Wow were they busy the day we went. Line out the door, but they are very efficient and had us seated in minutes. Absolutely fantastic food, classic American Diner fair. The staff were extremely friendly and fast.
After a long drive, we were hungry and this place had good reviews. There was a line out the door and it turns out they don’t take reservations, do any call-ahead seating or have a list to add your name to. You just get in...line and wait…and wait…and wait. We almost left but weren’t sure we’d find any place else that had a shorter wait so we stayed. (If we’d been home we’d never wait this long for a meal but since we’re unfamiliar with the area, we weren’t sure we had any better options nearby.) it was between 45-60 minutes before we got a table. Our waitress was new to Helen’s but friendly and perky. At our table we ended up with crab chowder, blueberry wine, a Cobb Salad with chicken, a side salad and a piece of blueberry pie. The most stand out item was the crab chowder. It was literally packed with crab. The person that had it thought it was exceptional. The Cobb Salad also got high marks. It was very large, fresh and the chicken was tender. The blueberry pie was good; not great but good. Lots of blueberries, not overly sweet and a little more runny than we expected. I thought they should have ordered it with vanilla ice cream but since I didn’t eat it, I kept that suggestion to myself. The sweetness of the ice cream would have probably offset some of the tartness of the blueberries. The blueberry wine was unique but not something a wine lover would necessarily order more than once to try it. Our wine drinkers compared it to Boone’s Farm; enough said. Overall we were pleased with the meal and the wait I think illustrates the popularity of the restaurant. The variety of the menu (see pictures included) should provide something for everyone; though note that sandwiches and wraps aren’t served after 5pm.More
We stopped for a later lunch. I had the Seafood Platter, which had more fried food than a person should eat. My wife had the Chicken Caesar Wrap which she found a bit dry, although still very good. Our server was friendly and kept up...with everything going on. Really enjoyed it.More
Wonderful friendly service just added to the meal we all enjoyed. When we first arrived we wondered how long it would take to get a table as there were so many cars there but we were seated immediately. Highly recommend
We went here for food after going on the Downeast Scenic Railroad. Line was long but wait was not, Got our family of 10 in and out quickly without feeling rushed. High quality meals at an affordable price. All of this while dealing with short...help scituations of August 2021 during the permanent pandemic! Great job guys and galsMore
If my husband and I could give 6 stars, we would! Plenty of parking, no stairs (for those who have difficulty with stairs), and though it was busy, we were seated very quickly. In addition, our server, Reba, was quick to our table, answer questions,...and quick with our drinks and food. She was attentive and provided exceptional service--a true asset to this restaurant! If we had a business, we would want to steal her to work for us! We cannot say enough about the quality and the amount of food and at very reasonable prices! Hands down, the slow roasted turkey dinner was better than I ever had at a Thanksgiving meal! The vegetables--cooked wonderfully and tasted so good! And we never had blueberry lemonade before--what a treat! The fresh baked bread with butter was delicious. We ate here twice and ordered two meals to go for our lunches and dinners as we were travelling the next day. And we though we were full, we could not resist taking pies to go--such a difficult choice from their huge, home made, award winning pies. Our only regret was that we did not find this restaurant sooner! When you are in the area, you do not need to look for anywhere else to eat. Come to Helen's!More
Now the chowder is very good and the burgers are top quality. However the lobster dishes are the best around. My wife had the cobb salad with lobster and it was truly outstanding. Our family had other dishes and it is true that they make...eveything from scratch. In a tourist area you do not find that much anymore. The desserts are truly a dessert lovers dream. Of course the blueberry pie is a Maine staple and with ice cream even better. We took home a whole pie which everyone loved. I can now say that this is a true Gem and if you are in the area go up the hill to eat. Service is great and lots of parking.More
The service was very slow. I ordered sirloin tips and my husband ordered prime rib. He said it was the worst prime rib he ever had. It was dry and tasteless. He ended up putting ketchup on it to be able to eat it. He...would have used steak sauce but our waitress never came back to see if we needed anything. My sirloin tips were also tasteless and I ended up eating only two pieces of it. At the register we told the lady that our food was not good when she asked how everything was and she said “Oh, I’m sorry. That will be $61.” I don’t recommend this place.More
We were looking up a place to eat prior to the lumber jack show. We were staying on MDI but figured we would get dinner in Ellsworth. We read reviews and looked menu, The selection looked good and seemed like a good local food establishment....We did not have to wait long for a table. Seems like there is a lot of local clientele there. Place reminds of a Bob Evan's or Perkins. The service was good but overall the food was average. It was not bad but just average.More
Service was prompt and courteous. We were seated immediately. Staff was all friendly. Dessert (Graham cracker pie and toll house pie) was very good.
The seafood chowder, unfortunately, was very bland and expensive for what it was. The lobster chunks were good but it was...very expensive. Overall, an average meal (dessert was great!) for nearly seventy bucks.More

Well, you are right. I have not eaten these before but wanted to try one during my trip to Maine. The roll I got was a regular, cheap hot dog bun, nothing special and no grilled top cut roll. Based on this experience, I don't plan to eat them again either - definitely not worth the $13-15 you usually pay for them, in my opinion...
