We sat in our reserved table, were given water, and almost immediately asked by the terse waitress what we wanted for dinner. We weren’t ready as we had just been seated. Without assistance with the comprehensive Greek wine list, we chose two glasses and were...lucky we liked them, though the red was a little drier than we liked. Along with our wine, we ordered bread with the yummy bread and the fava, (decent, not special), and the skorthalia (potato, garlic, vinegar and oil which was terrific and just kept growing on you!). We were never offered another glass of wine, but our water carafe was kept full. The limited entrees and specials offered a unique list of proteins, none of which I eat. I was trying to decide on the vegetarian pasta or two small plates, and the waitress indicated the special my companion was getting was served on the same pasta dish so I could try his and have two small plates. The baked feta in sesame, drizzled in honey was very tasty. The filo pie with leeks done beautifully. The entree special, braised rabbit with hen of the woods mushroom and the above- mentioned pasta was a huge disappointed. The sections of rabbit were overcooked and very dry, the mushrooms blackened and stringy, and the pasta, described as homemade pasta with roasted squash, mint and yogurt was a disproportionate amount (to the rabbit) of what seemed like wide egg noodles with no squash or mint to be tasted or found. The dish wasn’t eaten, and the waitress volunteered to remove it from our bill, which was very gracious. Because some of our food was tasty, and my companion still hungry, we opted to share two desserts and Greek coffee. The coffee was interesting and good. The desserts a big disappointment . Greek donuts with honey and walnut were various sized balls of yeast dough deep-fried, (think dough-boy) and drizzled with walnuts cinnamon and honey. Because they varied in size, the largest were uncooked In The middle -raw dough. The Politiko- described as a syrup soaked semolina cake topped with Greek coffee custard was very strange. The coffee custard on top covered with a thick layer of cinnamon was pleasant. The cake was a compressed and hard-packed piece of cake that was inconsistently mixed - several hard chunks in the cake were almost as hard as a jawbreaker. Since then I have researched what this cake should be and it is described as a light fluffy sponge with syrup soaked into it. It was a step out to try different cuisine, and I cant believe this represents the country well.More

We dined in this delightful eight table "taverna" last evening and were completely impressed with the food and the service. The little tables were set simply with linen napkins and mismatched china. There is a small bar and an open view into the chefs kitchen,...tin ceilings, and little bay windows looking out onto a more blue collar view of Brunswick's downtown eateries. An expansive and descriptive wine list featuring Greek wines, many of them organic, biodynamic offered a broad range of affordable options ( $6 a glass?) red, white and rose's, plus Greek soda options small batch local beers, even NA. They offer cases and half cases of wine with special discounts to take home. We enjoyed a dense peasant bread on a carved wooden plate of aromatic peppers pureed with a rich feta, a charred octopus rich with olive oil, oregano and smoke for starters paired with an earthy rose and a crisp brew from Vermont. For our main courses, we had to try the tender local veal was served on a bed of a beautiful melting pile of braised leeks and mashed potatoes and the Moussaka which was phenomenal. Imagine a plate sized, sky high dish of rich mashed potato charred perfectly at the edges over an indescribable mixture of ground beef lightly seasoned with cinnamon and tomato and a tender slice of eggplant sandwiched in the middle. We were tempted to go all out and order the tender lamb as well, but realized that would be just greed. We need to go back and save room for one of the deserts . Like so much of the great Maine restaurants now ,there is an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, but what is really impressive is the total commitment to sharing all that is Greece, a lovely "culture through food experience". The server could not be more professional, knowledgable, helpful or kind.More

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner here. The service was relaxed, just how we like it. Our server Kate was friendly and informative, steering us to a nice bottle of Greek wine from their extensive cellar. The apps and main dishes were all...delicious. Unfortunately, we were too full to try desert. We will be back.More

