that we ordered margaritas thinking that we were getting the $5 house drink and were charged $11 for each drink - we were served the upgraded drinks without ordering them. It was hands down the best meal that we had during our Maine visit. Thanks for the memories!More

We went for lunch and were very pleased, not too crowded, got seated right away, ordered the onion rings. They were awesome! Some of the very best we've ever had. Then my wife asked if she could get the haddock sandwich not fried, so they...said sure, we'll broil it. Perfectly cooked, a generous piece, delicious sandwich. And I had the haddock chowder which was absolutely perfect on its own, then, milky full of fish, but I added lobster to it. Wonderful! We will be back!More

This restaurant was my favorite on my week long trip to ME. The staff was friendly and service quick. They have a big indoor dinning area and a few tables outside looking at a beautiful River. Most importantly the food was excellent and reasonably priced....Four of us ate here and everyone enjoyed the appetizers, entrees and desserts. I had breaded fiddleheads for an appetizer (loved it). I would have preferred it not be breaded. Salmon portion was large and it was perfectly cooked. The desserts were excellent as well. We really enjoyed the food and the setting.More

Helen's is a mainstay in Downeast Maine. It was rebuilt after a tragic fire, and has always laid claim to the best blueberry pie in the state, and we have a LOT of blueberry pies up here. We stopped for lunch, were seated promptly, and...in a short time, placed our order. We both had chowder, her a cup, me a bowl. She ordered onion rings, I went with the "Meatloaf Grilled Cheese w/marinara dipping sauce". Chowders were delivered, and I was about 1/3 the way through my bowl, when here comes the rest of our order. This is a bit of a pet peeve for both of us. When the waitperson brings more food out before you've finished the appetizers, it's just going to sit there and get cold, while cluttering up the table. In addition, my chowder had some VERY hot pieces of potato (Yay!) and other pieces that were still cold. So clearly had not spent enough time in the microwave. I put that aside and started eating my meatloaf grilled cheese sandwich...same issue. Some of the sliced meatloaf in the sandwich was cold. Upside is that the chowder was excellent. It's not "tourist" chowder which is thickened to a poste consistency, and was made with deliciously fresh haddock. The onion rings were also a delight...cooked perfectly in a light and flakey batter. Mrs. declared she'd make the trip back (2hr drive) just for the chowder and rings. And of course, she left with a piece of pie to go.More

Ate here 4 times in a week and enjoyed very good service and a lovely river view. They're always busy but in mid-Oct we had very short wait times. Uneven re food... pro: best fish chowder we've ever had! Loved the very unusual blueberry burger....Terrific onion rings, thin with a crunchy light coating. We found the crab cakes too thick-crusted to our taste, shrimp similar so the flavor was compromised, sweet potato fries and beets seemed out of a package & uninteresting. Tip: they're closed Sun/Mon & may run out of pie earlier on Sat than other nights. Also if there's a particular type of pie you want, you can ask them to hold it for you as you walk by the case on your way in. :)More

The food was hit or miss for me except the pie. It was 5 stars! We ate two meals there and the first meal I had their crab cakes, mashed potato’s and cole slaw. The crab cakes were bland and cold in the middle, should...have sent them back. The slaw was good, mashed potatoes were average. Chocolate cream pie was rich and delicious . Second meal I got the pot roast, mashed potatoes and broccoli. I sent it back because it wasn’t hot. The roast was tender but everything needed salt. The blueberry pie ala mode was delicious . They were super busy both times, short handed so service was not the best but becoming the norm. They are closed Sundays.More