It pains me to leave a bad review for, what was, one of my favorite restaurants. But I can only tolerate and excuse poor, rude service for so long. I have been a regular customer at Khione since it opened in 2015. The food was...excellent and the single wait staff always friendly and welcoming. But that person has since been replaced (about 2 years ago) with someone who is far better suited to working in a dive bar. She was rude from the minute we walked in the door and her poor manners continued throughout the meal. I overlooked this as perhaps a one-off, but her discourteousness continued on subsequent visits. I continued to support the restaurant during Covid, ordering take-out, despite having to tolerate this impudence over the phone. I am sad to say that my most recent visit to Khione will be my last. Over the past 3 weeks, I have observed this bad behavior escalate and it would appear the owner has no interest in providing quality service to long-time customers. This waitperson refused to seat people, despite a nearly empty restaurant, and refused take-out orders, claiming they do not do take-out after 5pm. Yet, I have always ordered after 5pm and there’s no indication on the website of this new “rule”. I can understand these decisions given a scarcity of staff but cannot tolerate the rudeness with which they’re delivered – as if, “how could I be so stupid to think they can do take-out after 5. They are too busy”. There were only 2 tables seated at the time. I don’t expect any special treatment for my patronage, but I do expect to be treated with decency and some modicum of friendliness when dining out. This restaurant is obviously not interested in your business and will certainly not get mine anymore.More

This is in a small, quiet setting just off Maine Street. The menu is somewhat limited but we have always enjoyed our meals here. Great selection of Greek wines, some of which are really excellent (speaking as a wine lover with many decades of experience)....It's nice to find authentic Greek dishes here you won't find elsewhere and certainly not the kind of fare from most other restaurants. Love their desserts.More

Our first visit since Khione reopened during the Coronavirus, we found it as welcoming as ever, though with fewer tables for sure. We shared a taramosalata, as usual, to start. My middle course of feta with pistachios was fabulous, and my companion was equally pleased...with her dish. We followed those up with venison and figs on my part, stuffed cabbage on my companion’s; hers in particular was out of this world. My only regret is that for the present they have discontinued their offerings of spirits. We did find a nice wine, however.More

We’re always so pleased when we return to Khione. A simple setting, for sure, but when you arrive you are surrounded by warm and such good food! Last night it was pickled smelt and fennel fritters as starters, followed sauted scallops for us. Our companions...went for a filo pie and skate wing. Couldn’t have been better. Wine choices are always good there. Greek wines remain a bit of a mystery to us, but there is excellent advice to guide you. And a little sip of metaxa ends the meal nicely. Service, as usual, was knowledgeable and excellent.More

This Taverna is SO authentic Greek! The moussaka, with the touch of cinnamon, was like being back in Greece. The starters with fresh, home baked bread, are a treat for the pallet. Loved the goat with chick peas in a savory broth. We were impressed...with the selection of Greek wines, too! Everything is just a just perfect for a long, lingering dining experience! Wish we were local, so we could dine here often!More

We stopped in for an early dinner on a Saturday evening. We started with Tzatziki and grilled octopus and enjoyed a quick lesson in Greek wine from the hostess. We dined on the specials posted on their wall. The braised rabbit with sour cherries and...the grilled pork chop with hen of the woods mushrooms and coriander potatoes were both wonderfully prepared and very tasty. We enjoyed our meal leisurely and ended the night with A lovely Rose’ and baklava. We will be back.More

We have loved this place and the predecessor to it as well. Mark is talented and his food consistently combines local meats, seafood and produce with a Greek and Mediterranean flare. We love to order a few or each course and share. You may have...to explore beyond your comfort zone, but you taste buds will thank you! This mother and son do it thoughtfully and lovingly.More

We picked Khione largely because we've visited Greece many times and needed a "fix" of authentic cuisine. We were not let down, starting with the best Greek wine menu we've ever seen, broken down by Greece's many excellent wine regions. We chose a marvelous white...wine from Serres (northern Greece's Macedonia region), authentic and savory taramosalata, followed by the whole sea bass and katsikaki (wonderful goat dish). Desserts did not disappoint, service was attentive starting with asking how much time we had (a musical at the Maine State Music Theater followed), and then just the right amount of checking on how we were doing. Nice decor, lots of parking. We are already planning a return and longer stay to try more starters and salads.More
